03:32 daswathn The link to installing salt-minion
03:34 daswathn is broken for SLES11 SP2, the repo is not avaiable anymore.. any help in finding the old repo for we have a huge number of SLES11 SP2 servers still running in the enviornment
03:34 daswathn http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:languages:python/SLE_11_SP2/devel:languages:python.repo
03:34 daswathn broken link on the offical SaltStack website, any help will be much appericated

03:49 whytewolf daswathn: that link is suse. and unforchantly that link was most likely the only place that SLES11 SP2 packages existed. and this looks like Suse pulled all of the SP2 links off of download.opensuse.org
03:52 daswathn Oops .. that's not good news from SUSE, any suggestion how I can install the minion onto my SLES11 SP2 servers, for we would need to have them also under the salt-master.
03:52 whytewolf well. you could use a pip install
03:54 whytewolf you might also want to start looking at an upgrade path. cause gernal support of sp2 ended in 2014
03:57 whytewolf daswathn: could also just be a temporary lapse on suse's part
03:59 daswathn whytewolf: upgrade is in pipeline but due to some legacy software that are installed on the servers the upgrade is on a temp hold... hope its a temp lapse from SUSE :)
04:00 daswathn did try the pip route, the scripts internally still point to the same link and the installation fails, I will dig in more into this today, thank you for the reply.

07:43 stooj Is there an easy way of adding OS support? pkg.installed works for Arch, but not Antergos (a respin of Arch)
07:50 MTecknology Which version did raet come in?
07:52 stooj I'm not using raet, using zmq. Will raet work?
07:54 AndreasLutro joined #salt
07:57 kidneb joined #salt
07:58 MTecknology stooj: you have to choose zmq or raet and it's not, afaik, a seamless transition
08:00 stooj Hmm, I think I must have missed something along the way. Does raet have better OS support than zmq? I've got a top file that can install on an arch minion, but not on an antergos minion
08:00 stooj I thought it was just a difference in communication methods
08:01 stooj Sorry, I thought raet/zmq was just a difference in communication methods
08:05 MTecknology eh... if you don't know you're upset with zmq, you're probably best off just sticking with it
08:06 MTecknology In my case, I know why I want raet, and I'm building a whole infrastructure from ground up

09:12 MTecknology I have salt-minion, salt-master, libnacl-dev, nacl-tools, python-ioflo, and python-raet installed. I'm using 2015.8.3 from the salt repos on debian 8.

09:18 MTecknology looks like I might need to pull it from pip :(
09:19 MTecknology wow, python-pip has a crazy amount of dependencies
09:22 MTecknology WOOOO!!!! RAET!!
09:24 MTecknology "Insecure logging configuration detected! Sensitive data may be logged."  ... hmm
09:26 otter768 joined #salt
09:32 MTecknology screw it... back to zmq
09:37 MaZ- joined #salt
09:49 MTecknology WOOHOO!! Got that done. Now, what should I pick for a git server? I usually pick gitlab, but it's kinda heavy weight.
09:50 jaybocc2 joined #salt
09:54 whytewolf MTecknology: missing libnacl isn't that bad of error. just means you can't use salt.runners.nacl and salt.modules.nacl but if you want it it can be found here https://github.com/saltstack/libnacl . also the "Insecure logging configuration detected! Sensitive data may be logged." is about using -l debug, -l garbage or -l trace
09:55 MTecknology whytewolf: for some other reason not spit out, salt-master and salt-minion were dying when trying to fire up the daemon with libnacl from pypi
10:00 whytewolf maybe it is the lib right after libnacl.
10:01 whytewolf cause I don't have libnacl installed at all and it isn't causing a problem
10:01 whytewolf I did have an issue where lspci was hanging that was causing some nasty side effects with salt
10:02 whytewolf that looked like it was libnacl
10:02 MTecknology are you using raet?
10:03 whytewolf oh yeah. i did forget the raet using nacl.
10:03 whytewolf coarse. raet is still considered unstable
10:03 whytewolf and most likely will be for a long time
10:03 MTecknology heheh... ya
10:04 MTecknology raet is sexy as hell, though
10:04 whytewolf they kind of put the dev work for it on the back burner cause well it doens't work that well.

