01:45 Twiglet anyone have an idea why this top file matches pillar but not states (exactly the same for pillar and states) http://hastebin.com/ohabahemeb.vbs ?
01:46 Twiglet the hostname is 'aptly-prod', it matches '*' for core but not the 'aptly-*'
01:47 Twiglet oddly work fine for 'aptly-dev' though

15:57 cpowell whats the best way to handle jinja templating when the file contains tons of curl brackets?
15:57 cpowell I need to render {{{var}}, {{ antoher var}}},
15:58 cpowell can you escape them? \{{{var}}, {{ another var }}\} ?
15:58 XenophonF {{ "{something}" }}
15:58 cpowell or am I stuck with annoying string concatination
15:58 XenophonF or rather {{ "{{something}}" }}
15:59 XenophonF which is ugly but i don't think jinja offers any alternatives
15:59 XenophonF http://jinja.pocoo.org/docs/dev/templates/#escaping
15:59 cpowell yeah, i read that
15:59 cpowell ok then, it will be ugly
16:00 cpowell {{ '{'~k~'}' }}
16:00 cpowell uggg
16:00 XenophonF format strings
16:00 VR-Jack Can't you just do "{{var1}}{{var2}}" ?
16:01 XenophonF {{ "{{%s}}"|format(foo) }}
16:01 VR-Jack or are you trying to actually render a variable using the contents of a variable?
16:01 XenophonF http://jinja.pocoo.org/docs/dev/templates/#format
16:01 cpowell no, its erlang config file
16:01 XenophonF maybe it'd make more sense to use a different templating engine for that file?
16:02 VR-Jack Not familiar with erlang, but guessing you'll have to escape the {{ if that's what you need
16:03 XenophonF maybe the mako or wempy renderers would work better for you?
16:04 denys joined #salt
16:04 VR-Jack XenophonF I think the problem is the disire to use jinja but still allow {{}} through to the config. If I understand right.
16:05 XenophonF of course, but then the answer is as given in the jinja documentation
16:06 XenophonF i.e., variable expression, format string, or raw blocks

22:56 whatapain so digital ocean has depreciated v1 of their api which means i can no longer create any images for digital ocean, i go modify my cloud.profile/digitalocean configuration and change "provider" to "driver" then "digital_ocean" to "digital_ocean_v2" and now i'm getting the digital_ocean_v2 driver couldn't be loaded
22:57 whatapain the only dependency is "requests" which is already installed
22:57 whatapain there's no descriptive error other than "KeyError: 'provider'"
22:59 wangofett You just said you chande 'provider' to 'driver', no?
22:59 wangofett Seems like it's looking for 'provider'
22:59 wangofett which you don't have anymore :(
23:00 whatapain no, that's not what it's referencing.  even if i switch my key from driver: to provider: which is the "old way" it still causes the same problem
23:00 ekleog Hi! Is there a relatively easy way to move a file from one minion to another?
23:01 whatapain does anyone know how i can get more verbose output from salt-cloud other than -l trace?
23:01 wangofett ah. Boo. Well, the only other help I can offer then is to use the source: https://github.com/saltstack/salt/blob/develop/salt/cloud/clouds/digital_ocean.py
23:02 wangofett ekleog: cmd.run scp, perhaps?

23:02 whatapain Removing 'digital_ocean_v2' from the available providers list

23:03 wangofett ekleog: you could turn on minionfs, I suppose
23:03 wangofett https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/minionfs.html
23:05 wangofett another alternative, if the servers can see each other, is orchestration https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/tutorials/states_pt5.html
23:06 ekleog Great for minionfs!
23:06 ekleog As for orchestrate, I had seen it, but didn't find a way to move a file from one server to another, given it doesn't appear to allow to retrieve the result of a command into a variable or anything similar?
23:06 wangofett You could have three orchestration states, one that turns on an http server on minion A (http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/tech-tip-really-simple-http-server-python), downloads on minion B, and then kills the server on minion A
23:06 wangofett but that 's pretty sketchy
23:07 ekleog Indeed
23:07 ekleog (esp. given we're trying to transfer https certs :°)
23:07 wangofett don't have those in a pillar?
23:08 wangofett :(

