00:20 aw110f Hi, I'm using gitfs, is it normal to have to restart the salt-master service whenever I make an edit my SLS git repo (eg: adding new managed files, editing .sls file etc...) ?
00:21 aw110f I'm on version 2014.1.0-1

00:29 ahammond the git.latest state appears to do a git pull... I would have expected a fetch, reset --hard. Is there some way to cause it to behave that way?

00:30 aw110f I run: salt --nodegroup 'test_app_group' state.sls test_app
00:31 aw110f should i compound git.latest as an argument ?
00:33 aw110f http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.git.html --> does the example implies to modify /etc/salt/master config file?
00:34 aw110f …or the .sls file

01:13 jeffg_ hi all... I am evalutating salt vs puppet and reading some of the salt docs, it appears that solaris support is somewhat limited... is that correct?

01:16 ahammond jeffg_ the vast majority of salt is pretty unix agnostic
01:17 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt
01:17 ahammond jeffg_ but... I don't work with solaris, so... I don't know much about it.
01:17 jeffg_ ok.. I was reading section 2.2.8 on docs.saltstack.com
01:17 jeffg_ t has mainly been tested on Solaris 10 (sparc), though it is built for and has been tested minimally on Solaris 10 (x86), Solaris 9 (sparc/x86) and 11 (sparc/x86).

16:06 shm_get some salt like 'run' can be conditioned with unless/onlyif... how does one one then conditioned another later step to either of these 2 things: 1/ execute this step after the said run was 'evaluated' (wether it was ran or not' 2/ execute this step only if the previous 'run' step was actually run....
16:07 shm_get so far I have assumed that require: - run: foo took care of case 1/ and I have used minion-side file 'semaphore' for case 2/ but that is kind of ugly, and I was hoping there was a more 'proper' way
16:08 shm_get ps: sorry if that sound like a trivial question.. I've been 'salting' for a couple of days only... so I may have missed many 'obvious' things :-)

18:18 logix812 when running salt inside of a container with -v /etc/salt/pki:/etc/salt/pki:rw at startup I see: Generating keys: /etc/salt/pki/master but when I cd into the dir on the host I don't see anything created. This is a bit of a cross tech question, I'm guessing more people in #salt have tried running salt in a container vs people in #docker

18:23 logix812 container = docker container
18:26 xmj why do you think that what you do on the host (this way) affects the insides of the container ?
18:26 xmj or respectively that what you do in a container is reflected on the host?
18:26 xmj read up on what containers are first.
18:27 logix812 xmj: yes,  reading the docs here: http://docs.docker.io/use/working_with_volumes/

18:29 logix812 cd into the shared dir

23:02 dancat thinking maybe I'll try again with this question:
23:02 dancat has anyone seen salt (minion) hang on vagrant 1.5.1 and ubuntu 14.04? It is hanging on "Calling state.highstate... (this may take a while)"
23:03 akoumjian dancat: what happens when you set run_highstate: false in your Vagrantfile, and instead ssh into the box and run salt-call state.highstate manually?
23:04 dancat I'll check
23:08 mgw joined #salt
23:08 joehoyle joined #salt
23:13 dancat akoumjian: what exactly does state.highstate mean?
23:14 akoumjian dancat: Ah, okay. I'll take a step back. Is this your first time using salt?
23:15 dancat not exactly (close enough though) I had a simple provision script working a few weeks ago with 12.04
23:15 dancat I took state.highstate as a given and moved onto the next step
23:16 dancat previously I was able to do a simple install of a few packages
23:16 akoumjian state.highstate is the salt command that means "make sure all the targeted minions are in compliance with my formulas, as specifiedin my top file"
23:17 dancat okay
23:17 akoumjian If you run it using salt-call instead of salt, it only targets the locally running minion
23:17 akoumjian (you don't need a salt-master)
23:17 akoumjian This is what the vagrant plugin does.
23:17 akoumjian So you should vagrant ssh in. Then run "sudo salt-call state.highstate -l debug"
23:18 akoumjian The last part will give better output so you can see what is failing, if anything
23:18 dancat grat
23:19 akoumjian I'm also assuming you're sharing the file_roots in your Vagrantfile somewhere with the VM
23:20 dancat yes I am. In /srv/
23:20 bhosmer joined #salt
23:21 dancat the error I am getting is: http://pastie.org/9094306
23:21 elfixit joined #salt
23:22 dancat and the directory structure I am using for salt on the vagrant machine is: http://pastie.org/9094309
23:23 akoumjian dancat: Last thing you need is a custom minion config that specifies file_client: local
23:24 dancat Not sure I am following
23:24 dancat I also updated the error in pastie http://pastie.org/9094313
23:26 dancat I specify file_client: local in a minion.conf file but where should it be located on the vm/.
23:26 akoumjian Every salt minion has a config. Since you are running salt masterless inside the vagrant vm, you need to tell it to use itself as the location of all your formulas/pillar
23:27 akoumjian It should get copied to /etc/salt/minion
23:27 dancat alright
23:27 dancat does vagrant do this automatically? Where if highstate is not run I must do it manually?
23:27 dancat highstate is not run via vagrant
23:28 dancat btw thank you
23:28 akoumjian dancat: You can point vagrant to the file using this config option: https://github.com/saltstack/salty-vagrant#minion-options
23:29 akoumjian You give it the relative path to the file on your host machine. It will copy it over.
23:30 dancat Okay, I believe I am following
23:31 dancat I did do this step in the Vagrantfile
23:31 dancat but if I want to do this manually I'll just copy it over
23:33 dancat akoumjian: I am getting results that I can now at least debug now, thanks to you. I follow what you are sayinmg
23:34 akoumjian dancat: Hurray!
23:35 dancat It worked. I think the problem was that I named the file minion.conf (in the vagrantfile) and I guess it should be minion only
23:43 doanerock joined #salt
23:53 dancat oddly it is only working if I manually move the minion file with file_client: local to /etc/salt/minion, vagrant is still hanging "Calling high.state..."
23:53 dancat akoumjian: it appears that unless i move the file manually it is not getting to the /etc/salt/minion location
23:54 dancat and my vagrantfile appears correct (to me :)
