00:18 vxitch hello hello
00:18 vxitch can i run a salt-master on rhel 6 (python 2.6) and a salt-minion on rhel 7 (python 2.7)?
00:19 otter768 joined #salt
00:19 vxitch it seems logical that it would work, however im getting all sorts of python errors from the minion which googling tells me is because python-requests package is not installed on the minion, yet it is and python 2.7 has no problem importing it
00:19 vxitch master and minion are both at 2014.7.2

00:20 ALLmightySPIFF joined #salt
00:21 vxitch the recurring error is: AttributeError: \'module\' object has no attribute \'get_accumulator_dir\'
00:21 vxitch only some states trigger this
00:22 iggy make sure it's a new enough requests module
00:22 iggy and yes, that should work fine
00:22 Singularo joined #salt
00:23 vxitch how would i make sure it's a new enough requests module? i'm not entirely sure what that means.
00:23 vxitch master has python-requests-1.1.0-4.el6.noarch
00:23 vxitch minion has python-requests-1.1.0-8.el7.noarch
00:23 vxitch same version
00:23 vxitch and the newest available from my RHN
00:24 joehoyle I'm trying to work out where I should put my runners when using a a different backend fileserver
00:24 joehoyle anyone else doing that for their masters?

00:32 iggy vxitch: make sure you don't have any remnants from old salt installs installed either
00:33 vxitch iggy: the rhel7 system is a fresh install. the rhel6 has always had salt on it, gradually upgrading from epel-testing as new versions are released

13:39 phx i mean, it should show the proper states assigned to the minion, including your vmware-uptodate one
13:39 JPT it does, and it looks good to me. it matches all the things i stated in top.sls
13:39 phx right, that's good
13:40 phx nahamu, you messed it up

13:40 paulm-- joined #salt
13:40 JPT :o
13:40 phx JPT, it's $path/$env/$states, and not $path/$states
13:40 phx well, depending on how you configured it in master (the file)
13:41 JPT one second... i need to get my terminology right
13:41 phx the base: is an environment
13:41 phx in case you have multiples, people usually do /srv/salt/(base|dev|prod|stuff)/$states
13:41 JPT ah, okay. my environment is a single one... but i guess i need to name it then?
13:41 phx base is only used for assigning states (including environment)
13:42 phx how did you set it up in master? it might be /etc/salt/master
13:42 phx it's the file_roots directive
13:42 JPT file_roots: base: - /srv/salt
13:42 phx that's all?
13:42 JPT it's properly indented in the file, but that's it.
13:43 phx then the file layout is good, let's go on
13:43 xsteadfastx upgraded my salt-master to 2014.7.1 (the same like the minions) and now i get a "TypeError encountered executing pkg.refresh_db: string indices must be integers, not str. See debug log for more info" anything known about that? or where to look further?
13:44 phx JPT, salt $minion state.sls vmware-uptodate, what does that do?

13:44 phx uhm
13:44 phx JPT, sorry, state.sls $statename
13:45 JPT ah
13:45 phx state.sls is the state module's sls function, and it takes the state's name to execute as an arg
13:45 JPT that results in the type error
13:45 JPT pasting...
13:46 JPT http://pastebin.com/Hqu7saiS
13:47 phx JPT, it says it's looking for the vmware-uptodate.sls, do you have it as an sls, or as a /init.sls ?

13:48 phx which version of salt is that?
13:48 JPT salt 2014.7.1 (Helium)
13:48 JPT latest on debian wheezy

18:49 chamill hal58th1: Hmm, that's odd.
18:49 hal58th1 Why do you think that?
18:50 * SheetiS thought the pillar was rendered on the master.  Take the gpg renderer for example, I don't have my gpg keys on all minions but the pillar data is decrypted successfully always.
18:51 chamill Well, I have a state which uses a custom module, which in turn requires a certain python module installed. When I run salt.show_sls on the minion, it errors because it can't find a function, as I expect. On the master, however, it renders correctly. The python module in question is installed on the master, but not the minion
18:52 masterkorp Guys anyone used the users-formula ?
18:52 SheetiS chamill: I'd make sure the python module is installed as a requisite state on any minion that will utilize said module.

