01:06 ahammond I have a reactor that fires an orchestration. The orchestration runs a state on a bunch of servers. I nee to generate an email which says which of those servers ran the state successfully, which failed and which didn't respond. What is the correct way to do this?

08:53 MTecknology aboe: all of us using the same timezone would prevent that?
08:54 aboe MTecknology, lol
08:55 MTecknology I keep seeing a lot of commercials for turbotax. I really need to call a good tax guy...
08:58 aboe MTecknology, in my country the government tax department has a saying, taxes we can't make it fun just easier...
08:59 MTecknology heheh, nice
08:59 MTecknology what country is that?
08:59 aboe The Netherlands
09:00 MTecknology I /think/ the saying my country uses is "taxes: pay us or we'll fuck you"
09:00 aboe MTecknology, I think that's universal...
09:01 MTecknology I have 8 different documents for my tax guy plus some other details and that's still not everything he needs
09:03 aboe that's so much fun, finding out the one document he needs is nowhere to be found...
09:03 kshlm joined #salt
09:03 aboe I can relate to that...
09:03 MTecknology 9* documents
09:03 MTecknology I just realized I know of two more he'll need
09:05 aboe MTecknology, what do you think about this, in the netherlands we have a time limit in which do to the taxes, so the whole country cramps the tax website in 1 month....
09:05 aboe and you think they improve the capacity...not...
09:06 MTecknology we have that too, but almost all of us have to pay other people to figure the shit out for us so places like ness tax and h&r block have to take on a bunch of temp workers to fill the need
09:07 MTecknology People like me have such lovely situations that they need to shop around and find the best, pay 4x as much, and hope they're available
09:12 aboe We had that situation before, now the government gives us their estimate, and you can fill out the web forms yourself...and change what the government thinks was right.

19:04 Borromini hi guys. i am trying to get salt remove users & groups with the same name (Debian created them). I can't split them up because Salt will complain about duplicate states; if I put them both in one state file then Salt complains about a (non existent) whitespace in the function

21:01 Fiber^ joined #salt
21:03 AndreasLutro downhill_: the docs seem to be wrong - try prefixing the additional arguments with the argument name, e.g. salt '*' user.add USERNAME uid=1111 gid=1111
21:03 zmalone joined #salt
21:04 downhill_ I did, and it didn't work, either :(
21:04 AndreasLutro can you show us what command you ran and the output you get?
21:05 downhill_ user.add mydumbuser uid=2000 gid=2000
21:05 downhill_ it just returns False for the host.
21:05 AndreasLutro that probably just means the user couldn't be added
21:05 AndreasLutro maybe the username/uid/gid are taken
21:05 downhill_ but if I run it without additional args (just mydumbuser) it works. the uid and gids are not taken :/
21:06 AndreasLutro try running the command with -l debug

21:09 downhill_ ah ha!
21:11 downhill_ stupid me thought it could create a user where a group didn't exist yet. Once I started reading about how salt really works (using standard utilities) it made more sense that prerequisites must be met first. I feel stupid.
21:12 brianfeister joined #salt
21:12 downhill_ got 'er up and running by creating the appropriate group on all servers first, as anybody would expect :)
21:13 AndreasLutro sounds counter-intuitive to me, I wouldn't feel stupid
21:14 downhill_ Well, you either get a system with complete control (and burden of administration falls totally on the admin), or some flexible behemoth that does a lot of stuff for you, but maybe in a way you wouldn't do if you did it yourself :)
21:14 downhill_ now I understand where salt lies
21:15 downhill_ thanks!
21:17 AndreasLutro I don't know, I think salt does both depending on which bits of it you're using
21:17 downhill_ maybe it's because I'm not using states yet?
21:19 downhill_ I've literally touched salt for, oh, 20 mins or so? :)
21:20 AndreasLutro yeah, the user.present state would add the group for you and give you actual error messages if it fails
