03:00 polliard anyone been able to actually use bdist_rpm on RHEL 6 building from a saltstack clone.  I have gotten it down to the byte generation files being missed because the --record=INSTALLED_FILES is run before hand.  I could of course "force" the build but I assume someone has gotten this to work properly and not as a hack :)

03:29 johnkeates left #salt
03:29 Saltn00b I think I've got it working, but I had to alter the boostrap script to interpret "Raspbian" as "Debian".
03:29 Saltn00b Once I do that, everything seems to install fine.
03:30 Saltn00b I'm wondering if that's the correct approach, or if there's a cleaner way to get it working.

14:54 hackeron hi there, I have a few thousand tiny servers, like 700mhz celeron or even raspberry pi - they are on wan and can be frequently offline (even offline for extended periods of time). I want for them to always be up to date running the latest version of my CCTV software (I guess they need to pull the software periodically?) - would saltstack be a sensible solution for this? (here is a demo of the application: http://monitor.zanview.com)
15:00 hackeron another thing is, a bit worried about the use of 0mq - how gracefully does the saltstack agent handle something like unexpected power failures?

15:20 decci I have saltstack master and minion running in two different nodes. I can see the minion through sudo salt-key -L Accepted Keys: SVM61 Unaccepted Keys: Rejected Keys:
15:20 decci While I run sudo  salt '*' disk.usage Failed to authenticate!  This is most likely because this user is not permitted to execute commands, but there is a small possibility that a disk error occurred (check disk/inode usage).
15:20 decci I have set up alpha as user in master config file while root as user in minion
15:21 decci Is that the issue?
15:21 decci While I run sudo  salt '*' test.ping from master node, nothing gets displayed
15:21 decci Any idea?
15:24 decci Is it because of hostname or DNS entry

15:38 jY is anything running on the port?

15:38 decci jY: sudo netstat -tulpn | grep :4506 tcp        0      0 69.27.168.35:4506           0.0.0.0:*                   LISTEN      17579/python
15:38 jY so its already running
15:39 decci jY: sudo netstat -tulpn | grep :4505 tcp        0      0 69.27.168.35:4505           0.0.0.0:*                   LISTEN      17566/python
15:39 decci jY: I wonder why two ports open
15:39 jY so you have to stop it
15:39 jY and then run it in debug mode
15:39 jY salt-master will use both those ports
15:42 decci jY: I am trying kill the process manually but seems everytime it acquires new process ID
15:42 decci is it expected
15:42 jY its probably upstart/systemd or something checking
15:42 jY service salt-master stop
15:42 jY depends on your distro
15:42 decci jY: I stopped that too
15:43 decci jY: Okay now it stopped
15:44 decci jY: So shall I start salt-master again.

18:16 quickdry21 joined #salt
18:17 whiteinge Grokzen: that's great. Thanks a lot.
18:18 Grokzen the worst part about using salt-api is that if you have something like halite running on a sepeare machine you can't get the session handling done in salt-api integrated with the session handling in a halite like application =(
18:18 Grokzen w/o some custom hacks done to session handling in salt-api
18:21 patrek joined #salt
18:22 whiteinge Yeah. In theory a thing like Halite should be served directly by salt-api to avoid that.
18:22 whiteinge Wasn't in the cards for that project unfortunately.
18:23 whiteinge But all the necessary options are in salt-api for some future project.
18:23 Grokzen i guess

20:49 mikeywaites Anyone know the correct syntax for doing an include with the #!py renderer ?
20:54 chip_ mikeywaites: wouldn't you return the include key with a list for a value, in the dictionary you return from the function?

22:08 hackeron hi there, I have a few thousand tiny servers, like 700mhz celeron or even raspberry pi - they are on wan and can be frequently offline (even offline for extended periods of time). I want for them to always be up to date running the latest version of my CCTV software (I guess they need to pull the software periodically?) - would saltstack be a sensible solution for this? (here is a demo of the application: http://monitor.zanview.com)

22:22 viq hackeron: you can use reactor to push, or configure minions to run a state when they connect to master. Also look at the scheduler
22:23 hackeron viq: I don't think a "push" solution will work as those servers can be intermitently offline

22:24 viq hackeron: that's why reactor, make node run highstate when it connects to master
22:24 hackeron viq: woud the connect to master state work gracefully with an intermittent connection and intermittent power loss?
22:25 viq "oh, hey, a node connected to me, send it a command!"

22:25 viq lost connection? lost power? reconnects? "oh, hey, a node connected to me, send it a command!"
22:26 hackeron viq: that sounds perfect - is there an example of such configuration?
22:27 viq I guess this can be a starting point http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/reactor/index.html#syncing-custom-types-on-minion-start
22:29 hackeron viq: that looks great, thank you! - I'll play around
