00:45 gladiatr hrm... anyone know the magic words to cast a char to an int within a jinja template?
00:46 gladiatr or rather, str -> int
00:47 aurynn inside the jinja blocks should be reasonably straight python
00:47 aurynn so just int(the_str)
00:48 gladiatr you'd think, wouldn't you?
00:48 gladiatr heh
00:48 aurynn hm
00:48 aurynn it's not?
00:48 gladiatr of course I found it a moment ago
00:49 gladiatr given some_text_numbers = "100"; {% if some_text_numbers|int < 101 %}
00:49 gladiatr because Jinja
00:50 gladiatr and Jinja was made for newspaper layout people.
00:50 aurynn jinja takesm ost of its syntax from django templates, which was made for newspaper layout people
00:50 aurynn try the mako templates for a more pure python approach
00:51 aurynn she says, reaching way back into old memories of these things
00:51 gladiatr aurynn, actually, you are so correct, I think it started out as a bonafied fork of django's template system
00:52 aurynn it's mostly random esoterica. :)
00:52 gladiatr aurynn, I would consider shifting to Mako except that would require retraining my (hominid) minions
00:53 gladiatr aurynn, such esoterica is useful in sometimes useful, though, when it comes to warding off irrational urges to go back in time and punch an Original Inventor in the nuts.
00:53 gladiatr man.  I can't type.
00:53 aurynn hehe
00:53 aurynn past-me has made some pretty egregious mistakes
00:54 aurynn Like every time I thought "It's better to write SQL directly than use SQLAlchemy"
00:54 gladiatr so say we al
00:54 gladiatr l
00:55 gladiatr heh. Yeah. Experience leads to wisdom, right? if I encounter someone else's Wisdom and it makes no sense, of course, the originator better be sitting on an easily accessible rock waiting for my questions because the Interwebs was made to serve only me, right?
00:56 gladiatr so many little details
00:56 aurynn yes
00:56 aurynn At least nowadays I can read the code and figure it out
00:57 aurynn and then writhe in guilt for not submitting doc PRs

10:57 keyser ok - I have a database server db1, and I have an entry in the pillar top.sls for it: db1: - oracle . That is fine - it pulls in all the pillar info from the oracle.sls pillar file. Which has a number of different database/passwords etc. How do I get the pillar top file just to reference a section of the oracle.sls rather than the whole thing?

11:14 goal Hi, I'm trying to establish how best to go about second level matching in a map.jinja. Eg. to match on the os_family and then also on osmajorrelease. Struggling to find any examples/advise in the docs or elsewhere. Can anyone advise?

12:51 johtso_ is it possible to have a state that gets run before and after everything else happens, even when deploying to multiple minions? (i.e. should only run once, not once on each minion)

12:56 sieve Hi, I am trying to get salt working on Centos7 but Im a bit stick
12:56 sieve er stuck
12:56 sieve Salt master is not seeing the minions in salt-key although the salt-minions are not reporting a problem contacting the master
12:57 ze- johtso_: not really per se. But, you could have a runner that does what you want.
12:57 ze- johtso_: get a runner to call what's needed to start your maintenance, call the main stuffs, and call what's needed to close the window
12:58 ze- but you'd have to implement that yourself, or use orchestrate if it's easy enough
12:58 johtso_ hmm, I'll have a look at that
12:58 ze- johtso_: what you'd have to do would always be the same, or often change ?
12:58 johtso_ probably would make more sense to create separate maintenance windows for each minion and close them specifically though
12:58 iwishiwerearobot joined #salt
12:59 ze- johtso_: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/states_pt5.html# (orchestration)
13:00 ze- johtso_: if you might have to do different stuffs on different servers, in a specific order, orchestration might be a nice way to write it, and be sure it runs on the proper order :)
13:00 johtso_ yeah, been meaning to have a look into that too, looks useful
13:01 zamuz sorry for the basic question; what would be the best way to implement a state(s) that copies python scripts and then executes one of them my internet is really acting up and manuals take ages to load

14:47 eject_ck how can I see list of all minions on hostA?
14:48 eject_ck as salt-key -L is not what I need as I see