10:06 whytewolf RAET is great on paper. but like most things UDP pbased it has to work perfectly other wise things can go hay wire.
10:07 malinoff whytewolf: I've asked Thomas about performance benchmarks months ago, especially about comparison with proper AMQP brokers like rabbitmq
10:07 malinoff whytewolf: do you know about such benchmarks?
10:07 kidneb joined #salt
10:08 whytewolf nope
10:08 MTecknology hm.. there's a Denied keys now? How does that differ from Unaccepted?
10:09 malinoff I have no idea how a transport protocol implementation can be developed without benchmarks, when the author says that rabbitmq is slow
10:09 whytewolf denied keys are for servers that had accepted keys but another server trys saying that they are them

11:03 viq gitolite is nice if you want ACLs but don't need web frontend
11:04 MTecknology viq: heh... I'm /almost/ done writing the states for deploying the git server using gitlab
11:05 MTecknology Then I'll move the salt stuff to git instead of local fs

11:20 viq need food, back a bit later ;)
11:22 MTecknology took a new job, travel like an insane lunatic (12 days gone, 2 days home, repeat). I pretty much just live in a hotel in Los Angeles. A few days ago I managed to delete my vm host, backups, virtual machines, router, configs, etc.
11:23 MTecknology I'm trying to rebuild all of it from my git clone of salt repos
11:23 colegatron joined #salt
11:26 MTecknology It took three days, but I finally have my vm host, router, vlans, vpn, subnets, as much ipv6 as my isp will give me, and other networking stuff set up as well as the new WLC/AP. I got a debian template created for my environment. I recently got the salt master deployed and now I'm trying to deploy gitlab via salt.

22:23 mage_ hello
22:24 mage_ what's the safest manner to file.managed an SSL private key?
22:25 mage_ should I store it in pillar, or just use a - source: salt://my/private/key ?
22:26 whytewolf mage_: put the key in a pillar. [either ext_pillar or a normal pillar. and use contents_pillar
22:26 justanotheruser joined #salt
22:26 mage_ how could I 'hide' it in the git repository ?
22:27 TyrfingMjolnir joined #salt

22:29 whytewolf mage_: by not putting it in there to begin with... thats why i mentioned ext_pillars.
22:30 mage_ ah .. :) I'll take a loot at ext_pillars, neved used them before
22:30 mage_ thanks
22:31 abednarik joined #salt
22:32 whytewolf ext_pillars are great for seperating out the meat of the pillars. and using third party software for storing pillars [to bad there isn't a vault ext_pillar yet]
22:32 babilen mage_: You could also just place it in /srv/pillar on the master directly
22:32 babilen Yeah, vault ext pillar would be great
22:34 mage_ can I use a file ?
22:35 babilen Isn't everything a file?
22:36 babilen But if you ask for what I think you ask for you *could* use the dreadful https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/pillar/all/salt.pillar.file_tree.html but I wouldn't recommend to go that way
22:36 mage_ mmh, I have the file "postfix.key" which contain a private key, should I just copy/paste that key in a somekey: the_content ?
22:36 babilen I'd do the latter
22:36 babilen (or use a different external pillar)
22:37 mage_ ok, let me try :)
22:38 babilen And make that https://www.refheap.com/113176
22:38 babilen if you have multiple lines
22:38 mage_ putting the private.key file in states/ would be insecure, right ?
22:38 whytewolf VERY
22:38 mage_ (:
22:39 whytewolf any minion can see all of states/
22:39 mage_ the file_tree looks "interesting"
22:40 babilen I dislike it because it conflates targeting and a file based pillar access scheme (i.e. namespacing)
22:40 babilen The way to do this would have been/is to let directory structure define the namespacing to still require explicit targeting
22:40 mage_ yep.. I thin I'll just do https://www.refheap.com/113176
22:40 mage_ think*
22:41 mage_ and maybe use the GPG renderer to store that info in the git
