00:43 jonher937 george: You could test "test.ping"
00:43 george meaning if the minion is up or down?

01:25 kalessin When using salt-ssh the master insist in sending shared libraries built for the wrong architecture for my minions, does anyone knows how to fix that?

01:54 johnkeates kalessin: don't know how to fix that, sorry. Did you change Salt versions recently?
01:55 kalessin idk, i have just been upgrading packages, i'm running salt 2014.7.2 right now
01:55 badon joined #salt
01:55 kalessin i just didn't pay attention
01:56 johnkeates how did you find out it was compiled for the wrong arch?
01:57 johnkeates was it a salt error or an OS error
01:57 kalessin because the error bubbles up
01:57 johnkeates because I believe it sends libs for multiple archs and detects arch on runtime on the salt-ssh target
01:57 kalessin anyway I have been able to work-around it by re-generating a thin.tgz manually
01:57 kalessin but now it fails because it doesn't have messagepack
01:58 kalessin this must be a recent change in salt as well, because it used to work and nothing changed on my minion
01:58 johnkeates that last one is a known bug, i saw it fly by on the github issue list

12:30 stefan1 Hello,
12:30 stefan1 I am trying to find solution for the following problem: I have a git repository for my dotfiles (configuration files in my home folder) with two branches: root and stefan. Each has conf files for the respective user.
12:30 stefan1 I am using git2 backend, and I want to use files from the two of the branches in the same environment. So for example, in the base environment, I want to use both root and stefan branch. I could maybe mount them to different mount points. But I don't know how I can do that based on the branch. What options do I have? Thank you

18:54 nkuttler losh: what's your question?
18:56 edrocks joined #salt
18:56 losh I'd like to use salt with OneFS (a proprietary OS by Isilon(EMC) based on FreeBSD) .. I'm using salt-ssh and it works well with managing configuration changes, but I'm unable to manage services because it uses a command "isi services apache restart", which I doubt is supported by salt.
18:57 losh My question is, is OneFS supported and if not, what effort would it take to include such syntax to support the OS?

19:04 jonher937 losh: Without to much programming expertice you should be able to rewrite any of the BSD service modules to support run "isi service ..." instead of just "service ..."
19:04 jonher937 losh: Have a look at the service modules in git: https://github.com/saltstack/salt/tree/develop/salt/modules
19:04 nkuttler losh: i guess you'd have to write a new <os>service module
19:05 nkuttler those looks simple enough. contribute your code if you do
19:06 losh thanks guys I'll do that.
19:06 nkuttler losh: but also ask in the google group i guess

19:40 JoshuaX Good PM gents.
19:40 JoshuaX and ladies.
19:40 JoshuaX I'm trying to use a formula for the first time, I lack understanding.
19:40 JoshuaX The nginx formula lists "pillar.example", and it has a series of examples how to configure it.
19:41 JoshuaX Do I ahve to use this from a pillar? I have the formula in my file_roots for vagrant testing, but I don't understand why it's labeled pillar.example, and I don't understand where I am supposed to configure this.
19:41 JoshuaX I am looking at the docs which I can find, in detail - does anyone else have a recommended explanation for what I am missing here?
19:46 LotR JoshuaX: you copy the pillar.example to /srv/pillar (or the location you configured) as e.g. nginx.sls and you set the variables the way you want
19:47 JoshuaX This seems like magic to me.
19:47 LotR and then edit the pillar's top.sls of course
19:48 LotR maybe you need to read the pillar docs to understand what it does?
19:50 chandy_ joined #salt
19:50 JoshuaX LotR: Thanks, I will start there.
19:51 JoshuaX It was a lot of information on my first pass, clearly I wanted to start "do'ing" to soon.

22:01 vieira Hello, is there any way to return the result of running a command across all minions in a single mail? Using the smtp returner appears to send one e-mail per minion
22:04 pravka joined #salt
22:05 Vynce joined #salt
22:08 eliasp vieira: the problem is: salt doesn't really work this way… running something like 'salt * cmd.run "echo hello world"' results in a unique job per minion… where each job generates it's own returner results
22:09 eliasp vieira: what you could probably do: return to a message-queue/DB instead as returner target and provide per "command run" a unique pillar… then use this pillar to mend the pieces in your DB back together and generate mails based upon this result
22:12 eliasp vieira: if you just need results like "job finished successfully" (and not specific return data generated on the minion), you could also build something based on the orchestrate runner
