00:42 chenrano2002 hello experts, we can use salt master to control/run/cmd to salt minion, is it possible to let salt minion to control master by contrast? i,e in my practise, 'salt <minion> test.ping' return True when running this command on salt machine, but the command return 'SaltReqTimeoutError' when running on the minion machine. Any suggestion/idea, thanks
00:44 jcockhren chenrano2002: the minion can't control the master
00:44 jcockhren chenrano2002: when running a command on the minion it uses: salt-call
00:45 jcockhren therefore, running 'salt <minion> test.ping' on the master is like calling 'salt-call test.ping' on the minion
00:46 it_dude joined #salt
00:46 chenrano2002 but salt-call is for local use, right? if I also setup itself as one minion on the master, is it possible to run cmd on master?
00:48 chenrano2002 jcockhren, my case is like this,  i have one ec2 host, and want to control it using my home desktop, do you have any idea?
00:48 jcockhren your desktop would be the master and the ec2 host would be the minion
00:49 chenrano2002 but the desktop is in internal, have no public hostname/IP
00:49 jcockhren yes it does
00:49 jcockhren whatsmyipaddress.com or something
00:49 jcockhren the minion will have to be able to reach the master
00:50 jcockhren OR
00:50 ^Koala joined #salt
00:50 jcockhren instead of using the zeromq transport, you could use the salt-ssh transport
00:50 jcockhren http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/ssh/
00:51 chenrano2002 yes, salt-ssh is ok. but the issue is that the SSH protocol is not allowed in my network
00:51 jcockhren hmm.
00:52 chenrano2002 i found salt-call publish.publish to public command to all minion. but look like too expensive
00:53 manfred chenrano2002: publish.publish is really the only way to do that right now i think
00:53 manfred chenrano2002: that may change when raet stableizes, and you can talk between minions better
00:53 chenrano2002 'salt' only work on master, am I right?
00:53 manfred yes
00:53 chenrano2002 ok, that remove my misunderstand
00:54 manfred you could do {% set ipaddrs =  salt['publish.publish']('network.ip_addrs', {}) %} in a state file for your jinja stuff
00:54 manfred but yeah, until raet comes out
00:54 manfred peering really is dependent to go through the master
00:54 chenrano2002 in my case ,how about cp file between master and minion? I tried module.cp using 'salt'. it failed
00:55 manfred chenrano2002: are you trying to move something from one minion to another?
00:55 chenrano2002 sorry, what does 'raet' mean?
00:55 manfred https://github.com/saltstack/raet
00:55 manfred it is the protocol that they are building, to go along with zmq
00:56 AlexM850 joined #salt
00:56 manfred you could replace zmq with it, it will allow you to do extra things
00:56 manfred but it isn't ready yet from what I have seen
00:56 chenrano2002 manfred, my issue is like this, SSH protoolc is not allowd in the network, I want to remote control ec2 host,
00:57 manfred chenrano2002: if you are using zmq, you can do a publish.publish using salt-call.
00:57 chenrano2002 remote run command and copy files, that is ok
00:57 manfred yeah
00:58 manfred i would just use the default zmq transport
00:58 chenrano2002 right, I tried salt-call public , it works well. but how about cp files?
00:59 chenrano2002 regarding as raet, i havn't use it, I will make some practise first
00:59 manfred did salt-call cp.get_file work?
00:59 manfred chenrano2002: don't worry about raet yet, it isn't stabelized from what I have seen yet
01:00 chenrano2002 can you show some cp example?
01:01 chenrano2002 (vdev)[ray@fedora vdev]$ salt-call hellostack cp.push /etc/fstab

01:01 manfred cp.push is for pushing from the minion to the master
01:01 manfred you would do
01:01 manfred salt-call cp.push /etc/fstab
01:01 chenrano2002 hellostack is the minmin running on master
01:01 manfred from yourminion
01:01 manfred you don't pass a minion id when using salt-call
01:01 mateoconfeugo joined #salt
01:01 manfred only with 'salt'
01:01 manfred salt-call is ... for the minion you are on
01:02 chenrano2002 mmm, let me try
01:02 manfred salt 'hellostack' cp.push /etc/fstab, would be the command your master runs
01:02 manfred so
01:02 manfred if your minion is also the master
01:02 manfred you could use either salt-call cp.push /etc/fstab or salt $(hostname) cp.push /etc/fstab
01:02 chenrano2002 (vdev)[ray@fedora vdev]$ salt-call hellostack cp.push /etc/fstab

