02:17 nitay say I have sls A and B, I want some task A.a to require B.b - however not all my nodes which are configured for A.a will also have B.b - but when I include B in A (or vice versa) it pulls them in - so in other words is there a way to make A.a require B.b while still having some nodes only get configured with A.a or B.b (but if they are configured with both, then B.b should happen before A.a)
02:19 aurynn nitay: sounds like you need a custom state that gets added to [A.a & B.b] nodes
02:19 nitay aurynn: not sure i understand, got an example or some docs?

04:04 jY delinquentme: it depends on how many items are in state files
04:15 delinquentme jY, would it be smart then to generate it from the length of the state files?
04:17 jY delinquentme: its really the number of items in state files and if you use a lot of templates.. etc
04:17 jY a lot of factors.. so there is no set number
04:17 delinquentme jY, is 10000 too many?
04:17 delinquentme Im sitting at 100 ... was previously at 40
04:18 jY again depends on complexity you have
04:18 jY i can't answer that
04:18 delinquentme Whats the disadvantage of just setting it to 100,000 ?
04:18 jY same disadvantage of going from 1000k requests per second to 100k
04:18 jY err 1k to 100k

07:24 gundy I have it in the minion config and it looks like it's loading, but throwing some errors.
07:25 gundy This issue is pretty interesting...   https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/9494
07:25 gundy Leaves a bit to guessing.

08:06 gope Hi, is there any good documentation about managing desktops with salt? I need to manage osx, windows and linux desktops. I have performed some basic tests with linux and windows with some sucess, but osx seems to be a problem

08:41 gundy I guess I got the ext_pillar loading from the minion's config. So, there's that.
08:43 gope quist: I need more info, I can't invest work hours on this and wasting all my free time in side projects is burning me out
08:44 gope quist: So I guess what I need is real case studies, see how other people are doing it
08:44 gope quist: for what I have seen OSX is going to be a problem, no client so I have to use ssh, right?
08:46 gope quist: correction all my free time on side
08:46 quist gope: Oh, you can setup a minion on MacOS, by using brew or macports to install it.
08:48 quist gope: Here is the official documentation, it is a little sparse though: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/installation/osx.html

12:55 babilen iamtew: The salt formula does not provide a "salt" state, but only those that are listed on https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/salt-formula (i.e. salt.minion, salt.master, ...)
12:56 babilen You therefore want to change line 44 from "- salt" to "- salt.master"
12:57 iamtew ok
12:57 iamtew what's the best to apply this? state.highstate or do "salt-call state.sls salt.master"?
12:59 iamtew I did a state.highstate and it took it
12:59 iamtew babilen: thank you, it seems like it works :)
13:01 babilen iamtew: Great! Always check which states a formula actually provides :)
13:02 iamtew yeah, I was sure I was doing something very obviously wrong, but I just haven't had enough time working with these things to see it :D
13:05 iamtew so would it make sense to look at it this way: states (and formulas) provide the actual changes needed, and pillars are used to populate the unique data for those changes?