23:19 snicers-work Does anyone here use boto in their projects?
23:20 wt joined #salt
23:21 RandyT snicers-work I do
23:22 snicers-work RandyT, I am getting the following: State 'boto_rds.present' was not found in SLS 'rds'
23:22 snicers-work Does that sound to you like boto (or boto rds) is not installed or something else?
23:24 ageorgop joined #salt
23:24 RandyT could be that boto is not installed on your minion
23:25 RandyT you may need to make boto a pip.installed requirement.
23:26 RandyT snicers-work: if you don't know about it, you will also find that 'salt-run state.event pretty=True' is very useful thing to have running in a terminal on your master as you develop these states.
23:26 whatapain so, the answer is, don't use "digital_ocean_v2" and just use "digital_ocean" after making sure you're at the latest code version for salt and salt-cloud
23:26 RandyT not to mention the debug log on the minion...
23:27 RandyT between those to resources, I have found most things I get stuck with are answered there.
23:27 ggoZ joined #salt
23:27 snicers-work boto is a pip.installed requirment.
23:28 snicers-work destroy and creating a new instance got me here: Failed to create myrds RDS.
23:28 snicers-work so much closer!
23:28 RandyT snicers-work: boto is pretty good about telling you what AWS permissions you ran afoul
23:29 RandyT I suspect that is the next hurdle
23:29 snicers-work aGREED.
23:29 snicers-work Sorry, caps.
23:30 jfindlay snicers-work: when you get errors about things like,`'boto_rds.present' was not found ...`, if you look in the source code of the module(s) in question, there is a `__virtual__` function that should be able to tell you the reason the module didn't load
23:30 Guest35664 joined #salt
23:30 jfindlay we've made some effort recently to use a new loader feature to return the reason for the failed load back to the user
23:30 jfindlay but not all modules have been converted yet
23:30 PeterO joined #salt
23:30 jfindlay if I had a weekend free, I would knock out 100-200 of those :(
23:32 snicers-work My permissions look good in AWS, still failing with generic 'Failed to create myrds RDS.
23:32 snicers-work '
23:35 RandyT snicers-work: what does debug log tell you?
23:37 snicers-work are you talking the '-l debug' option?
23:37 snicers-work RandyT, ^
23:38 RandyT yes, and are you running this with salt-call and the machine you are running on has either keys or privileges to create an RDS?
23:38 RandyT can you create an RDS from the command line using aws cli?
23:39 snicers-work I am doing `salt -l debug '*' state.highstate`
23:39 snicers-work all permissions inside AWS look good.
23:40 RandyT snicers-work: I'd recommend that you narrow down the state that you are trying to execute when creating AWS resources.
23:40 snicers-work I have not tried using aws cli, but I can through the web interface.
23:40 RandyT salt-call -l debug state.sls path.to.rdsstate
23:41 RandyT or salt-call -l debug state.sls_id create_rds path.aws.resources
23:41 RandyT the last one being example of just calling state-id from the sls file
23:42 snicers-work RandyT, `salt-call -l debug state.sls rds/init.sls` <- does that look right? I get `Master hostname: 'salt' not found. Retrying in 30 seconds`
23:42 snicers-work Should I be running this from the minion?
23:43 snicers-work what is state.sls, I don't have that file.
23:43 snicers-work ah yea, it is meant locally on a minion. Hang on.
23:43 jfindlay it's an execution module function
23:43 RandyT snicers-work: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.state.html
23:44 jfindlay and confusingly named.  I prefer state.apply
23:44 RandyT @jfindlay: yes, great point that I was not aware of
23:44 jfindlay as a bonus, state.apply runs a highstate if no argument is given :)
23:45 RandyT snicers-work: you must run your rds state on a minion that has permissions to create the rds. there are a bunch of other issues that come into play here, but boto returns a very nice output that shows the return from AWS on what did or did not happen.
23:45 jfindlay ahammond: as long as you register before February 5th, you should get the early registration discount
23:45 RandyT @jfindlay: ah, now that makes sense as well
23:45 shaggy_surfer joined #salt
23:45 jfindlay ahammond: also, discounts can be combined
23:46 snicers-work RandyT, the minion has the aws key and keyid.
23:46 ahammond @jfindlay we're doing that today. :)
23:46 jfindlay ahammond: let me know if you want more info
23:46 shaggy_surfer how do you get notification of a new release in salt?  I am waiting for the release of 2015.8.4 for some bug fixes.  Using official ubuntu repo from saltstack
23:47 jfindlay shaggy_surfer: should be tomorrow morning
23:47 shaggy_surfer is there a mailing list to subscribe to
23:47 jfindlay we'll announce in here and on salt-users
23:47 jfindlay actually, I think there is salt-announce now
23:50 ViciousLove joined #salt
23:51 shaggy_surfer so that is a google group, how do I subscribe to get the salt-announcements?
23:51 ViciousLove Has anyone had problems with git_pillar where pillar files randomly disappear, but reappear after a salt-minion restart?
23:54 jack joined #salt
23:54 snicers-work RandyT, my minion doesn't have sls files except in the cache folder.
23:55 snicers-work Is that normal?
23:55 fxhp joined #salt
23:59 jfindlay shaggy_surfer: it should be a normal google group that you can subscribe to with a google account
23:59 shaggy_surfer thx, I just figured it out.
23:59 RandyT snicers-work: salt-call is used to execute state on the machine it is running on.
