00:00 alynpost hrm, even setting '*' is giving me that error.

00:08 alynpost oh oh, ok.  Everything is pointing to version mismatch and it looks like that is the culprit.  I can't explain how I got myself in that situation but testing now.

00:08 alynpost (I must have used a different procedure to install salt-master.)
00:10 jessie_ can anyone help. deploying a server from Digitaloceon, once deployed i then do a manage.status and it shows as down...
00:11 alynpost Ok, I confirm now my problem was version mismatch.  I was very blind to that possibility, though it's obvious now (with only my master minion working.)
00:11 alynpost Thank you me for your help.

00:11 alynpost jessie_ it's pretty quiet in here right now.
00:12 alynpost I've been talking to myself here for about an hour without anyone else chiming in.

00:14 R3I Hi! Quick question: Is it possible that Salt-Api (v2015.2.rc2) wont load configs from master.d/* ? Can someone disprove/confirm this?
00:14 joshin joined #salt
00:15 joshin #monit
00:15 alynpost R3I they probably have to end in *.conf
00:16 R3I alynpost: sure ... sorry this is the fact ... file is under /etc/salt/master.d/salt-api.config ... but no loading
00:17 R3I if i put the content to the master conf-file everything goes fine
00:17 alynpost double check the spelling, they must have the extension .conf not .config.
00:17 R3I oh ok ill try
00:18 R3I oh damn ... sorry for that ... works like a charm
00:18 alynpost \o/
00:18 R3I thx!
00:19 alynpost yw, enjoy using salt!
00:19 jessie_ alynpost: you any experience using salt
00:19 jessie_ saly cloud
00:19 alynpost I've been using it for a week or so; very little.
00:19 jessie_ ahhh
00:20 jessie_ i gone the other way with it... i went the salt-cloud route first
00:20 alynpost but I was successful in bootstrapping a copy of a machine out of our production environment.
00:20 jessie_ sounds sweet dude.
00:20 alynpost ah, I already have servers that are up and running, but it was becoming too difficult to manage them.
00:20 alynpost salt has been a dream, very pleased with it.
00:21 alynpost what is salt-cloud?
00:21 jessie_ salt-cloud basically lets you deploy and manage vm/s services from azure aws and DO
00:21 deares joined #salt
00:21 jessie_ so i can deploy sing api keys and then minion install automatically
00:21 alynpost ohneat, ok.  I have a few AWS machines.  Most of my stuff is running on ESX.
00:22 jessie_ oh my esxi...
00:22 alynpost well, that's why I have an IT department.  :-p
00:22 jessie_ i left a company last week because they where in a vmware env
00:22 jessie_ now am a contractor in liverpool shaping there business in the cloud

00:24 jessie_ with teh company i finished a HA SAN failover mpio with esxi vsphere vcenter with multi host in RDS HA control.
00:24 jessie_ close to doing site to site redundancy... until i got bored
00:24 alynpost I inherited an HA system, though the problem that fell in my lap this week was a system that had no backup and we needed to test it.
00:25 jessie_ veeam is good for vmware
00:25 jessie_ ovh provide veeam as a service :)
00:25 alynpost I've been enjoying working on cloned systems; being able to take them out of rotation, tinker, and stand them back up is neat.
00:25 jessie_ sorry i dont share this sentiment.:) so boring for devops sys admins...
00:26 jessie_ the performance as well is sooo poor with vmware.. even if you have ssd;s in raid 6 array in HA as a target... still slow as even on a local network..
00:27 jessie_ enough trolling on vmware :)
00:27 alynpost yeah we've been doing a boatload of performance tuning to make our product work in VMware; it started 30%+ slower than on bare metal.
00:28 alynpost Good luck with your deployment; having fixed the problem I was having and paid it forward I'm going to focus on my robot army.
00:28 jessie_ good luck dude. lemme know when you get somehwere with it. you may have your first slave :)

21:13 keltim just a question, is it that bad to use simply one environment/one salt root and target environments in the top file and the states themselves, or is there a pitfall to this, other than the obvious goodness of strictly partitioning the envs?
21:14 seev that's how I do it keltim
21:14 keltim one root?
21:14 davet joined #salt
21:14 yidhra joined #salt
21:14 seev if you have a team of 6 people working on salt, maybe you need a promotion/environment layout
21:14 keltim us as well, but we are in the fledgling stages with salt and I really don't want to make any hard to fix cluster f's
21:14 seev but if it's just you, who cares
21:15 keltim seev, we have 3 admins, all of which have difficulty caring about the state tree layout we agreed on :/
21:15 seev then lock the dev state tree into one git repo and don't let them have privilieges to promote
21:16 seev you have to enforce the separation if you want to use it, I think, or it's not worth the hassle
21:16 keltim does anyone else use something like a style guide for sls files and a state tree layout definition?
21:16 seev you can look at the formulas for guidance on best practices
21:17 seev https://github.com/saltstack-formulas
21:17 seev there's also a lot of suggestions in the state documentation on best practices
21:18 keltim seev, how did I miss those? thanks
21:19 seev sure thing keltim, I hope it helps, I have used these myself
