00:46 sunkist I have some existing salt states and I want to include salt-formulas.  I would copy the foo-formula directory into my states tree, but the actual SLS files are in foo-formula/foo.
00:47 manfred sunkist: use gitfs
00:47 manfred http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/development/conventions/formulas.html
00:47 sunkist Is it okay to download foo-formula into a separate out-of-tree directory and just symlink the foo-formula/foo directory as /srv/salt/foo?
00:48 manfred you can do that, but it is silly, you can just use gitfs, and salt will know how to handle the other directory
00:49 sunkist Thanks manfred.
00:49 sunkist I read the entire document you sent, but I wasn't initially sure if I liked the idea of githubbing the formulas I wanted.
00:50 manfred gitfs is the best thing
00:53 sunkist manfred, would it be correct to summarize salt+gitfs as "the way you keep your state repo in ONE place"?
00:54 sunkist I want to make sure I know what problem it solves.

05:15 sunkist Question: why aren't salt formulas tagged with semantic version numbers?
05:17 Corey Not a horrible idea, but it'd require a bit of work to implement.
05:17 Corey Formulas are contributed, the SaltStack staff don't have time to vet each one to that depth I'd imagine.
05:20 mpanetta joined #salt
05:21 sunkist The salt-formulas walkthrough recommends buffering formulas in your own github account to protect yourself from upstream changes that could break your deployment.
05:22 Corey A good decision.
05:22 sunkist If there were version numbers, you could document the version tag that you're using--so upstream changes wouldn't affect you until you wratcheted your own local version number.
05:24 sunkist I was involved in the chef world briefly before I discovered salt.
05:24 sunkist Their "recipes" have semantic versions...
05:25 sunkist But hey--I can just clone the formulas and add my own tags!

16:08 viq orendb: I guess place them in separate dirs in /srv and tell salt about them
16:08 viq Alternatively, though it would be more effort, check out say apache-formula somewhere else, then move the apache subdir into your salt roots
16:09 viq (if it indeed is the case that gitfs is not supported, which I don't know)

18:15 manfred don't do that
18:15 manfred if you are going to use package from the archlinux aur, you should maintain them in your own repository, and install from that
