05:55 k00l is anyone around ?
05:55 hemebond I am.
05:56 k00l hemebond: would salt be any good for doing installs of software (like drupal) as an onboarding agent ? or is it more just for the platform ?
05:56 hemebond For configuring an actual application? I could work.
05:57 hemebond I don't know much about Drupal or what you mean by onboarding.
05:57 k00l ya like mupital installs for diffrent cleints ?
05:57 hemebond Can you explain roughly what the process is?
05:57 hemebond (if done manually(
05:58 k00l well there are really advanced ways of doing it .. but bassically its dependices are a full lamp stack and composer, drush
05:58 k00l but u just unzipp it and point the settings files to the sql db
05:59 hemebond Sounds like Saltstack.
05:59 hemebond (as in, something SaltStack could handle easily)
06:05 asyncsrc joined #salt
06:09 laax joined #salt
06:10 k00l really...
06:10 k00l its weird .. so how can it interface with a db to get a list of clients
06:11 hemebond In what way?
06:11 hemebond It can create db users.
06:11 k00l well if the front end takes a order.. where would salt expect to see the data it would use to build an iterations of a site ??
06:12 hemebond front end takes an order? you skipped that part :-) can you explain further?
06:12 k00l and my guess is that reactors would be the best way to get it to "react" to a order from the front end ?
06:13 k00l like a panel where  a dev can get a site installed atonmosly
06:14 hemebond Well, if your frontend can create/update a YAML file, then it could create a config for a client and then tell Salt to push the changes out.
06:14 hemebond You would need to write states and modules to transform that YAML file into the changes you want to make.
06:14 k00l can other software trigger actions in salt ?
06:14 k00l like can wordpress send comands to the master ?
06:15 hemebond Sure, there are Python modules for integrating.
06:15 hemebond There is also an API.
06:15 hemebond And a webui (saltpad) that uses it.
06:15 k00l can you direct me to the API docs ?
06:16 hemebond https://docs.saltstack.com/en/develop/ref/clients/index.html
06:16 k00l excelent,
06:16 k00l so you would recamond salt for that kida deplayonet ?
06:17 hemebond I would recommend Salt for remote management and automation, yes.
06:17 k00l sorry about the spelling
06:17 hemebond I haven't used those features myself, but it definitely sounds like something Salt could handle.
06:17 k00l kool, thnaks mate
06:17 k00l what do you use it for ?
06:18 hemebond Right now I just use it to manage a remote test environment and some local monitoring servers.
06:18 k00l ahhh

12:01 SunPowered What does the 'ssh-key-names' parameter reference in a salt-cloud provider configuration?
12:02 SunPowered Failed to create VM sunpowered-jenkins. Configuration value 'SunPowered Salt Master' needs to be set
12:02 hemebond SunPowered: Is that the correct parameter name? Where are you seeing it?
12:03 SunPowered I am trying to provision some servers via a map file
12:03 SunPowered salt-cloud -m /path/to/map
12:03 SunPowered https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/cloud/digitalocean.html
12:04 SunPowered end of the first paragraph references a "SSH Keys" section, which is not clear to me where to look
12:04 hemebond oh underscores... one sec, will have a read
12:04 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt
12:05 hemebond oh...
12:05 SunPowered I believe in the old DO API you would enter the API name
12:05 hemebond in an sshd file, aren't there multiple entries, one for each user or something?
12:06 otter768 joined #salt
12:06 SunPowered is this the user that salt should use to connect to the provider?
12:06 hemebond so when you SSH to a server it matches your SSH key to that key?
12:06 hemebond Possibly, yes.
12:06 hemebond "ssh_key_names: do_key_name"
12:06 hemebond Does that make sense to you? That line?
12:07 hemebond do_key_name
12:07 hemebond I'm assuming that means a Digital Ocean key name.
12:07 supersheep joined #salt
12:07 SunPowered well there is a ssh_key_file parameter that points to my SSH key
12:08 SunPowered It is not clear what I should set the ssh_key_name parameter to, no.
12:08 hemebond https://coderwall.com/p/0ejouq/some-notes-on-getting-salt-cloud-configurations-right-for-droplet-provisioning-on-digitalocean
12:08 hemebond Is it like Github where you upload keys and then reference them by an ID?
12:09 hemebond So you upload multiple SSH keys and then reference them via an email address or something.
12:09 hemebond That would possibly be the ssh_key_names value
12:09 SunPowered yes, that makes some sense
12:09 SunPowered The article references a mashup of v1 and v2 API parameters
12:10 SunPowered client_id is used in v1, but we are on v2
12:10 hemebond "The SSH key name can be found under the "SSH Keys" section."
12:10 hemebond Is there a Digital Ocean web interface where you can see ssh keys?
12:11 SunPowered yes, just found it
12:12 SunPowered It was misleading that checking my config with "salt-cloud -Q" gave me the all clear
12:12 gldnspud__ joined #salt
12:12 SunPowered as my API key was correct, I could query the API and see all my droplets.  The trouble came when I had to use it and write to my account (via SSH)

16:33 bami007 yup now i see it's python based. What would you use to deploy the images initially? cobbler ?
16:34 iggy depends, I use it mostly in the cloud, so my VM images have the minion software installed on deployment (and I use salt-cloud to deploy the images)
16:39 bami007 thanks for the information, I am looking at using it to deploy openstack and trying to figure out it's advantage versus fuel or packsack
16:39 bami007 packstack*
16:40 iggy never heard of either of those, so I can't speak to that
16:40 bami007 does it let you do baremetal deployment ?
16:41 iggy 2 reasons I love it... python -and- it doesn't require multiple tools to do what I need (i.e. mcollective+puppet, etc)
16:44 kevinquinnyo joined #salt
16:45 bami007 form what i am reading, you could make your images with salt and PXE them to your bare metal nodes. so i guess you could of bare metal provisioning.
16:46 bami007 thanks @iggy

20:42 Rebus Hi I am trying to run a couple of post-startup commands in a docker service container via salt. The docker.run state should work fine for that. Unfortunately I need to check a condition before I run my command and doing so requires a pipe command. This seems to cause a problem with nsenter which docker.run uses internally, because running `nsenter ... echo foo | grep foo` results in `echo foo` being run inside the container, but `| gre
