01:22 catpig hi, i'm having a problem with jinja. i am trying to set a value in the sls file to be used in a salt-managed file: http://pastebin.com/XRFc7wpv
01:22 catpig in the file i then have: master: {{ master }}
01:22 catpig however, trying to run it leads to "SaltRenderError: Jinja variable 'master' is undefined". this is on salt-2014.7.0
01:24 catpig oh dear, never mind. i was putting the value in the wrong state *facewall*

02:20 jeddi I'm getting one of those utf8/unicode problems on one of my salt files - how do I track down which file is causing me grief?   I've got a copy of the traceback here:  http://rn0.me/show/OkT9ZmBbycuunWc3SHTV/   The '0xa5' byte reference is the Yen symbol, which I've grepped for and don't appear to have anywhere.   Is there a way to track which file is causing this to choke?
02:31 joehh1 whiteinge: so a hard dependency on salt-master then

04:06 franky Hi, I installed and configured Salt-master and salt-minion.... and I am not able to do the test.ping, I modify the configuration file I added the salt-master ipaddress
04:07 franky I did accepted the key with salt-key -A
04:08 jnials joined #salt
04:08 jeddi aha - it may be related to systemd recently appearing on the minion.  marvellous.
04:11 franky jeddi could you please elaborate a little bid mode.

04:31 jeddi franky: just did an upgrade on one of my boxes - noticed afterwards it's now running systemd (dist-upgrade on debian from wheezy to sid).  sigh.  i'd been successfullya voiding systemd for a rainy weekend.  anyway - paste    http://rn0.me/show/OkT9ZmBbycuunWc3SHTV/  suggests there's perhaps a character somewhere it doesn't like.
04:31 sinh joined #salt
04:32 jeddi but i've searched for that hex char, without success.  just resolved fail2ban not starting - it needed a systemd adjustment to one of its configs, as it looks for specific log files that don't exist.  just researching various systemd related bugs on the saltstack github issues pages now.  Fun times bythe looks of it.
04:33 jeddi franky: oh - you're asking about what you thought was my respons to your problem, rather than my follow-up to my earlier plea for help :)
04:36 franky got it
04:38 franky jeddi I do not know what is the problem... I check the master and minion config file and I do not see any problem
04:39 franky If I user salt -v '*' test.ping zsh
04:39 franky I get

19:40 brianfeister Hey everyone, apologies - total n00b to Saltstack here.  I've got a working salt recipe and I'm trying to add xdebug to it.  I've got the following and it's not working (https://gist.github.com/brianfeister/2fb742031d59ed6a8ae3). Where exactly can I find the list of valid packages to verify I'm using the right one?
19:42 aquinas_ joined #salt
19:50 CeBe1 joined #salt
19:50 eliasp brianfeister: you could shorten this SLS drastically by using a single pkg.installed state listing all the individual packages in 'pkgs': http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.pkg.html#salt.states.pkg.installed
19:50 jpeterss joined #salt
19:50 eliasp brianfeister: and there you could simply add 'xdebug' to it…
19:51 eliasp brianfeister: also: "it's not working" is nothing we can help you with… you need to provide details like your salt version, an error message etc.
19:51 eliasp brianfeister: and BTW: what you're doing in line 75 is really dangerous… executing arbitrary code as root in your infrastructure
19:51 eliasp never do this!
19:52 brianfeister The error for installing php5-xdebug has no information, it simply says "The following packages failed to install/update: php5-xdebug"
19:52 brianfeister I would have provided more detail if I had any
19:52 eliasp brianfeister: are you applying the state locally/masterless or through a master as highstate?
19:53 ajolo_ joined #salt
19:53 brianfeister The syntactical change you're suggesting - is the current state indicative of an older version of Salt?
19:53 brianfeister Because the recipe is older now, maybe 12 months
19:53 brianfeister called via hightstate
19:53 eliasp I think 'pkgs' was introduced in 2014.1, so this state could be from 0.17.5 times …
19:54 brianfeister sure, that was my thought
19:55 eliasp brianfeister: ok, to get more details, either increase the log-level on the minion… or to just debug it, you can go another way:
19:55 eliasp salt your-minion cmd.run 'salt-call --local -l debug state.sls php_fpm'
19:56 eliasp this should return you the debug output of the php_fpm state being applied on the minion
19:56 eliasp you might need to adapt the name of php_fpm if it's inside a subdirectory or so to web.php_fpm or whatever your state structure is
19:56 brianfeister thank you - doing that now
19:57 potens joined #salt
19:59 agend joined #salt
20:03 brianfeister "Function /srv/www/config/salt/php_fpm.sls is not available" (I've verified that this is the correct path to the sls statefile
20:04 brianfeister The exact command run was "sudo salt-call --local -l debug /srv/www/config/salt/php_fpm.sls php_fpm"
20:05 eliasp brianfeister: then the exact command should be:
20:05 eliasp sudo salt-call --local -l debug state.sls php_fpm
20:05 eliasp state.sls is an execution module…
20:06 eliasp just like pkg.install, cmd.run or something else
20:06 brianfeister ah, thank you - apologies
20:06 eliasp to be more precise… 'state' is the execution module, 'sls' the function provided by it ;)
20:06 brianfeister that makes more sense
20:08 brianfeister Ah, so I'm getting "WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! php5-xdebug"

20:31 Frank_I I am getting  Minion did not return
20:33 Frank_I I do not know what is the problem..and I cannot find documentation..
20:35 eliasp Frank_I: well, this means that one of your Minions didn't respond to test.ping because it isn't running/reacting… you need to check directly on the minion what's wrong with it
20:35 eliasp Frank_I: see also "salt-run manage.status" to see which minions are up/down
20:40 Frank_I I found the problem!

20:56 Frank_I ok for some reason everytime that I restart the master service and I do the ping it doesn't work until I restart the minion service

21:00 Frank_I 2014.1.7
21:01 eliasp Frank_I: yeah, this one is definitely affected… at least upgrade to the lastest 2014.1.x release or go straight to 2014.7.0
