07:52 meylor I'm learning to use Salt with Fabric; I'm printing within the fabric script and I'd also like to catch the stdout of the commands that run, but when I run the command via salt my stdout is {} None. Any pointers as to what I'm missing?

15:05 vincent_vdk Hi,i'm new to Salt and was wondering i you can run salt-ssh without a master running to do state runs

15:06 giannello vincent_vdk, use salt-call
15:07 vincent_vdk giannello: hi, i would like to manage some systems from my laptop
15:08 vincent_vdk i must admit i'm an Ansible user
15:08 vincent_vdk so i'm looking to see if I can use it in a similar way with salt-ssh
15:08 vincent_vdk for smaller personal projects
15:08 giannello uhm
15:10 giannello you can use salt-ssh, and manually define a roster (the name->ip mapping of all the hosts you want to manage)
15:10 vincent_vdk yes, i've that running
15:10 giannello with that you don't need salt-master running
15:11 vincent_vdk but if you want to write a state file (or formula?) can I place these files somewhere?
15:11 vincent_vdk the docs are not completely clear on that
15:11 giannello http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/ssh/ paragraph 2.3
15:12 giannello "The standard Salt States walkthroughs function by simply replacing salt commands with salt-ssh."
15:13 vincent_vdk yes, but that implies you have a master running. Or am I wrong?
15:13 giannello nope
15:14 vincent_vdk so i just create a folder which contains the sls files etc..?
15:15 giannello yes
15:15 vincent_vdk hmm
15:15 vincent_vdk sounds interesting
15:15 vincent_vdk i need to read more docs though

17:51 amustafa_ Looking for some advice on  ubuntu environment variables. I'm adding a file to /etc/profile.d/  to add a custom environment variable. Is restarting the machine the best way to make sure a processes has that variable? Would restarting the process also work? Or is there a better way to do it with salt? There is a daemon service that requires it.
18:06 Setsuna666 joined #salt
18:10 vincent_vdk giannello: got it working
18:10 vincent_vdk thx!
18:13 wolog joined #salt
18:13 giannello vincent_vdk, nevermind
18:14 giannello amustafa_, add the variable to the init script of the daemon process
18:14 giannello or to any file sourced by that init script
18:14 giannello (usually /etc/default/[whatever])

23:09 freimer Sorry about that.
23:09 freimer Mine, the salt mine module.  I get all of the data from the minions, and can list it via the command line, but the jinga template to render a file listing all of the info produces a blank file.