14:52 viq sieve: grep -R /srv/salt docker
14:52 viq Or was it the other way around?
14:52 _JZ_ joined #salt
14:52 murrdoc docker is probably the name of the docker state
14:52 toplessninja Is there still a problem with order or something else regarding the pillar top.sls file?
14:52 toplessninja It doesn't seem to pick up certain things.
14:53 viq murrdoc: of course that breaks if you have them in different networks, and from each of them the relevant master is just seen as 'salt'
14:53 murrdoc yup
14:53 hcl2 sieve, did you download the saltstack docker-formula repo?  that also defines a top level state docker: service.running
14:54 sieve hcl2:  viq: No, I am tired and stupid
14:54 sieve thanks
14:56 sieve How do I use salt.states.dockerio.installed() in the top file?
14:56 viq sieve: you don't
14:57 sieve viq, then how should I be describing my docker config for my minions?
14:57 viq sieve: you don't "use" anything in the top file, you assign states you wrote. And that function you could use in a state
14:57 sieve viq: please could I have an example. I am stuggling to wrap my head around this
14:57 viq sieve: by using it in a state, and then assigning that state in top.sls (or using the state directly)
14:58 viq sieve: https://github.com/viq/cm-lab-salt/tree/master/salt/roots/salt
14:58 goal If I want to copy a file and then patch it, how can I do this under the same ID? eg.. http://paste2.org/5jV7PtaL
14:58 viq goal: you can't
14:59 sieve viq: ok, how should I use salt.states.dockerio.installed() in a statefile? I cant find a yaml example
14:59 hcl2 sieve: i find it easier to develop and test states with no master and no minion, but just using salt-ssh between VMs and using salt-ssh '*' state.sls my/state/file
14:59 goal viq: what would be the correct way to do that?
15:00 viq sieve: probably because you're looking at modules, not states. Try http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.dockerio.html
15:00 viq goal: two separate states.
15:00 sieve viq: there we go! Thanks very much!

15:04 sieve Im not sure what to make of this error. Google is not so helpful. "State 'docker.installed' found in SLS 'native' is unavailable"
15:04 viq goal: also be aware, that if you require: -pkg: patch you have to define a state called patch that makse sure that patch is installed. Salt doesn't magically know you mean to have patch installed by what you wrote there

15:05 viq sieve: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.dockerio.html look at the top for requirements. Are they fulfilled?

15:06 hcl2 has anyone used file.blockreplace successfully?  I can't seem to make it do what i want when I find a use for it - which is changing IPs in a riak config file
15:07 RainbowFactory I get the following error when running "salt-call jobs.active" from the saltmaster. There should be a single job running, and it was initiated with the "salt-call" on the minion. If it's relevant, the job should be a highstate http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=nbdjiBVC
15:07 hcl2 marker_start and marker_end are things that *you* supply for repeated updates?  or are they unique areas of an existing file?

19:30 khaije1 I'd like to admin my vCenter/ESXi setup using salt ... is this possible?
19:30 UtahDave joined #salt
19:31 khaije1 i've been reading the info here: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/clouds/all/salt.cloud.clouds.vsphere.html ... but am a bit uncertain how to proceed since existing tutorials dont seem to encompass this config

19:58 oeuftete_ Do I understand right that I can query a nested grain with "grains.get foo:bar" but there's no corresponding way to use setval to only set foo:bar (but not foo:quux, say)?
19:58 glyf joined #salt
19:59 iggy oeuftete_: correct
19:59 cleme1mp_ joined #salt
19:59 Ahlee where does quux come from? as you can sertainly set grains.setval foo bar
20:00 Ahlee or grains.setval foo quux, or setval foo [bar, quux]
20:00 oeuftete_ iggy: thanks.  So if there's some sort of configuration value that I may want to change periodically on a running server, I should put it in something top-level.  Or maybe there's a better best practice.
20:01 iggy without more info, would mine work for that?
20:01 oeuftete_ Ahlee: the overall structure is more like foo: { bar: [1, 2, 3], quux: "string", baz: ['a', 'b', 'c'], ... }
20:02 Ahlee oh.  Yeah, setval is destructive.
20:02 Ahlee We started by keeping those values top level grains, and have sense moved them to external pillars

20:02 iggy I always say it's better to describe what you're trying to achieve rather than how you're trying to achieve it

23:53 linhm google has not returned any useful results regarding this...
