12:42 vincent_vdk hi, i was wondering if you can delegate things to other minions
12:43 vincent_vdk like update a loadbalancer before taking the backend machine out of rotation
12:43 vincent_vdk and put it back when updated

12:45 jY vincent_vdk: you can if you order things like reactions correctly

12:47 jY well i've never used salt-ssh but i know you can do it via salt-master and the message bus

15:03 iggy I usually start by disabling parts of the config/states/etc

15:05 Deevolution It's not so much that they're broken as I have minions that think they have no states applied.

17:49 phblj Hey all.  I'm trying to provision servers that require a unique integer id in a config file.  My current plan is to add an execution function that calls out to a service that just returns and increments an id, then including it in a jinja template as {{ salt.my_function() }}.  Is there a better way to do this?
17:50 phblj Can I, for instance, just increment a number in a pillar rather than involving an external service?
17:50 iggy you could use ext_pillar, but that's not much different than what you're talking about doing
17:51 iggy I'm assuming this is for something like mysql server_id?
17:51 Gareth morning morning
17:52 phblj yeah, it's a kafka broker_id
17:52 phblj I don't mind my approach-- I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a "unique id" builtin module I was missing.
17:53 iggy if you were tagging your servers to provide the targeting, you could use something like {{ salt['mine.get']('tags:whatever', 'network.get_hostname', 'grain')|count + 1 }}
17:53 mpanetta Whats wrong with a UUID?
17:53 iggy I've never seen anything to do it, seems like it wouldn't be a bad addition though (this question comes up often enough)
17:54 iggy well, at least for the mysql server_id case, it wants an int
17:54 phblj @mpanetta I believe it has to be an int.
17:54 mpanetta Ah
17:55 jY you can make a uuid be a long
17:55 jY but not sure if there's a limit in kafka to the id size
17:55 jY i generally just sum up the octets in the ip
17:56 iggy in mysql it's 4294967295
17:56 iggy but I think it scales certain other things based on that number, so it's best to not use arbitrarily large (or non-sequential) int's
17:57 jY right
17:58 phblj thanks, all.  I'll give this a shot

18:26 AubreyF This is weird. Hard vm restart "sudo reboot now" does not seem to apply minion file changes, but vagrant reload does.
18:26 AubreyF Context: I'm attempting to use gitfs in a masterless configuration. This involves adding a few lines to my /srv/salt/minion file. Here's the resulting file: http://hastebin.com/cuvocuceva.avrasm
18:26 AubreyF With the Gitfs lines in place, I see an error about "No Top file or external nodes data matches found" when attempting to run the highstate. This error is "sticky". Changes to the highstate (either adding or removing the gitfs lines) have no effect until I vagrant reload the vm.
18:27 AubreyF Perfectly happy to continue troubleshooting the gitfs configuration myself, but the config "stickyness" is confusing and I'd love to get an explanation as to what may be going on behind the scenes
18:30 bhosmer joined #salt
18:34 murrdoc aubrey my bad, i meant refresh_modules
18:34 AubreyF After spelling things out, this is clearly a vagrant issue and not a salt issue. Automated provisioner clearly isn't reading the minion file from where I expected it to be (and am thus updating it at).
18:34 AubreyF Thx Murrdoc, Will hopefully report success in the next couple minutes

19:44 whiteinge delinquentme_: the idea behind the Contributors team is everyone wiling to sling code has access but nobody can do any destructive operations. all actions are public.
19:45 delinquentme_ whiteinge, so I cant rewrite history on a project if im a contributor?
19:46 delinquentme_ also I just committed this guy: https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/graphite-formula/commit/b03a70f957323262f98eb212d72a321848693827
19:46 whiteinge right. neither can owners. force-push has been disabled organization-wide
19:46 murrdoc that graphite formula only works with diamond
19:46 delinquentme_ i think the last time im going to merge something by using the github interface -- added in additional data into the commit message quietly

19:58 stevednd when using salt cloud to create and provision from a provider such as linode is it possible to set it up so that salt is automatically deployed to the machine to track a git branch?

20:01 aboe normaly on a redhat system crond launches logrotate
20:02 nicksloan I have a directory which contains some unknown set of subdirectories, each of which contains a pillar sls file. Can I use a wildcard in pillar roots, or some other dynamic approach, or should I be thinking about this problem in a different way altogether
20:02 iggy aboe: what's with https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/logrotate-formula/blob/master/logrotate/init.sls#L5 (|json)
20:03 aboe iggy, the json part you mean, this will only tell salt to parse the jinja variable as json
20:03 iggy it's just a simple string though
20:04 aboe iggy, I know but my salt-formula template that I used had it, and it worked so I didn't remove it
20:04 aboe iggy, I  can clean it up, if you want
20:04 whiteinge it's a nice way to dump a variable into the sls file without having to worry about escaping and quoting issues.
20:05 iggy I don't care either way... it just jumped out at me as I was looking through it
20:06 aboe iggy, no problem, the formula can be further enhanced with more parameters and some jinja love, but  this is simple enough for my needs

22:15 iggy {% set meta_args = '{},{}'.format(minion_fqdn, update_grains) %}
22:15 iggy they shouldn't be kwargs I don't think

22:25 twellspring Trying to use salt cloud module but can not get it to work.  The examples  salt '*' cloud.action start instance=myinstance
22:25 twellspring would run the start action on every one of my minions.
22:26 twellspring but specifying salt master_server_name start instance=myinstance    does not work.
22:26 twellspring am I mis-interpreting how to use this module?

22:30 Ryan_Lane twellspring: I think you're meant to use the salt-cloud command
22:31 Ryan_Lane or to use state modules, if you're going to use state files
22:31 twellspring Want to put my salt config into a pillar so that I can encrypt the API key.
22:31 Ryan_Lane I think salt-cloud will read from the pillars
22:31 Ryan_Lane I haven't used salt-cloud, that said
22:32 Ryan_Lane if you're using AWS, there's also the boto_* modules (they only support creating instances from autoscale groups, though)
22:32 twellspring in the pillar configuration section for salt-cloud there is a comment:  This is only valid in the cloud module, so also in the cloud state. This does not work with the salt-cloud binary.
22:32 Ryan_Lane ah. I have no clue then :)

22:43 iggy to completely remove a minion, do I have to do anything other than remove it's key?
22:44 murrdoc restart the network
22:44 iggy hack the planet
22:44 iggy looks like that did it (or at least solved the problem I was having of salt sitting around waiting for like 2 minutes after all the minions had already returned)

22:46 meylor using jinja with salt: should having nested loops over nested dictionaries in a pillar be easy to iterate over in salt. I keep running into parsing issues
22:47 iggy maybe not easy, but possible
22:47 iggy really depends what you're trying to achieve
22:48 babilen meylor: You might want to write that in pure Python (#!py as renderer in the first line and then implement run() that returns a suitable dictionary)
22:49 babilen That gives you access to all the Python goodness (e.g. itertools)

22:52 babilen I simply refuse to click on pastebin.com, it is such a bad website
22:52 meylor didn't know that was a thing

22:53 babilen So, that doesn't look too complicated. What piece of code are you having problems with?
22:54 jcockhren meylor: remove the quotes around the numbers
22:54 meylor jcockhren: but removing them makes them integers?
22:54 meylor this was quick

22:56 iggy not sure what you're working with there, but you don't really want to indent your yaml the same as your jinja

22:57 iggy I mean that _could_ be correct, but probably not
