01:16 BenMorganIO Hey there, I'm getting started with dev ops and I'm think salt would be a great place to start.

01:29 ryuhei hello.. if i use bootstrap to install salt-master,, how do i upgrade it?
01:30 Nazca__ joined #salt
01:31 whytewolf Raghu_: ping a saltstack employee on here, or send an email to the salt-users mailing list with the details. see the note here http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/development/conventions/formulas.html#writing-formulas
01:31 Raghu_ @whytewolf thanks, I'll do that
01:32 whytewolf ryuhei: iirc the bootstrap installes salt-master through your distros package manegment.
01:32 ryuhei hm it does?
01:32 whytewolf oh pip if it doesn't understand the distro
01:33 ryuhei i m on ubuntu.. so i m sure there's a package
01:33 whytewolf so dpkg -l | grep salt should show it
01:35 ryuhei it doesnt :/  how ever if i search in aptitude it does..
01:35 whytewolf odd, cause on a 12.04 ubuntu i used bootstrap and it does show up in dpkg.
01:36 ryuhei oh.. it's from pip lol.. i just did pip list
01:37 ryuhei i ll try to upgrade from pip.. thanks!

02:59 iggy one would think with ruby background you'd lean more toward chef/puppet
03:00 iggy I mean I figured that's why half of us like salt... because it's not ruby
03:03 whytewolf I must be in the other half that just cares that it acts simpler then chef and puppet

03:23 knot i guess it depends on what you're used to whytewolf
03:23 knot "simpler" is kind of subjective :P
03:24 iggy yeah, our salt setup is definitely more complex than any chef or puppet setup I've worked on in the past
03:25 yomilk joined #salt
03:26 whytewolf okay, simpler point of entry?
03:28 benmorgan I'm using Salt (rubyist here) because I want the best tool for the job.
03:28 benmorgan Training costs are cheaper than SNAFU costs.
03:29 benmorgan What steered me towards salt was its performance. It could perform better than Ansible.
03:30 jdowning joined #salt
03:30 benmorgan I also hear people talk about chef vs puppet and ansible vs salt, but rare to hear a chef vs ansible or puppet vs salt discussion. Why is that?
03:34 whytewolf I have heard the salt vs chef thing a few times. i know the guy that turned me onto salt was bummed cause the company he worked for decided on chef. but now he is fully about the cookboooks

03:35 benmorgan Why would someone move from puppet and onto ansible or salt?
03:35 benmorgan http://ryandlane.com/blog/2014/08/04/moving-away-from-puppet-saltstack-or-ansible/
03:37 whytewolf my guess would be they were using pre puppet 3 but the enterprise version. and instead of being pushed into 3. they decided to move to another platform
03:37 whytewolf but thats just a guess
03:38 kellnola nerndev, yes. always happens.
03:38 kellnola rather disconcerting
03:39 benmorgan "As you may have noticed earlier in this post, we had 10,000 lines of puppet code and reduced that to roughly 1,000 in both Salt and Ansible." That's alarming.

04:06 benmorgan How would I use salt to be able to create, say, 3 servers, 1 for the DB, 2 for the web app, and make everything work together? <-- Loaded question.
04:10 whytewolf 10,000 foot view. have salt install the database server. and the web servers. using a grain called roles. that define what each server is. then mine the ip address of the database server to configure the web application.

07:13 nerndev tcp_keepalive: true on minion, and on the master i have ping_on_reconnect: 1 or something like that

19:25 eliasp juso: please don't spam the channel by pasting in here… anything longer than 2-3 lines should go into a pastebin
19:25 eliasp juso: e.g. refheap.com
19:26 juso eliasp, sorry, didnt now, will do
19:28 juso when run 'salt '*' cp.list_master I get: 'hostname.intra:', and nothing else. 'hostname.intra' is the box where I have master and minion running
19:30 eliasp juso: ok, then most likely something with your file_roots config is not right on the master, please make sure the configuration is correct: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/file_server/file_roots.html

19:38 juso eliasp: thank you, changes /etc/salt/master as in the link you provided (added 'files_root') and now getting a different error: Invalid requisite type 'file.directory' in state 'isc-dhcp-server', in SLS 'hostname'. Requisite types must not contain dots, did you mean 'file'?
19:38 juso will have a look into this now
19:39 eliasp juso: please nopaste your state file … it's most likely a requisite like "- file.directory: something" instead of "- file: something"
19:40 eliasp juso: for requisites, only the state type, but not the state function is defined (e.g. file instead of file.directory, or pkg instead of pkg.installed)

21:43 juso eliasp: thank you very much, all is sorted now, issue was with old salt-minion and missing file_roots in /etc/salt/master. Few other things to sort, like having file.managed in 'required', but that was a small-ish issue
