00:00 whytewolf vmware always disapointed me on several layers. but i actualy ditched it at home cause i needed a windows box in order to actualy host a decent vcenter. and vcenters were not redundent at the time either.
00:02 drawsmcgraw So glad I've avoided VMware thus far...
00:02 Karunamon you have no idea how much i wish I had that choice.
00:02 drawsmcgraw I always saw it in the distance and kept my... er... distance
00:02 Karunamon but at this point i'm not sure if the weird disk add behavior on the cloud connector is a bug in vmware or in salt
00:02 drawsmcgraw Last I had to interact with it (several years ago), I only hit it with the Powershell module
00:02 Karunamon i've got a scsi device created in my profile, so that's not it
00:03 whytewolf Karunamon: if you can't do it through the UI either that sounds like Vmware
00:03 Karunamon Well, when I create a hard drive in the UI, you get a scsi controller for free
00:03 gtmanfred for that kind of stuff, it might be worth while to check the libvirt integration with vmware, and using saltvirt

01:45 twork i need a reminder on the particulars of storing a whole file in the pillar, a la, foo: | [...]
01:46 twork been reading every pillar doc i know how to find, no luck
01:46 MikeyYeahYeah joined #salt

01:51 XenophonF twork: do you need an example?
01:52 XenophonF twork: you could use https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/pillar/all/salt.pillar.file_tree.html
01:53 racooper joined #salt
01:53 twork XenophonF: examples i have. actually i have a particular question.
01:53 twork let me go look at that
01:53 XenophonF twork: alternatively, you could use YAML's multiline string syntax http://www.yaml.org/spec/1.2/spec.html#|%20literal%20style//
01:54 XenophonF twork: another alternative is YAML's !!binary type http://yaml.org/type/binary.html
01:55 XenophonF I use that one to embed a PKCS#12 file into a Pillar value, which I then reference from a file.managed state by using the contents_pillar kwarg
01:55 XenophonF the file_tree ext_pillar module is less of a hack, though
01:56 XenophonF i'd use it, except i need everything in git
01:56 XenophonF what's your question?
01:56 twork well, i'm nowhere near so sophisticated
01:57 twork i'm using the pillar to store some keys
01:57 twork one key per file
01:57 twork i put together a pillar file with a few keys, but that doesn't seem to be working and i'm wondering if that's either because it won't, or because i've got the syntax wrong
01:59 ageorgop joined #salt
02:01 XenophonF ok
02:01 XenophonF we can figure this out
02:02 XenophonF so on your salt master, you have a directory like /srv/pillar, right?
02:02 twork sure
02:02 XenophonF and in that directory, you have a file called something like mypillars.sls
02:03 twork yes
02:03 XenophonF which is a yaml dictionary full of key-value pairs, right?
02:03 twork if you say so!
02:03 XenophonF could be as simple as "foo: bar"
02:03 twork i haz lotsa pillar filez.
02:04 XenophonF which creates a pillar key named foo and assigns it the string value "bar"
02:04 XenophonF ok cool
02:04 XenophonF and you have a /srv/pillar/top.sls file
02:04 twork yep
02:04 XenophonF and that assigns the pillar files to selected minions
02:04 twork yep
02:04 XenophonF just like /srv/salt/states/top.sls
02:04 twork yep
02:05 XenophonF er
02:05 XenophonF ok
02:05 XenophonF so on a minion you should be able to run something like the following from the command line (as root)
02:05 XenophonF salt-call saltutil.refresh_pillar
02:05 twork or, from the master. sure, i do that all the time.
02:06 XenophonF ok
02:06 XenophonF and then you can run salt-call pillar.get foo, which should return "bar" in our example
02:06 twork yep
02:06 XenophonF OK good
02:06 twork or, trees of pillar stuff, depending...
02:06 XenophonF dem's the basics - so what's _not_ working?
02:07 twork here's what is working:
02:09 twork i have a state that makes three files on the minion, a key file and two certs.  each of those come out of a separate file on the pillar, with syntax keyfile: | [ newline, garbage garbege garbage ]
02:09 XenophonF sure, something like https://github.com/irtnog/salt-pillar-example/blob/master/salt/example/com/init.sls#L110
02:09 twork i'd like to condense my three pillar files into one. so, first question: in this context, can i?
02:10 twork aha.
02:10 twork yep, just like that.
02:10 twork hm.
02:11 twork ok, then this tells me that i've got a syntax booboo somewhere.
02:11 twork that's all i really needed to know.
02:11 XenophonF you could use https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.file.html#salt.states.file.recurse
02:11 twork my setup isn't working and before i spent a ton more time trying to figure out where i'd gone wrong, since this is the first time i've done exactly this i wanted to make sure thre wasn't a reason why my idea won't work
02:12 XenophonF set template: jinja in the kwargs to that state, and then each file can consist of a call to pillar.get, a la {{ salt['pillar.get']('some:key') }}
02:13 XenophonF or you can use three file.managed states, only instead of setting the source kwarg, you'd set the contents_pillar kwarg to some:key
02:13 XenophonF gotta run time to read night night stories
02:13 XenophonF bbl
02:13 twork tx as always

