00:27 TTimo anyone here using salt with windows based minions? I'd like to hear some first hand accounts if it's worth it or if I should look for something else
00:29 upb experience: there is no way to run processes as another user or on the interactive desktop
00:32 TTimo ah, that session 0 thing
00:32 TTimo did you try other tools, any recommendations to look at ?
00:34 cliluw joined #salt
00:35 upb not yet, will have to find a solutin after holidays
00:36 TTimo you're familiar with chocolatey I'm sure
00:36 TTimo (although that's not the same as salt)
00:37 upb nah, has to be salt as the other infra is already on it
00:39 whytewolf after watching people strugle with salt on windows. and hearing horror stories of pretty much every deployment software under the sun when it comes to windows. I wish you good luck
00:40 TTimo right
00:40 whytewolf this is the only one i heard supports windows well. and thats cause well it was written by microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/system-center-configuration-manager/Features.aspx
00:44 TTimo yeah .. trying to avoid purely windows centric solutions if I can
00:45 TTimo I guess if I can get a Windows AMI on AWS that has saltstack ready to go, I could easily play around and experiment
00:47 whytewolf really depends on how indepth you need. honestly if the software needs you to click a button during the install cause it doesn't give you a way around that. then that is a poorly writeen installer. the user thing i can understand. and that feature is coming in boron [runas]
00:48 TTimo chocolatey addresses most of these concerns
00:48 TTimo I would drive chocolatey via saltstack
00:48 whytewolf i have heard some in here doing that. but being the holiday season i doubt any of them are around
00:49 whytewolf there is a chocolatey exacution module also
00:49 whytewolf https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.chocolatey.html
00:50 TTimo yeah that has potential

02:25 lorengordon i actually use salt with windows almost exclusively, and have had very few problems
02:26 lorengordon but i use salt exclusively in masterless mode, so ymmv
02:26 lorengordon i wouldn't touch sccm with a 10 foot pole

04:01 jfindlay TTimo: we have two windows engineers at saltstack and some regular users who are fairly active, including lorengordon.  If you run into problems they're usually good at helping people get things resolved
04:01 jfindlay I think the windows support has made good improvements with each major release

10:04 MTecknology I accidentally deleted my VM Host today. I basically just destroyed everything. The only thing I have to get back up is the git clone of my salt states. Thankfully, that puts me in a pretty dang good position. I just finally got the pfSense VM up and running. Now it's time for the temp WLC and then the salt master, then git, and everything else. :D

I thought doing {% for user, settings in salt['pillar.get']('users', {}).items() %} should not throw "Rendering SLS 'base:users' failed: Jinja variable 'list object' has no attribute 'items'" as it sets a default value on which .items() should work.. or not?

18:14 masterkorp I use sensu for monitoring
18:14 masterkorp you can integrate both
18:15 M-MadsRC1 I tried sensu, though couldn't get it working on CentOS (Can't remember why, guess I'll try again during the holidays)

19:27 zmalone if you force update, or remove the conflicting dependencies ahead of time, or completely uninstall salt first, you should be able to make it work
