Time Nick Message
00:01 shadowsun No
00:01 shadowsun You're not doing jinja by default now
00:02 shadowsun Where was this change announced? Is this supposed to be this way?
00:02 solidsnack joined #salt
00:05 iggy shadowsun: definitely not
00:06 baweaver joined #salt
00:06 shadowsun iggy: I'm glad, because this just bit me in production
00:06 iggy I would assume you've got some broken jinja module or something, hard to say without more info
00:07 iggy start cranking up loggin levels and look for anything out of the ordinary
00:07 iggy (probably as simple as salt-call -l debug state.sls somestate)
00:07 shadowsun iggy: The only thing that has changed is the salt-minion version
00:08 shadowsun I manually called an update of only salt-minion from salt-minion 2014.7.5 (Helium) to salt-minion 2015.5.0 (Lithium) and it broke
00:08 shadowsun If I do the execution of the script and add template=jinja to the salt-master command-line, it works
00:08 shadowsun with the new minions
00:08 smcquay joined #salt
00:08 iggy wait, what command are you running?
00:09 shadowsun salt -N class-group cmd.script 'salt://script.py' template=jinja -- '-params'
00:09 iggy ahhh, yeah that wasn't clear from original description
00:09 shadowsun that works. Remove template=jinja and it doesn't expand the jinja includes
00:09 shadowsun sorry, I was in "ohgod" mode, because it just broke production while it's in the middle of being used
00:10 iggy I'm guessing you won't upgrade major versions of salt in production without testing in the future
00:10 shadowsun I didn't upgrade
00:10 shadowsun yum decided it would be a great idea
00:13 iggy yes, the default changed
00:13 iggy why, I don't know
00:13 shadowsun this just hit epel-testing yesterday
00:13 shadowsun as far as my boxes know
00:14 mpanetta joined #salt
00:14 iggy it was tagged 9 days ago, don't know what epel's schedule looks like
00:18 iggy https://github.com/saltstack/salt/commit/ad635235a919dd09bbaa6aa560f1efcc01b35123
00:18 iggy no real explanation of why it changed
00:18 shadowsun yeah
00:21 shadowsun 2015-05-11: salt-minion-2015.5.0-1.el6
00:24 shadowsun So my test box runs a nightly yum update
00:24 shadowsun I got 2014.7.5 on Apr 21
00:24 shadowsun I got 2015.5.0-1 on May 14
00:25 iggy sounds right
00:25 shadowsun My non-test box also got salt 2015.5 on May 14th
00:25 shadowsun so it looks like this completely skipped epel-testing
00:25 * iggy uses Debian... claims ignorance
00:25 shadowsun yeah
00:26 shadowsun I have to use this because other people use this, so meh
00:26 shadowsun I'm trying to figure out how to figure out when a package hit epel, because my entire setup assumes it hits epel-testing and stays there for awhile before being pushed to the stable branch
00:28 shadowsun Yeah.
00:28 shadowsun This rolled from epel-testing to stable in two days
00:31 iggy you'll have to take up your issues with epel-testing with someone else, for your actual Salt issue, I filed https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/23800
00:31 I3olle joined #salt
00:32 primechuck joined #salt
00:32 shadowsun yeah
00:32 iggy I've opened 7 issues today... I'll bet the Salt devs are tired of seeing my name pop up
00:33 shadowsun yeah
00:33 shadowsun I'm subscribed and commented on the bug tyvm
00:34 shadowsun basepi: Looks like you signed off on the move from epel-testing to epel; is the cycle time going to continue to be this fast? If so I'm going to have to exclude salt on my production environment and schedule updates with full QA passes, we're getting bit by too many functionality-breaking changes/bugs
00:35 shadowsun (this hasn't been the only one this month)
00:35 iggy you should do that anyway
00:35 shadowsun iggy: I'm basically a one man show and it's a pretty big time imposition, and I have to convince people to let me pull other people
00:35 shadowsun so it's non-trivial
00:35 shadowsun :|
00:35 iggy same
00:35 iggy but it's what I had to do
00:36 shadowsun Yeah
00:36 iggy we don't actually use packages
00:36 iggy we install from git tags
00:36 shadowsun I have considered that multiple times
00:36 shadowsun since for some reason salt doesn't leave older versions available via pip
00:38 iggy so PC... "I was adversely affected by this change"
00:38 shadowsun Yes
00:39 I3olle joined #salt
00:39 shadowsun I used to do a lot of inbound phone support, sometimes the filter kicks back in when I'm stressing
00:39 iggy I filed the bug for you because I knew if it had been me, I would have been getting out the pitch forks and torches
00:39 shadowsun ^
00:39 shadowsun That's why the filter's currently engaged
00:39 basepi Sorry for the inconvenience shadowsun. We tested the packages internally before voting them forward. Maybe we should let them make their way after two weeks...though I'm unsure of what that will gain you because you still won't have tested them yourself?
00:39 shadowsun basepi: a 2 week cycle is what I'm tuned for
00:40 iggy do you have machines that pull -testing (so you would actually have tested that)?
00:40 shadowsun basepi: i.e. in two weeks I will use the testing boxes multiple times, and anything that breaks us usually gets caught and we can skip a release if we need to
00:40 shadowsun yeah
00:40 shadowsun I've got multiple
00:40 basepi Ok, good feedback. I'll bring it up next release.
00:40 shadowsun basepi: If it's going to be a 2-day cycle, I can change things to adapt to that, but I need to know it's going to continue to get voted forward, basically
00:41 shadowsun Ultimately I am just one user
00:41 iggy base pi is no stranger to pitch forks and torches
00:41 shadowsun I know
00:41 iggy ask him about compound matches ;)
00:41 shadowsun He's also been way helpful on many past occasions
00:41 shadowsun heh
00:41 basepi Maybe we'll take a poll or something. :D
00:41 shadowsun basepi: I'm down for that :D
00:41 * basepi hides from pitchforks
00:41 shadowsun heh
00:42 shadowsun I'll test later tonight and see if this update fixes the bug that has me running salt-master in a screen
00:48 badon_ joined #salt

17:20 iggy well, for salt-call, you don't actually need a minion running (afaik anyway)
17:21 casper_ how do I set the file_roots

19:20 brianj Documentation states that 'salt' command can be run on minions. True? What path is needed to find the command? I see it on my master, but not on the minion.
19:23 bdf_ brianj: try salt-call
19:24 brianj Ok. that is there, /usr/bin/sallt-call
