06:06 babilen FeatherKing: I am now, what was it?
06:17 FeatherKing babilen: not totally sure eactly, but the 'accept' events were just flooding and basically ddos the master
06:17 FeatherKing so i cleared out the pki of all minion keys
06:17 FeatherKing put the pub master ones back
06:17 FeatherKing and then accepted like really small groups
06:17 FeatherKing a,b,c*
06:18 FeatherKing there would be a cpu spike as the keys were accepted and then slowly i could see the overall cpu trending down
06:18 FeatherKing when i had readded them all, there were no more 'accept' events
06:18 FeatherKing idle cpu
06:18 babilen Yeah, that's a sensible approach in that unfortunate situation
06:18 FeatherKing i really dont know how i got there
06:18 FeatherKing ive run a couple commands to all of them without batch
06:18 FeatherKing and with batch
06:19 FeatherKing all seems to be working
06:19 FeatherKing then when i could run jobs.active
06:19 FeatherKing i could see about 5 jobs that never finished from this morning
06:19 FeatherKing so i killed those
06:20 FeatherKing but anyway i dont know why the minions would flood with accept even though the keys were accepted
06:20 FeatherKing long ago
06:22 FeatherKing also i am up to 20 workers now, 4cpu 4gb
06:22 FeatherKing seems to run quick, no missed results

08:10 JayC morning all.. I'm new to salt and trying to setup a multimaster with failover arch.. I've been reading the 3.4.5 tut but am having a hard time making sense out of it.. anyone kind enough to guide me through?
08:10 JayC allready have a master up with a few minions..

09:59 babilen JayC: What exactly is it that you have problems with? I find it to be pretty straightforward.
10:02 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt
10:07 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt
10:10 JayC babilen: well I got stopped quite early in the process as the 'master_sign_pubkey: True' does not seem to work for me.. no extra keys are being generated in the /pki folder.. Am running latest salt on debian wheezy (did the install using apt-get)
10:12 JayC the option needs to go in my /etc/salt/master file right? Is the locaztion in the conf file important?
10:13 babilen JayC: Yes, that was my understanding. You *did* restart the master, didn't you?
10:13 JayC yup
10:15 babilen JayC: Okay, could you show me the content of /etc/salt/pki/master on http://paste.debian.net ? Also paste your master conf (redact personal information, if any) and the output of running "salt-master -ldebug" (you'd have to stop the service first)
10:15 kedo39 joined #salt
10:16 babilen Throw in "apt-cache policy salt-master" and the output of "salt --versions" for great fun
10:16 JayC also tried to set the 'master_key_sign_name:' to 'master001_sign' but nothing.. the master is not complaining... sure... will do so in a min..
10:16 babilen You can leave out the "salt-master -ldebug" to begin with.
10:23 babilen JayC: ping?
10:25 JayC lol
10:25 JayC yeah sorry for the delay
10:25 JayC http://paste.debian.net/113275/
10:25 JayC had to get my conf file home to upload it
10:26 babilen JayC: fwiw, I would remove all those comments from that file. It is so hard to figure out what is being set and what not :)
10:26 babilen You are missing the output of "ls -la /etc/salt/pki/master" and "apt-cache policy salt-master"
10:27 JayC babilen: yeah I will when I'm done testing... lol... yup it seems for the output... let me redo that
10:27 babilen (oh, and "salt --versions")
10:28 JayC http://paste.debian.net/113276/
10:28 JayC babilen: there.. all in
10:29 bhosmer joined #salt
10:30 babilen JayC: What about "tree /etc/salt" and could you now also stop the master and run "salt-master -ldebug" ?
10:31 JayC babilen: that's for the debug output.. http://paste.debian.net/113277/
10:33 JayC babilen: and here is the tree.. http://paste.debian.net/113278/
10:34 babilen JayC: It appears that this feature is not supported in 2014.1 but will be released with 2014.7
10:36 babilen At least I could find no mention of "master_sign_pubkey" in the 2014.1 branch, but found it in the 2014.7 one. Normally it would be mentioned if features such as that would only be available in Helium (i.e. the codename for 2014.7)
10:37 babilen (which is a problem if you look at the documentation for HEAD)
10:38 babilen JayC: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/releases/2014.7.0.html → "26.2.1.1.15. Multi Master Failover Additions - Connecting to multiple masters is more dynamic then ever"
10:38 JayC babilen: hmm... so no chocolate?.. yup that's what I was doing I guess.. http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/multimaster_pki.html..  does that mean I need to install from git source if I want the feature?
10:38 babilen s/then/than (*sigh*, native speakers)
10:39 babilen JayC: I wouldn't necessarily deploy HEAD in production (you could also go 2014.7), but I'd wait for the proper release. We are all doing that :)
10:41 JayC me is the natural impatient overcaffeinated type.. lol
10:41 JayC well I guess I'll wait
10:41 JayC damn... it all seemed to good to be true
10:41 JayC ;p
10:43 JayC babilen: ok while I'm here waiting for the appropriate release maybe you can help me understand a few more things.. the root_files dir structure  needs to be created manually right? The master is not going to create the dir by itself?
10:48 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt
10:49 babilen JayC: I never used that, but yeah
10:50 babilen Well, that's not true .. some of my test setups make use of file_roots and I use it to deploy files I don't want to check into git (e.g. .deb packages)
10:53 JayC babilen: ok.. one last thing.. I use linux-vserver inf on my physical hosts (and it comes with vserver-utils).. What is in your opinion the best approach.. Install a minion on each vserver or just one on the host and use standard cmds and vserver-utils to retrieve the info I need?
10:53 babilen We run minions in each VM we want to manage (regardless of physical location)
10:57 JayC and it makes sense for the state management part.. many thanks for helping me out babilen.. have a great WE.. I'll be back later when I get a better grasp of the states/grains/pillar approach for more questions.. thanks again..
10:59 babilen Sure. You might want to read http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/development/conventions/formulas.html to learn about some "best practices" in formula/state design
11:00 ramishra joined #salt
11:01 JayC right.. more reading.. lol.. and I thought I could do without it.. ;).. TA
11:04 babilen There will always be more to read ;)
11:04 JayC babilen: sorry for the dumb question but how do I target documentation for a specific version of salt?
11:05 kedo39 joined #salt
11:05 JayC yeah.. It seems I've been reading manual for ever.. ;p
11:07 JayC babilen: ^^ never mind... found it..
11:08 babilen Great!
11:12 JayC babilen: well I did get to the https://readthedocs.org/projects/salt/downloads/ but it doesn't seem to include doc for lates stable 2014.1.7? any clue?
11:36 eliasp JayC: readthedocs was discontinued as a documentation platform for SaltStack
11:37 eliasp JayC: all documentation is now on docs.saltstack.com, but TBH I have no clue how to access other docs versions than 'develop'
11:40 eliasp hmm, docs.saltstack.com actually still refers to salt.rtfd.org for other versions…
11:42 JayC eliasp: tks for the heads up eliasp.. yup had seen that and the current stable is not listed there... well.. I guess that leaves me no other choice than trying out dev branch.. lol