01:03 manfred just
01:03 manfred salt-call cp.push /etc/fstab
01:03 chenrano2002 sorry. wrong msg
01:03 chenrano2002 (vdev)[ray@fedora vdev]$ salt-call saltdev cp.push /etc/fstab

01:08 chenrano2002 one more quesion, push file from minion to master is ok, how to get file from master?
01:08 manfred it is in /var/cache/salt/ something... i forget where
01:09 manfred if you are trying to push it to another minion, you can get_file directly to the /var/cache file
01:09 manfred or you can use minion fs
01:09 manfred http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/minionfs.html
01:09 chenrano2002 I found the file, I mean get any file on master to minion
01:09 manfred oh
01:09 manfred salt cp.get_file
01:09 manfred or ... w/e
01:10 manfred use the cp.get_file module iirc

01:13 manfred if you use salt-cp
01:13 manfred you don't need salt:/
01:13 manfred just
01:13 manfred salt-cp 'minionname' /etc/fstab /tmp/ddddd

12:54 engblom sandeep: Enough of permission that the user running the salt-master has access to that directory.
12:54 engblom sandeep: If salt-master is run as root, then only the root need read permission.

14:52 nkuttler does somebody know a formula repo that loops over pillars or grains and requires different packages depending on config? not really sure what's the best approach for that
14:56 nkuttler actually, my only problem is that i get duplicate include IDs in my sls files, and i can work around that, but it doesn't feel very clean

15:04 Furao oh my… these formulas are more than a year old, so ugly
15:04 Furao more like line 68

15:05 nkuttler Furao: "include" is fixed, that's the entire problem
15:05 nkuttler actually..
15:06 nkuttler maybe i can generate smaller sls files instead of one huge..
15:07 Furao if you create multiple .sls that ends included at the end (trough a state.highstate)
15:08 Furao the content of all sls will be process a single big dictionnary
15:08 nkuttler sure, but the includes are not part of the dict
15:08 Furao the only case where I get duplicate ID is when for some reason a $formula and $formula.absent get included at the same time.
15:08 nkuttler or are they? not sure actually, i would have thought they get replaced with what they include
15:09 Furao as I keep the same ID in both $formula/init.sls and $formula/absent.sls
15:09 nkuttler yeah, i work with {% includes %}
15:09 Furao run state.show_highstate
15:09 nkuttler ah, right
15:09 Furao it will display the dict where all sls are included
15:10 Furao or fail if duplicated id

17:52 umeboshi Hi guys!
17:52 umeboshi I have been working on a project using salt to make an automated network installer
17:53 umeboshi The minions will be debian and windows 7 machines.
17:53 jtang1 joined #salt
17:53 it_dude_ joined #salt
17:53 umeboshi The project is using vagrant and virtualbox to establish the environment, and this is using the salt provisioner as well
17:54 jchen is there a way to manage ldap using saltstack? From what I've read, there's only read-only and ldap authentication support.
17:54 umeboshi The states are somewhat interesting, as the configuration does it's best to automate the setup as much as possible.
17:54 jtang3 joined #salt
17:55 umeboshi The website for the project is here: http://umeboshi2.github.io/paella/
17:56 umeboshi I have been using mako very extensively, as it's recommended for the debian packages.  However, getting mako to work with the windows minions has proven difficult.
17:56 jtang1 joined #salt
17:57 umeboshi While I have been tasked with having to build another windows installer myself that includes mako, I have thought about automating the build process using vagrant and salt
17:57 taion809 joined #salt
17:58 umeboshi The ability to boot and install a windows 7 machine from the network and execute unattended scripts on it is possible and this is being done anyway
17:58 jtang2 joined #salt
17:59 umeboshi Creating a system that uses vagrant and salt to create a virtual machine whose only purpose is to build the salt installer could be very valuable in the future.
