01:41 AnswerGuy Is there a way to get the saltmaster to log the source IP address from which a given Salt-key submission is coming?

01:47 AnswerGuy Also I'm building a Nagios passive check around salt '*' cmd.run cmd='date +%s' ... (though actually from within a Python script calling the salt.client.LocalClient()) ... is there a way to skip the remote fork()/exec() of a shell and date commands?  Just query the minions and have them return the results of int(time.time())?

17:38 obimod hey all
17:40 obimod have  a quick question... if machine A is a masterless minion which sets itself up as a master, generates a vpn node which emits a master react event which hits the master's "reactor/vpn_on.sls" file, can I there trigger the master (being a masterless minion) to update the vpn client configuration? Could I just have a cmd.run call within the vpn_on.sls reaction sls file?
17:41 obimod **vpn client configurtion for itself
17:41 obimod so pretty much can I have a minion emit a master reaction to update the master, being a masterless minion
17:42 obimod lazy disclaimer: haven't tried it myself yet

17:52 joseph_ allo...i am brand new to salt community and i have a question about environments. I looked through the documentation and I haven't been able to figure out what i have been doing wrong.
17:52 joseph_ whenever i try to use a non-base environment, i get this error "File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/salt/state.py", line 2255, in render_highstate     statefiles = fnmatch.filter(self.avail[env], sls_match) KeyError: 'dev'"

17:59 obimod @joseph_ I think the file_roots keys coorespond to the "environment" directive
18:00 obimod file_roots goes into the master config file
18:00 obimod not into a state file
18:00 joseph_ it doesn't go into top.sls?
18:00 obimod nope
18:00 joseph_ ohhhh
18:01 joseph_ so the top.sls only uses the defined environments, it doesn't define them itself
18:01 joseph_ okaaaay
18:01 obimod top.sls is used in the pillar and srv/salt directory
18:01 war2 joined #salt
18:01 obimod top.sls is used in any "top" directory that stores SLS files
18:02 obimod encrypted pillars, salt fileserver directories (file_roots directivess), etc.
18:02 obimod it is used to crunch everything into a single python dictionary
18:03 nmistry joined #salt
18:03 ajw0100 joined #salt
18:04 joseph_ @obimod, i thought you could have one top.sls for all environments? is that not so?
18:04 joseph_ for example, i could have /srv/salt/qa and /srv/salt/dev....could i have a single top.sls that defines what states will be applied for all environments?
18:04 joseph_ or should i have a top.sls in the root directory of each environment?
18:06 faldridge joined #salt
18:07 obimod I think base is applies to all, but my experience is a bit limited as well
18:07 obimod but i should think that there would be conflicts
18:07 it_dude joined #salt
18:09 joseph_ what confused me is this info here: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/top.html
18:09 obimod like, if you have a base nginx state (i.e. /srv/salt/nginx/init.sls) and a dev nginx state (i.e. /srv/dev/nginx/init.sls) there is some algorithm salt uses to determine one, if not both, states to execute
18:09 joseph_ in the environments section, it talks about setting the file_roots directory so i assumed i could set that in top.sls
18:11 joseph_ also if you look here https://gist.github.com/jaloren/bbeeb088d5887748d117
18:11 joseph_ that's the example directly pullled from the default /etc/salt/master conf
18:11 obimod yea, so there can be key conflicts
18:11 obimod the base file_root will apply to everything
18:11 joseph_ and that's not recommended?
18:11 obimod so don't place states in base and dev
18:11 obimod no, it is recommended
18:12 joseph_ okay so the base is /srv/salt and the dev environment's root directory could be within that
18:12 joseph_ and that's okay?
18:12 obimod all i'm doing is exploring the potential KeyError thrown when base/nginx/init.sls and dev/nginx/init.sls both exist
18:12 joseph_ ah i see ....yes i am not even at the point of doing things with init.sls
18:12 obimod nah, i wouldn't do that either
18:12 obimod sorry, i mistyped up there
18:13 joseph_ so stay away from the default example :)?
18:13 obimod heh, srv/salt/base and srv/salt/dev is how to do it
18:13 joseph_ and never nest root directories from multiple environments within one naother?
18:13 obimod that way you don't have a dev "state" and a dev "environment" as the same thing
18:13 obimod right
18:13 joseph_ got it
18:13 joseph_ that seems reasonable
18:14 obimod maybe an endless loop would come up
18:14 obimod if that were to happen
18:14 joseph_ iright
18:14 joseph_ i am really liking salt overall but running commands is very annoying because if a failure occurs on a minion that error isn't returned to you
18:14 vxitch any plans to bring 2014.1.3 to EPEL?
18:16 obimod @joseph_ it seems flexible enough that there could be an effective workaround unless that failure disconnected the minion from the master
18:16 obimod but i think states can verify themselves
18:17 obimod depends on the command, but the cmd module has a "stateful" directive that might help you out
18:17 obimod http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.cmd.html
18:17 vxitch i'm getting the following error, master and minion are both 2014.1.0. is this not available in my version or is there another problem? the docs indicate this feature has existed prior to 2014.1.0