18:55 babilen https://www.refheap.com/97783
18:55 masterkorp oh do i need to keep indentation ?
18:55 babilen masterkorp: You naturally want to fix the additional space character in the example, but that's the idea
18:56 SheetiS yeah you need to keep the indention
18:56 babilen Yes, you need *exactly* two spaces
18:56 babilen That isn't in the YAML spec, but the parser module used by salt expects it that way

21:14 iggy because the formula is stupid and instead of a install_hbaconf: True setting it has a path_to_hbaconf: salt://some/path.conf
21:14 babilen iggy: Oh, is that formula doing what it looks like it is doing?
21:14 nitti joined #salt
21:15 fxhp thinking about trying to slurp in a huge directory of ansible vars files as pillar vars
21:15 scoates_ joined #salt
21:15 fxhp only think that seems to be in my way is file extension
21:15 babilen That is insanely stupid - it looked as if it would allow users to override a standard source salt:// parameter in  style, but that ... is just
21:15 iggy so anyone who has set it up at this point is going to have path_to_hbaconf: salt://current/path.conf and the file will no longer be there
21:15 babilen iggy: Sure, totally see your point in that case
21:16 babilen (why on earth would one do it that way and not keep the source in map.jinja? I mean I am all for easy ways to override file templates, but not like that)
21:17 iggy it's not the end of the world to change it, but it seems like that guy is just trying to change stuff for no reason (his other changes have either been reverted for being broken or pointless)

21:18 ponpanderer anyone using salt-cloud to provision windows instances? seems there's a problem with the winexe syntax when connecting as a local admin. with winexe 1.0 the result is NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE and the salt-cloud bootstrap stalls there in a loop before eventually giving up
21:19 ponpanderer using smbclient connecting is no problem, the issue is only with winexe. seems from various forums the issue is with no domain being specified. the target OS in this case is Win 2012 R2

22:09 LtLefse I'm looking for docs on Orchestrate and it seems all roads lead to http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/states_pt5.html#orchestrate-runner
22:09 LtLefse is there something more detailed I'm missing?
22:10 hal58th1 Unfortunately a lot of the docs aren't super detailed. Feel free to update them :)
22:10 LtLefse specifically I'm looking for all the details on tgt and tgt_type
22:11 LtLefse I'd like to target by node group
22:12 baweaver https://gist.github.com/baweaver/127c604201a932c45419 - Anyone seen this when trying to execute a lowstate from a client?

22:14 iggy LtLefse: tgt_type takes the same args as match in the top file
22:14 iggy (or should anyway)
22:14 hal58th1 - tgt: 'prodapp'
22:14 hal58th1 - tgt_type: nodegroup
22:14 LtLefse iggy: thanks!

22:33 vxitch iptables:\n  service.running:\n    -enable: True
22:34 vxitch the above fails on el7 systems
22:34 vxitch claiming the iptables service does not exist
22:34 vxitch I can execute 'service iptables status' just fine from that host, though
22:34 vxitch also does salt automatically use systemd when available?

22:36 jY vxitch: run it in debug and see what commands it's using
22:36 vxitch jY: alright, thank you
22:37 vxitch also salt-master times out a lot on my master VM
22:37 vxitch and it eats cpu time
22:37 vxitch it's a very small vm simply because im working with basement resources. this will change soon. but for curiosity, what is everyone else running salt-master on?
22:38 vxitch my vm is 1 cpu 500 mb ram, rhel 6 64 bit
22:38 jY i ran master find on a 1cpu 1gig ram
22:38 jY but it wasn't doing a ton of states
22:38 __number5__ vxitch: give your master more resources than those for minions
22:39 vxitch i dont have an awful lot of states, around 75 per minion, with 6 minions. i run highstate on one minion at a time. if i run highstate across them all (or do a yum update salt-master) load jumps to 200+ and stays there for about half an hour

22:39 vxitch __number5__: yes I know :) but this is all I have to work with at the moment
22:42 jaloren In my custom execution module, i am using the salt.modules.cp.get_dir function. I am tyring to add some fault handling. As far as I can tell, if it succeeds it returns a populated list. If it fails, it returns an empty list. I am basically thinking about doing a simply truth test and throwing an exception if the list is false (i.e. empty)
22:42 jaloren is there a cleaner way to do this?
22:45 iggy vxitch: --batch=1
22:47 vxitch iggy: magic. thanks! any way to apply that limit to whatever salt does during a master update?