21:19 frew viq: the fragments make this way harder and grosser; if I ditch them for a single template I think that check_cmd will work fine
21:20 viq frew: how about using an accumulator instead?
21:20 netcho_ joined #salt
21:20 frew I didn't really follow what that was
21:20 frew but I'm totally willing
21:21 viq It's a "throw a bunch of text into a dictionary to put in file" ish
21:21 frew ok
21:21 frew so basically I'd be adding to the dict with each other fragment
21:21 viq yeah
21:21 frew and then centrally building up the file
21:21 viq indeed
21:21 frew ok I thogutht htat was the case
21:22 frew seemed like a hassle but I feel like I'm fighting with a tornado here
21:22 frew so I might as well do it right :)
21:22 iggy norii: you could do it with a reactor when the minion connects (unless you need the volume before then...)
21:22 * viq tries to figure out why his gitfs stopped working
21:22 viq short of "duh, pygit2 made changes, what did you expect?", which I hope is not the case...
21:25 frew viq: so it looks to me like with an accumulator you get to pass in a *single* list per accumulator to the given managed file
21:25 viq https://pbot.rmdir.de/-esH-cNAeuO2xQqq_vbxjA here's my whole config, only hostnames changed, if anyone wants to look
21:26 norii iggy:that  would  work for /srv i think. the other  mount is /var/log

21:26 viq frew: I'm quite certain you can have multitple states adding to single accumulator
21:27 Crazy67 joined #salt
21:28 frew yeah I don't think so either.
21:28 viq ?
21:28 frew I gotta go get lunch, I'll think about this during
21:28 frew thanks
21:29 viq sure

21:29 viq frew: IIRC I did something like that some time ago, but there was one trick that the accumulator was getting generated in somewhat random order. But you can put stuff into one multiple times to generate what is to be put in file
21:30 * viq grumbles as it seems world doesn't want him to have backups

22:07 heath_ I am running salt in a docker container so that I can have multiple salt masters on a single server. How do I ensure a that I am able to destroy and bring up new containers without loosing the state of my salt master to minion relationship?

22:14 norii maybe mount a local disk or  use  the gitfs backend?
22:14 norii or just  check your stuff into git

22:23 racooper is there a way in jinja to get the single IP address from a server in the form 1.2.3.4 without getting it formatted like ['1.2.3.4'] ? I've tried both fqdn_ip4 and ipv4 grains with no luck.

22:58 RandyT I can see the beacons associated with proper minion in pillar, but beacons.list does not show any configured beacons for the respective minion

23:14 RandyT dependency on novaclient to run beacons? Does that make sense? Not mentioned in the doc from what I have found.
23:14 hal58th Nope, it says it's fetching from the git repo and then returns true.

23:34 zmalone With includes are more people using / as a delimiter, or .? (as per https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/states_pt1.html#install-the-package )
23:35 zmalone I'm looking at a bunch of formulas with a mixture, so .s for the final separator, and slashes for rest, and I'm wondering if this is a common style that I just have not seen before.
