00:12 tedski I have some pillar data in the form of a list.  I'd like to loop over that list in a jinja templated file.  I've tried this way with no luck:  http://pastie.org/9291046
00:12 tedski in that paste, pillar['fooitems'] would return a list
00:21 tedski nevermind, that does work.  i had a '-' character in my pillar name.

16:04 viq Bah, WTF, salt doesn't see the states in gitfs...
16:07 babilen viq: Did you try running "salt-run fileserver.update"? What about removing /var/cache/salt/master/gitfs ? What is in /var/cache/salt/master/gitfs/refs/ ?

16:10 viq babilen: yes, removed /var/cache/salt/*, http://pbot.rmdir.de/rdudSgFrq3zWawhsp2hyyg
16:11 viq (and restarted master and minion after rm)
16:12 babilen viq: Okay, what happens if you run "salt-run fileserver.update" now? What's the content of it? Can you clone the repo manually as root? How did you configure it in your master conf (might want to paste that too) ?
16:13 babilen telefphone
16:15 viq http://pbot.rmdir.de/O62-3rWHfbXIfDGq5Zz-2g and yes, I can clone it manually as _salt-master

18:07 keyvan hi there
18:08 otter768 joined #salt
18:09 keyvan i am new to salt -- trying to figure out which distro to settle on for a particular state ive created... but each is different. e.g. Debian doesnt have node.js in the repo but has ffmpeg, Ubuntu has node.js but not ffmpeg, Arch has both but might be a bit dangerous to use in production, etc.. what are some ways to deal with this issue or do i just have to tailor my states to a particular distro and stick with it ?
18:17 Katafalkas joined #salt
18:40 babilen keyvan: Debian has nodejs (wheezy-backports: 0.10.26~dfsg1-1~bpo70+1; jessie: 0.10.28~dfsg-2; sid: 0.10.29~dfsg-1)
18:40 chiui joined #salt
18:41 joehillen joined #salt
18:42 babilen keyvan: But to answer your question: You can easily tailor your states/formulas to different distributions, by using grains['os'] or grains['os_family']. See http://jinja.pocoo.org/docs/templates/#if for the jinja side of it. If jinja isn't powerful enough to express that you can also write states or pillars in python.
18:43 babilen keyvan: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/development/conventions/formulas.html contains some good information on how to write "formulas" (i.e. general purpose states that work on various distributions and can be configured with pillars). You can find examples on https://github.com/saltstack-formulas
18:44 babilen viq: Can you clone that as root? Can you run your master in debug mode with "salt-master -ldebug" (stop all running salt-master processes first) and check if you find anything of interest in the logs?
18:46 Whissi joined #salt
18:47 babilen keyvan: I would recommend against writing specific foo.debian, foo.ubuntu, foo.arch, foo.* states, but write foo and make it work with all three (by making certain things optional). Generally speaking "static" bits like package/service names should go in maps.jinja and "variable" bits such as, for example, the interfaces a service listens on and such things should be configured in pillars.

20:01 viq babilen: no, nothing interesting in logs, just "updating fileserver cache" and "fetching from git+ssh://..."
20:01 babilen viq: Oh, I didn't see that you set that option in the master config you pasted (hence the question)
20:02 viq babilen: ah, sorry