15:00 JayC jambala: shoot.. u never know.. ;p
15:01 jambala Thanks, here it goes: Say you have two matching rules A and B
15:02 jambala A being '*' and B being 'myhost'
15:02 jambala Now, a minion with the hostname 'myhost' would obviously match both, right?
15:03 jambala What I need to know is: in what order are these matches processed?
15:04 JayC jambala: from my understanding yes but now I'm not sure if there is an inheritance of rules or if it will match in order or just one rule... sorry I can't help more for the moment... still testing myself
15:05 JayC jambala: hang in there someone will surely pick it up if I don't find an answer

20:31 KaaK_ Anyone used salt to idempotently insert mysql rows?

20:43 babilen there are mysql states
20:45 Luke joined #salt
20:49 Outlander joined #salt
20:49 KaaK_ babilen, these are for mysql users and tables and such -- not arbitrary sql. There is however a query method in the mysql module, but this will not be stateful unless I write clever states
20:50 KaaK_ can i condictionally run a state if and only if another state is successful?
20:51 eliasp KaaK_: sure, that's what 'require' is for
20:51 eliasp KaaK_: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/requisites.html
20:52 KaaK_ eliasp, will this also work if i envoke a module? How is a modules `successfullness` determined?
20:53 ramishra joined #salt
20:53 KaaK_ The way i see it -- I will need a state that runs a SELECT for my row, and if it fails then and only then run a state that does an INSERT/UPDATE
20:53 bezeee joined #salt
20:54 KaaK_ I think i see how it can be done by using the module state to invoke mysql.query -- but I do have some doubts
