09:07 sieve Is there someway to disable keys?
09:07 sieve I have a lot of hosts that are being constantly reinstalled
09:08 sieve this causes a problem with keys
09:08 sieve I have to constantly Delete and add keys
09:08 sieve I wonder if the salt master can be told to ignore keys

13:59 lopez hi.. I'm trying to use some pillar data defined in earlier pillar states in later pillar states
14:00 lopez basically, i'm trying to achieve 'grains' in 'pillar' - based on the minion id.
14:01 lopez but it seems that my pillar['item'] defined earlier is not available in jinja in another pillar sls (which in theory is defined later).
14:01 oz_akan joined #salt
14:01 lopez am I working with the wrong assumption that parts of pillar data defined earlier can be used in pillar-jinja down the path...?
14:08 viq lopez: you can't use pillars in pillars
14:08 lopez viq: I feared it :/
14:08 viq pillars are processed at once, thus undefined until finished
14:08 lopez now found a workaround in the specific case (as in some others too) - by using import_yaml
14:09 lopez almost too extensively i'd say
14:09 xmj viq: hey
14:09 xmj how is tricks? :)
14:09 xmj viq: i'll soon have to extend the gitlab formula to work on freebsd.
14:09 xmj (by the time i have a working gitlab port, that is.)
14:09 lopez i love salt, but it's a crazy world sometimes (and i'm still somewhat a newbie...)
14:11 viq xmj: oh, cool. I haven't really had time (or, uhm, motivation) to work on gitlab recently. Somewhat fucked by the fact that at work we have it on debian, where there I haven't really found a good way to get the required ruby 2, and the rest of the team have the attitude of "why upgrade? it works"
14:11 xmj viq: i see
14:12 xmj viq: porting gitlab is a PITA, lots of ports it uses require upgrading and ruby >~ is a beast.
14:12 xmj but i do want it running on my own freebsd boxen, so i'll have to suck it up and do it eventually.
14:13 viq xmj: also don't know if you've seen https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/gitlab-formula/issues/3#issuecomment-48839558
14:13 viq xmj: cool, when you do maybe I'll install it on mine at home ;)
14:14 xmj viq: i'm about to start a freebsd hosting company. so .. ... requiring some centos box to run gitlab wouldn't be the best signal
14:14 * xmj chuckles.
14:14 viq :D
14:15 viq Though I guess with a bit of modifications the formula should install gitlab on freebsd as well. But yeah, a port would be much nicer
14:17 xmj by the time there's a port within 7 days there'll be 'binary packages'
14:17 xmj which is what i'm really after
14:17 xmj pkg install gitlab :)
14:17 viq yeah :)
14:17 xmj also: gitlab:\n  - pkg.installed
14:18 viq Yeah, and then just manage config
14:18 xmj bingo
14:18 xmj viq: did your friend sort out his issues?
14:20 viq not quite, AFAIK
14:21 elfixit1 joined #salt
14:24 viq Compounded by the fact that his two biggest customers went out of business...
14:24 viq huh, trying to install openstack via RDO on fedora 20 with 2GB RAM, and it's swapping quite heavily...
14:25 xmj ouch
14:25 xmj openstack is a funny one.
14:26 viq what do you mean?
14:27 xmj there's a good deal ongoing making it run on fbsd :)
14:27 xmj viq: http://www.bsdcan.org/2014/schedule/track/Hacking/478.en.html
14:27 viq ooh, interesting
14:28 xmj there should be a yt video of that talk somewhere

14:32 viq thanks
14:33 xmj viq: will you be around in sofia?
14:33 NV hmm, anyone using salt on freebsd around?
14:33 go|dfish joined #salt
14:33 xmj here's one.
14:33 NV i think someone munged the packaging
14:33 NV using pkgng?
14:33 xmj NV: got a PR?
14:33 NV not yet
14:33 viq xmj: the way my finances look currently, unlikely
14:33 NV curious if im just doing something retarded first before making a fool of myself :P
14:34 xmj interesting
14:34 xmj NV: pkg install py27-salt ?
14:34 NV yup
14:34 NV basically running any salt command i get -- pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: salt==2014.1.5
14:34 xmj which part isn't working?
14:34 NV any salt command
14:34 xmj hold on
14:34 xmj salt package should be 2014.1.7.
14:35 xmj NV: which fbsd version? 10? 9.2/9.3?
14:35 NV 10
14:35 NV not sure if the pkgng bin repos have updated to 2014.1.7 yet?
14:35 xmj no they havent
14:35 xmj they should have
14:37 NV hmm might wait til it lands and try that incase it's already fixed
14:37 NV guessing you built your own packages?
14:44 bhosmer joined #salt
14:44 xmj NV: package rebuilds are automatically done once a week
14:44 xmj NV: wednesday nights, i think. so it -should- already be 2014.1.7, as the port is.
14:45 xmj cedwards: sent the update blazingly fast after the announcement :)
14:46 mechanicalduck joined #salt
14:47 NV its weird though, i have some systems with 2014.1.5 working fine, and some are broken
14:47 NV and there wasn't any changes to the port that i can see
14:47 tkharju2 joined #salt
14:48 NV on working systems i notice that /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/salt-2014.1.5-py2.7.egg-info/* exists, whereas on broken systems it does not
14:48 NV forcing a reinstall on a working system breaks it
14:48 NV so its more like that pkgng is doing something silly, rather than the port being broken
14:49 tkharju3 joined #salt
14:50 tkharju4 joined #salt
14:51 xmj NV: use ports for now, i'll poke people.
14:52 xmj NV: the port isn't broken per se. the package is just too old.
14:52 NV cheers, i know fairly little about python packaging go figure
14:52 NV eh you reccon? what about the missing egg-info stuff?
14:53 NV doing a pkg info -l py27-salt the egg-info shows as being in the plist for working packages, but absent from the plist on broken boxes
14:53 NV so its like the plist generation is wrong for whatever reason
14:53 viq NV: portsnap fetch update || portsnap fetch extract && portmaster -tdr py27-salt
14:54 NV viq: sure - doesn't explain what's wrong with the binpkgs though
14:54 xmj i'll ask culot@, he committed cedwards's PR
14:55 xmj NV: can you please create a PR for that?

16:16 steveoliver i've got a 2014.1.4 minion (ubuntu 12.10), and a 2014.1.5 master (ubuntu 12.04), trying to use mysql.db_create in my mysql state.  I'm getting state mysql.db_create in sls <mysql> is unavailable.
16:17 steveoliver I wish I knew /why/ it was unavailable :)
16:17 steveoliver i guess a salt-minion -l debug should do it…

17:13 babilen steveoliver: One of the most frequent reasons is that you are missing the Python module needed for that state module on the minion and it is therefore not loaded/available (unless you made a mistake in the sls path)
17:14 steveoliver babilen: right, I read that, and it was the first thing I did.  like i said, the module works from the CLI, just not from within state file decs yet
17:14 steveoliver i'll probably keep hacking at it this am
