00:22 avienu So, I have salt creating an appserver now. It takes about 2 hours to finish. I want to use elastic load balancing on amazon. What’s the best way to do that, I assume I want to create the initial image with Salt, create an ami from it and then have amazon create new ones but then somehow get it to link up with Salt after added to the cluster?

00:31 allanparsons why does it take 2 hours??
00:31 allanparsons and use either salt-cloud
00:31 allanparsons or cloudformation files

00:44 avienu allanparsons: Because it has to compile a bunch of stuff by hand and get the latest version of the source code etc
00:45 allanparsons pre-compile that stuff and ship a .deb or .rpm
00:45 allanparsons we had the same issue w/ node
00:45 allanparsons and we just package dit up in a .deb package, shipped the package and issued a dpkg -i {{ deb }}
00:46 avienu allanparsons: Well, it’s FreeBSD, but yah, that’s sort of the main point is that we don’t have to create the entire thing so once we get the ports all on the appropriate versions make an ami of it so we don’t have to do it again until some security alert comes out or what not.

00:47 allanparsons oh geez
00:47 allanparsons dont make your own AMI
00:47 allanparsons way too much overhead.  make amaozn take care of patching
00:48 allanparsons trust me... i went down that road
00:51 allanparsons i use a combination of Cloudformation + Autoscale Groups + UserData Scripts to get a node into salt.
00:51 allanparsons and, if i have a bad node, i just kill it
00:51 allanparsons the ASG kicks in, and a new fresh node comes up

01:46 Eugene avienu - on first boot the AMI should run a provisioning script, and then touch a nonce file(which the script checks) so it doesn't re-run.
01:46 rome joined #salt
01:46 Eugene If you're rolling your own, you probably want to use the 169.254.169.254 api data
01:46 Eugene On first-run your salt-minion process will generate keys and connect to the master; if it's running in "open" mode then it will be accepted and there you go.
01:46 avienu Eugene: So I should probably set up a second salt-master inside of the amazon cluster so that I can do open mode, huh?
01:46 Eugene Indeed. Also do all of this inside a VPC

05:17 Eugene It's all well and good to have iptables in-memory, but boxes do get rebooted
05:20 Eugene It looks like I'd need to call a cmd.run to do this? Or rather cmd.wait, which seems to be targeted for 2014.2 :-/

19:14 cruatta joined #salt
19:15 RandalSchwartz do I need to restart the minion then?
19:15 RandalSchwartz or the master?
19:16 mway IIRC the minion will have the config pushed the next time highstate is run, but restart master
19:16 RandalSchwartz weird.  I deinstalled "pkg runit", but the master still thinks it is installed
19:17 RandalSchwartz it's like it's still using the old pkg_info command
19:17 RandalSchwartz are you sure I don't need the minion config on the minion instead of the master?
19:18 mway try running saltutil.sync_all and see if that helps
19:19 mway not 100% sure, though as far as I know, unless it's explicitly set on the minion, the master will push the config changes
19:19 RandalSchwartz nope - still thinks it is installed
19:21 RandalSchwartz That was it.  It has to be on the *minion*
19:22 RandalSchwartz so maybe the minion file on the master is ignored

22:13 piloupy while it should check for the python libs for the given "bin_env" parameter (/usr/bin/pip3.3 ==> implies to look in /usr/lib/python3.3)
22:13 piloupy something like that...
22:13 manfred yeah
22:13 piloupy manfred : ok
22:14 piloupy I wasn't sure it was a real bug, and I wanted to check that here first :)
22:14 manfred no worries :)
22:15 manfred yeah it should be checking for the one that you are trying to install with, I just have to sit down and figure out how to do that, since salt is running as python2 :)
22:15 manfred piloupy: when salt is finally python3 compatible, it will make things easier :P
22:19 piloupy manfred : +1 :)
22:19 piloupy having python code compatible for python2 & 3 is really troublesome
22:20 manfred well
22:20 manfred with python 3.3 and especially with 3.4, they made it much easier to make it compatible with both
22:20 manfred afaik, the last thing salt needs, is to get rid of m2crypto, but mostly just waiting for raet, or waiting to be able to use zeromq's crypto layer

22:26 piloupy manfred : you know, I've spent several days trying to make an RPM of python 3.4 for CentOS 6.5, but didn't manage to do it
22:26 piloupy making a spec file for RPM is really complicated... at least for me :(
22:26 piloupy it was to get rid of the pip & virtualenv matter
22:27 piloupy but I guess I'll have to wait that the fedora team make a python 3.4 RPM and backport it to centos
22:27 manfred i know a couple guys who work for on IUS, they are supposed to be working on they python3.4 packages
22:28 piloupy I don't know IUS, maybe the same that make this EL updated packages : http://jur-linux.org/rpms/el-updates/6.5/x86_64/
22:28 piloupy I took python 3.3 from there
22:28 manfred piloupy: https://iuscommunity.org/pages/About.html
22:28 manfred it is our rpm development team at rackspace
22:29 piloupy wow, sounds nice :)

22:31 manfred python34 packages should be in ius testing as of the 21st
22:31 manfred https://iuscommunity.org/pages/FAQs.html?highlight=testing#how-do-i-install-packages-from-testing
22:32 piloupy manfred : man... seriously, can I give you a kiss ? :)
22:32 manfred please don't :P
22:32 piloupy I wasted days and days for something like that
22:33 piloupy I was about to create a community to bring up-to-date RPM for RHEL/CentOS...
22:33 manfred i will let ben know you love him
22:33 piloupy I was really fed up of RH policy to have old packages...
22:33 manfred so
22:33 manfred they are supposed to be starting to provide channels of newer packages as well
22:34 manfred specifically for stuff like mysql
22:34 manfred i haven't been paying that much attention to it, but they are supposed to have been working on it

22:35 manfred that is rhel 5, but i know there is a rhel6 one too

22:36 piloupy manfred : well, RH has provided a repo for that, but it's over-complicated to use it
22:37 piloupy https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Software_Collections/1/html-single/1.0_Release_Notes/index.html
22:37 piloupy the infamous RH Software Collection (SCL)
22:37 manfred yeah that one
22:37 piloupy but you have to enable it for each binary call
22:38 piloupy eg : scl enable python33 python3 my_file.py
22:38 manfred yeah, i am happy they finally started doing that stuff, but yeah
22:38 piloupy or call first : scl enable python33 bash
22:38 manfred heh yeah

22:48 dstufft Helium is in the in deleopment version of Saltsack? or is it released? (An aside, the use of code names in the docs to mark what version stuff is available in is confusing ;( )
22:49 manfred helium is the next version
22:50 manfred 2014.1.* is hydrogen
22:50 manfred if it is marked as a code name, it isn't released yet
22:50 dstufft Bleh, and the per repo gtifs_root isn't available in Hydrogen
22:50 dstufft hmm
22:50 dstufft How stable is saltstack's develop branch
22:50 dstufft am I going to regret running from it?
22:51 manfred i maintain my own
22:51 manfred and only merge on days when I know it is working (usually it is stable, but every once in a while it gets fucked up for a couple hours)
22:51 dstufft Also is there a release schedule where it says what the target release dates for future releases are? or is it "when it's ready" ?
22:52 manfred that i do not know
22:54 dstufft okies
22:54 dstufft thanks a lot
