05:56 crocket Salt is ok in overall design.
05:56 crocket However, it needs to fix a lot of bugs.
05:57 racooper so how many have you contributed to fixing?
05:57 racooper or reporting?
05:59 crocket racooper, several so far?
06:00 crocket racooper, I helped saltstack employees diagnose issues.
06:00 racooper cool :)
06:01 crocket Maybe, python is the reason that it has a lot of bugs.
06:01 crocket Or ZMQ

09:10 nkuttler crocket: you know what an rc is, right?
09:11 crocket nkuttler, I don't know how stable RC is yet
09:11 tf198_ joined #salt
09:12 nkuttler not stable enough to be released, apparently
09:12 nkuttler but more testers is a good thing

09:13 crocket nkuttler, I need to try a newer version because of https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/17066#issuecomment-61333034
09:14 nkuttler well, at least wait for an answer
09:15 nkuttler personally, i don't like to upgrade because of bugs, i'd rather backport a fix if necessary
09:18 crocket nkuttler, Do you work in saltstack?
09:20 ramishra joined #salt
09:20 crocket nkuttler, I don't have power to backport a fix.
09:24 babilen You can do whatever you want locally
09:24 crocket babilen, Have you used v2014.7rc?
09:25 crocket Anyone?
09:26 babilen crocket: Just try it, it is obviously "almost ready". I can't use RCs in my infrastructure and have not tried it, but am waiting for the release (which is imminent)

09:31 babilen 13 (they won't release on Saturday)
09:45 crocket Thirteen!!
09:56 crocket babilen, I guess it's already fairly satble.
09:56 crocket stable

11:07 arnoldB Anybody interested in systems monitoring based on Salt? Looking for comments for a new project: https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=de#!topic/salt-users/AEKmx7unCQg
11:07 arnoldB s/Anybody/Anyone/ :)
11:09 viq arnoldB: which of two disparate meanings of "monitoring" do you have in mind? ;)
11:10 viq arnoldB: also, I assume you've seen (now dead) https://github.com/lincolnloop/salmon ?
11:11 arnoldB viq: well, at first I'm going to build a replacement for nagios which is used for system/ host and basic application monitoring
11:12 viq Ah, the "yell" kind of monitoring. Any plans for "graphs" kind of monitoring?
11:12 nkuttler heh. who doesn't want to replace nagios..
11:16 arnoldB viq: I had a look at salmon. Forking might be an option. the idea is to use elasticsearch to store Salt raw *metrics*. you can do graphing with tools reading from elasticsearch, graphite, rrd or any other. the part of elija to provide the interface between the results of the execution modules and everything that helps you using/ reading the alerts.
11:17 bhosmer joined #salt
11:18 arnoldB there are already great graphing tools like kibana, grafana, etc.

19:27 Leonw Hi... how bad it would be to open a Salt-Master on the internet?
19:28 pdayton joined #salt
19:31 CeBe1 joined #salt
19:31 Gareth Leonw: everything salt does it over encrypted channels, all interaction is through key exchanges, that being said there is always risk putting *anything* on the Internet.  Why not restrict it certain hosts?  or groups of hosts?
19:32 to_json joined #salt
19:34 Leonw Gareth: Yes.. I will restrict. But I want to manage some hosts that uses dynamic IP... So I would need to open the ports on the net
19:35 Leonw Gareth: but will use the salt-key to do the auth on the hosts...
19:35 Leonw Gareth: the question is if this ports would survive random network attacks without exposing my data :P
19:39 dude051 joined #salt
19:40 rojem joined #salt
19:41 Gareth Leonw: because everything is targetted and doesn't get targetted until you sign the keys on the master, it should be relatively safe.
