00:53 william-otono jfindlay: In case you were interested in the follow up I did finally fix my issue
00:53 william-otono jfindlay: turns out we just had a bad EC2 instance
00:54 william-otono The IO was just running super slow on that thing
00:55 william-otono But also dug through the code and saw that every instance it can there is a maintainence process that is computing md5 sums of all the files in s3fs to see if it needs to fetch new versions
00:56 william-otono So it is reading through multiple gigs of data every minute or so which seems a little inefficient

03:49 hrumph i have a slightly crazy idea which will probably be shot down as soon as i say what it is
03:49 bshelton229 joined #salt
03:55 keldwud_ hrumph: I'm listening
03:57 hrumph i like haskell better than python although haskell may not have all of the wrappers that python already has haskell not being so popular
03:57 hrumph so my idea is just to make salt so it can *also* run haskell modules and states written in haskell
03:58 hrumph haskell is actually more suited to sysadmin tasks than python. it can do a better job than even powershell at sysadmin type stuff
03:59 hrumph keldwud_, you think this idea has any merit?
04:04 hrumph ???
04:08 hrumph ???
04:10 hrumph so you think this is a good idea?

11:13 Berkeley I am new to saltstack. I have multiple customers with multiple servers. All with different developers(users and ssh keys) and configs. What would be the easiest way to manage this? Creating a new environment for each customer in the top file?
11:15 honestly I would just separate them completely - use different salt masters with different pillars and states
11:17 Berkeley Well, that would make everything easier.
11:18 Berkeley But I have the feeling it isn't possible to run multiple masters on one machine without using virtualization?
11:19 AndreasLutro just apply different states and/or pillars to different servers to achieve the differentiation you need
11:21 honestly Berkeley: it looks like the salt-master binary is set up to be run with more than one instance
11:22 honestly Berkeley: http://linux.die.net/man/1/salt-master
11:22 dmaiocchi joined #salt
11:22 honestly (since you can pass a config dir and pidfile parameter)
11:26 Berkeley Hmm ok. What would be the downside of using environments for this? So instead of production and development just customer1 and customer2?

14:09 XenophonF Berkeley: none?
14:10 XenophonF assuming that secret stuff is in pillar
14:10 XenophonF and that revealing the contents of the states tree doesn't compromise the security of your customers
14:11 zmalone joined #salt
14:12 XenophonF multiple masters on the same host might be more easily implemented using chroot/jail or whatever the fancy marketing lingo is for doing that sort of thing
14:12 XenophonF zones/docker/containers/whatever
14:14 Fiber^ joined #salt
14:14 XenophonF unless you're doing pure app hosting where the customer can't touch the underlying servers, you're probably better off running the masters in separate containers
14:14 XenophonF better privsep that way
14:14 XenophonF IMO
