00:02 moloney I am okay with the reactor approach to handling grain dependencies (I already need that to sync the grains).  I am just trying to wrap my head around where to use grains and where to use pillars or modules.  I guess grains should really only be for info that won't change without a reboot?
00:02 iggy not really
00:03 iggy the grains are evaluated frequently
00:03 iggy one thing to consider, grains on a minion can be faked, pillars have the salt-master as a source of truth

00:05 iggy I beat the crap out of these f1-micro's

00:12 litwol hehe
00:12 litwol so far my entire infrastructure has one.. oh the one and only state that i finally trust.
00:12 litwol oh so difficult is it to relinquish manual control to automation.
00:12 litwol it is*
00:15 shadowsun It gets a lot easier when it's going to take you 12 hours to update all the boxes by hand, and 20 minutes to automate it
00:16 iggy ^
00:16 litwol yes
00:16 litwol also
00:16 iggy can anyone say heartbleed?
00:16 shadowsun ^
00:16 litwol i am making an effort to go down the never-upgrade-anything road.
00:16 shadowsun Or shellshocked
00:16 litwol instead... 'always rebuild from scratch'
00:16 shadowsun litwol: You will hate your life
00:17 litwol for example my dev environments are always rebuild from scratch
00:17 shadowsun litwol: "When operating at scale, consistency is key. It doesn't matter if it's done wrong, as long as it's done wrong the same way everywhere.'
00:17 litwol very quick and easy effort using linux containers and cloning
00:17 litwol it gets difficult to update software down the line when compatibilities change.. so screw udpating. just install fresh and import data.
00:18 shadowsun heh.
00:18 litwol actually i realize the end result is the same :). i do end up updating.
00:18 Nazca joined #salt
00:18 shadowsun Yeah I was going to say
00:18 litwol for peace of mind i'm just calling it differently
00:18 litwol cause i'm sick and tired of updating ;)
00:18 litwol lol
00:18 shadowsun I updated from libc5 to libc6
00:18 iggy constant deployment
00:18 litwol i'll go lock myself in the crazyward later
00:18 shadowsun upgrades are easy these days
00:19 iggy there's one thing I hate about updates
00:19 iggy via pkg manager that is
00:19 iggy they all seem to want to restart services
00:19 litwol not on gentoo
00:19 iggy I want to update all my packages during the day and save the service restarts for night time
00:20 iggy yeah, well, I'm not using Gentoo in anything resembling production
00:20 litwol why not fresh install in new VMs/containers.. start them all up. run your environment tests.. then just load balance off previous-live to new-live

15:03 coval3nce hmm i think i may have found a time logic bug with scheduler and cron
15:07 coval3nce there is logic in schedle to check for seconds==1 when using cron, but if you have thing going on in the master loop that doesn’t allow calls to self.handle_schedule in master in a timely matter, then the code in schedule.py that pulls the next iteration of seconds from croniter will jump ahead, and start all over, not allowing the ==1 logic to trigger a run of a job.

15:29 iggy txomon|home: pointer?
15:29 txomon|home iggy, repo if I do one
15:29 txomon|home I am now trying to solve the users - groups - machines - packages deal
15:29 txomon|home and I think I am up to something
15:30 salty_to_the_cor I guess minions do a dns resolution and then start thier process, so i cant change the alias
15:30 salty_to_the_cor any suggesstions anyone?
15:30 iggy salty_to_the_cor: master: can be a list
15:30 txomon|home salty_to_the_cor, just put several masters and they will hope
15:30 txomon|home hop*
15:31 txomon|home read /etc/salt/minion
15:31 txomon|home it has inline comments
15:31 salty_to_the_cor iggy, txomon|home i know that, but i am testing, it somehow my master has some issues and i have to bring a new master up
15:31 coval3nce salty_to_the_cor: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/multimaster.html#configure-minions
15:31 salty_to_the_cor what will i do in that case, say i setup and start a new master
15:32 iggy you can't
15:32 txomon|home xDD
15:32 txomon|home you have to do it before, not after
15:32 coval3nce can you copy over all the keys and cache?
15:32 txomon|home there is all that authz authn thing
15:32 salty_to_the_cor what if the master machine is not functioning, or a disk fails in it
15:32 iggy yes, but the minions won't try to re-connect
15:33 coval3nce chicken and egg trying to add another master after the fact i guess
15:33 salty_to_the_cor ah, yes, so they do a dns resolution once the minion starts up
15:33 VR-Jack anyone have a pointer for python code loading salt to render a jinja file and output the results?
15:34 txomon|home anyway, I was talking about the roles thing. A machine always, for the type it is, defines a set of packages it needs. A set of packages define a set of groups. A machine also needs some users, and those users need to be within the groups
15:34 txomon|home VR-Jack, I do that with test=True and touching the file
15:35 salty_to_the_cor is it possible when a minion gets a request for test.ping etc it does a dns resolution everytime?
15:35 txomon|home and debug=True just in case
15:35 VR-Jack txomon: wanting to test a standalone jinja file. not a state

21:05 salt837 Does anyone here use Vagrant? Do you know how to specify a Salt version to be used, so I can upgrade Salt only deliberately? Say, in a VagrantFile?
21:05 hackel What salt version does Beryllium correspond to?  (Trying unsuccessfully to use file.line with 2014.7.5)

21:06 hackel salt837: You could use salt to manage itself, or e.g. on Debian-based distros: apt-get install salt-master=2014.7.5+ds-1ubuntu1
21:12 salt837 right now I'm just using whatever Salt comes with Vagrant in a masterless configuration, and have not installed it on the host by itself.
21:13 salt837 I'm struggling to find out how to get Vagrant to tell me the version of Salt it's using even.

21:39 salt837 hackel: Ok, I was confused, and hopefully am not anymore. So, vagrant uses http://bootstrap.saltstack.org to grab the latest installer script, which changes every now and then (did 2 days ago). Some recent changes in this caused provisioning to fail, and more recent changes fixed it.
21:40 salt837 So I think what I really want is to peg Vagrant to a specific version of this installer script.
