00:39 Llmiseyhaa babilen: Recommend against having environments?  Huh... that's not in line with the best practices listed.
00:39 Llmiseyhaa I was going to use it to manage a whole develop, release/YYYYMMDD, master, deploy-YYYYMMDD, feature/* workflow out of a la gitflow
00:40 Llmiseyhaa but yeah I've tried various top file merging rules, tried a copy in each repo, etc

01:14 iggy Llmiseyhaa: where does it say that using git with environments is best practice?
01:15 iggy because I'll send a PR to change that
01:15 Llmiseyhaa Well, it said that using environments was best practice; it didn't specify such with git but I didn't see where it said otherwise so I assumed it was best practice everywhere.
01:15 iggy there have been so many bugs in that area that it almost feels like a feature that should be abandoned completely
01:15 iggy still, where does it say that?
01:16 iggy even without git, I don't think suggesting the use of environments should be a "best practice"
01:16 Llmiseyhaa don't have all my links up right now; I'm at home and off work.  But... it's sounding like I should abandon the idea of using git.
01:18 onlyanegg joined #salt
01:18 iggy I used git, just not with environments
01:18 iggy we just had separate masters for each environment and the master was set to pull a specific branch
01:19 Llmiseyhaa Hrrrrrm.  Ok, I could probably do that; I'll prototype that up real quick tomorrow since I do have two sandboxes for this proof of concept

12:23 goudale can we talk about how do you manage your /srv repository on your salt master ?
12:23 goudale is it a git repositorie ?
12:24 goudale do you use some home-made tool to deploy it ?
12:24 goudale do you have multiple users that may need to read it ?
12:25 babilen I use multiple git repositories via GitFS that, in their entirety, make up file_roots
12:26 goudale so there is no files under your /srv, right ?
12:26 goudale can you target branches from the command line ?
12:26 DammitJim I have mhy states and pillar in /srv
12:26 DammitJim but I check them in to git when I make changes
12:28 dorei found it, it's the context and defaults option :)
12:31 goudale in my setup, we track /srv in a git rep
12:31 goudale we have some development branches
12:32 goudale time to times we need to log on the master, then checkout a dev branch, apply some changes to some minions, then checkout back to master
12:33 goudale since we are a few coworkers to do this, we have a special slack channel to tell other coworkers that we "lock" the master to a specific branch
12:33 DammitJim what is a slack channel?
12:33 goudale DammitJim: an irc like
12:33 goudale a chat
12:33 Sylvain31 goudale: I use some separated git: /srv/salt/pillar, /srv/salt/base = my states, /srv/salt/formulas/ some git cloned formulas available in file_roots: one by one.

19:17 sjmh user just asked and I wasn't sure.. easy way to send like a multi line adhoc script to salt cmd.run?
19:18 sjmh probably someway to mangle it with shell
19:19 toanju joined #salt
19:21 iggy cmd.script?
19:23 sjmh we use gitfs for all scripts
19:23 sjmh users don't have access to write to /srv/salt
19:24 sjmh so was trying to come up with a workaround for those times when you want to run something a little more complicated than 'df -k', but not so much that you want to make a script in your repo and push it and wait for the sync, etc
19:27 sjmh https://gist.github.com/sjmh/bfcf85b9d1758a8b7b75c6b3270f3e48
19:27 sjmh that worked
19:27 sjmh ugly, but worked :)
19:28 babilen sjmh: Sounds as if you want to make it easier for users to get scripts into salt://
19:29 sjmh babilen : not really.  our gitfs setup works pretty well.
19:29 sjmh we have alot of teams and i don't want a bunch of people writing junk to salt://
19:30 sjmh and most of this stuff is for 1 time use
19:30 iggy I think cmd.script accepts http(s) url's too
19:32 sjmh iggy - eh, that's still more work than I want to make them go thru.  think of it as 'i have a for loop i want to run on a host, just this one time'.
19:34 sjmh then there'd also be the hassle of making sure the host they're running the script on had access to that web server
19:34 sjmh which in our infrastructure, is not a sure thing.
19:35 babilen sjmh: I totally understand, but I can't think of anything "in between". You already came up with a tricky hack, but cmd.run is more or less for one liners
19:36 babilen cmd.script requires a proper source
19:36 sjmh babilen : sure, and the hack is, for now, what i'll give them.  just trying to think of other bash hacks that make it a bit easier to echo it in there.
19:36 babilen file:// would be nice for your usecase, but even then you probably don't want to open a text editor and write a file
19:37 sjmh does file:// even work?
19:37 lws babilen: Debian 7 i think?
19:37 babilen sjmh: I haven't tried, but I don't think so
19:37 lws Yeah Debian 7.
19:38 babilen lws: So sysvinit ?

20:17 kapra I would like to ask the question regarding the latest development branch of salt
20:18 kapra I tried myself vsphere and vmware driver. According to the documentation using vmware driver I should be able to create vm on stand alone ESXi server
20:18 babilen twork_: How so?

20:19 twork_ babilen: because upgrading the bulds of my systems isn't an option i have right now
20:19 kapra clonefrom: parameter has to be provided otherwise the salt-cloud exits with error
20:20 kapra Could anybody put some light on how to create vm using salt-cloud and stand alone ESXi server
20:20 babilen twork_: No, why does it imply that? There are instructions for wheezy. I mean you should still consider upgrading to jessie, but that is unrelated.
20:20 kapra Thanks
20:20 toofer Hey guys. Does anyone know where I might be able to get an archived version of the salt-minion RPM? I need one for CentOS 6.2 that uses OpenSSL 1.0.0. (old system and unable to patch it).
20:21 twork_ babilen: aha.  (agreed re. 8, but Teh Boss sez no)
20:21 twork_ aha! duh, just now i see the line re. wheezy.  thanks.

20:25 wryfi_ hey everyone - can somebody help me figure out how to handle formulas across multiple environments?

20:27 wryfi_ suggests specifying the branch every time the formula is imported
20:27 babilen Use a separate master per environment and reference your environment gitfs and then normal "master" formulas

20:40 adelcast mnn, does anyone know when is the beacon config validated?
20:40 adelcast (function validate)
20:40 wryfi_ does anyone know how to specify the branch for an include using the pyobjects renderer?
20:40 adelcast I am writing a new beacon, would have thought that the validate function would be called on load
20:40 wryfi_ for jinja, you can do 'include: master: foo'
20:40 wryfi_ but include('master:foo') doesn't seem to work with pyobjects
