02:50 beardedeagle I am surprised there is no documentation on top level grains vs non-top level grains with salt-cloud. took me a minute to figure out why the grains in my map was being overridden by the grains in my extended profile.
02:50 iggy john75077: there's saltpad (needs some work imo) or the one that comes with SSE ($$$)
02:51 beardedeagle there is also molten
02:51 iggy beardedeagle: PR welcome
02:51 john75077 molten?
02:51 beardedeagle https://github.com/martinhoefling/molten
02:52 beardedeagle saltpad dev and this guy actually communicate with each other about their projects.
02:52 john75077 i was trying saltpad and couldnt get past the config
02:52 beardedeagle molten is the easier to setup out of the two
02:52 beardedeagle saltpad requires no config beyond the one wrapped in salt-api itself.
02:53 beardedeagle and some pull requests, including one I put in, for the docs around saltpad were just merged.
02:53 iggy molten seems like about the same level as halite was before it was abandoned
02:53 beardedeagle should be a little easier to understand
02:53 beardedeagle @iggy: basically
02:54 racooper joined #salt
02:54 beardedeagle but it is fairly easy to pick up and extend, granted you know reactjs
02:54 * iggy runs
02:54 beardedeagle lol
02:55 john75077 im working on a POC for saltstack - and spin up vm's
02:55 nethershaw joined #salt
02:55 john75077 we are starting with one master and one minion to see how feasible it really is
02:56 beardedeagle spin up vm's via what?
02:57 beardedeagle @iggy: I will get a pr in for that.
02:58 john75077 i think it was on saltpad where one of the screenshots showed vm's being managed on saltstack
02:59 beardedeagle what version? the new reactjs one? or the python based one?
03:00 john75077 i think its the reactjs
03:00 beardedeagle there is just the one about highstate in that version that I found.
03:00 john75077 ive been going over so much stuff about saltstack its almost coffee:30
03:03 beardedeagle you planning to use salt-cloud?
03:04 john75077 yes
03:05 john75077 i am working on a project where i will have about 5 machines to start and be able to bring vm's up or down as needed - i found the url that showed to use saltstack to help spin up vm's ..
03:05 beardedeagle joined #salt
03:05 john75077 https://hveem.no/saltvirt
03:06 john75077 sadly it looked really good and when i checked the code it hadnt been updated for 3 years so i'm not going to use it
03:07 beardedeagle yeah, I have seen that page. probably not good for much beyond the states.
03:08 john75077 i would like to use lxc for the vm's and have seen management pages for lxc - id like to find something that will help with the whole effort
03:08 john75077 or entire solution
03:08 beardedeagle https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/lxc.html ?
03:08 beardedeagle I assume you have seen this page?
03:09 john75077 yes - i dont mind CLI - however if i am going to get this to have buy-in i need to make it a gui
03:09 john75077 or web page
03:11 beardedeagle So...short of paying for SSE, you really can only set up 'templates' in saltpad or molten to be used to spin up, modify, or spin down vm's.
03:12 beardedeagle or write you're own ui, maybe pull from saltpad or molten as a upstream project?
03:12 flowstate joined #salt
03:12 om Hey guys
03:13 om I am doing a PaaS PoC
03:13 om and need some pointers with salt
03:14 om the idea was to have a Frontend UI input params into json or yaml so that those params can be parsed and automatically triggered into Salt deploy.
03:14 om are pillars appropriate for this?
03:14 om or is there another method...
03:15 beardedeagle @john75077: I am actually working on a private project called alkali for salt-cloud openstack deployments/management from a webui
03:16 beardedeagle I would use pillars if you are passing sensitive information.
03:16 buhman om: you could make that work
03:16 beardedeagle I use pillars with salt-api/jenkins saltstack plugin for zero downtime docker deployments.
03:16 buhman om: you'd put the pillar data in an environment unique to each deploy, then tell localclient to use that environment
03:16 om so salt-master can listen when new pillar files are added?
03:16 om and run?
03:16 buhman eh?
03:16 buhman why would you want that?
03:17 beardedeagle I am also confused by that last sentence @om
03:17 buhman om: what's wrong with having your app tell the salt master to do the thing when the app is ready?
03:17 om I don't want configuration to maintain on cron.  Just want it to trigger a run when a new file gets added
03:18 om hmm...
03:18 om true
03:18 om why would I need environment for each local client?
03:19 buhman ehh?
03:19 buhman I said 'environment unique to each deploy'
03:19 om oh ok
03:19 om yea
03:19 om misread
03:19 om thanks
03:19 buhman https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/clients/index.html#localclient
03:19 anmol joined #salt
03:20 buhman you'll say saltenv='whatever'
03:23 om interesting
03:24 john75077 @beardedeagle - with salt cloud it does help with setting up local lxc
03:25 om well, really need to get more info for requirements of the PaaS and then use that for the design
03:25 om I am in discovery phase now,  then on to analysis and design
03:25 om just doing some research on what technologies I should use for middleware/deploy
03:26 om salt is my new thing and like it a lot more than puppet and even chef (of which I have more experience with).  I like the salt top down and simplicity of it
03:27 om I think they want to deploy on a multi-tenant system as well as VPS for dedicated customers with higher tier plans
03:28 om basically, the customer client UI should do all the things needed for them , deploy and get messages back from the deploy
03:28 om sure salt can do this... just looking into hows
03:28 om thanks
03:28 beardedeagle @john75077: the salt-cloud lxc module? setting up lxc itslef no, creating containers yes
03:30 john75077 @beardedeagle - whats really interesting with saltstack is you can setup a lxc cluster and install saltstack inside the containers - I'm not so sure about that
03:31 beardedeagle I have a coworker here who does the same thing  with docker containers
03:31 beardedeagle actually his master is a container for that mater
03:32 om anyone used kubernetes with salt?
03:33 beardedeagle @om: I am actually working on that next, might use this as a jump point: https://github.com/JohnTheodore/kubernetes-saltstack
03:34 beardedeagle maybe rewrite it into a proper formula
03:35 om very nice
03:38 om Im a total noob to kubernetes
03:39 om just trying to figure out what it will facilitate in terms of deploy
03:39 om not sure I need it
03:40 om I guess it will be best to use docker ct inside Nodes than straight up VM's
03:40 john75077 @om - one of the options i am looking at is using lxc and putting saltstack in them - can manage lxc https://lxc-webpanel.github.io/index.html
03:41 om nice
03:42 om I think the primary functions of the top layer frontend UI for our customers should not need web panel UI control.
03:42 om all they want is ie.:
03:42 om 1 - name the app and give it a domain
03:42 om 2 - deploy the app
03:42 om 3 - connect to it via sftp or file manager
03:43 om 4 - connect to app db via phpmyadmin
03:43 om should be dev'd for multi-tenant and dedicated VM depending on customer plan
03:44 om also want backups, staging site creation (cloning and search replace domains in config and db)
03:44 om gonna be fun!
03:44 om that's for sure
03:45 om I was looking at different options...
03:45 john75077 @om theres a lot of different stuff out there still i have spent about a month looking for what i thought was good stuff
03:45 om I want to use salt
03:45 beardedeagle shouldn't be too hard for you @om, I am 99% with something similar
03:45 om damn
03:45 om awesome!
03:46 om sounds like the 3 of us should collab actually
03:46 om lolol
03:46 beardedeagle well I am pretty tied to openstack currently
03:46 om So I really want to stick with salt
03:46 om I use openstack a lot too
03:46 beardedeagle but I am working on v3 of my platform which is completely generalized
03:46 om but this new project can't get close to afford that
03:46 john75077 @beardedeagle - which version of vagrant is needed for the molten project
03:48 om I am looking at the following but not sure what would be best.  I know I want to use salt 99% sure.
03:48 om But for middleware for the PaaS...
03:48 om OpenShift
03:49 om kubernetes, staccato, or just use salt
03:49 om *stackato
03:49 om probably best use salt and one of these
03:49 beardedeagle I am perma running latest and only very recently found molten

03:53 om I am way behind you guys though
03:54 om beardedeagle: I like that choice
03:54 om I am thinking about PoC that first

22:14 Pie_Mage i'm a salt noob
22:14 Pie_Mage here's my issue though:
22:15 Pie_Mage i want to define a salt state which is reusable for multiple targets inside a loop
22:15 Pie_Mage it pulls user data from a salt pillar,
22:16 Pie_Mage i can't seem to figure it out... any sense of direction would be of huge help

22:30 Pie_Mage babilen: i have my pillar users set up so I have a dict of data define git servers to add to the fingerprint/ssh config block/key
22:31 Pie_Mage then it would use if/else structures to determine which states to include as it loops over the list of users
22:32 Pie_Mage this is really my first time using a system management framework
22:33 Pie_Mage so this is what my pillar looks like:
22:34 Pie_Mage http://pastebin.com/Dn2YVc5p
22:35 Pie_Mage and I have two separate states, one for adding a local-git server and one for github
22:35 Pie_Mage i am still using file.manage to put the private keys on the minions

22:37 Pie_Mage i'll fix that later
