00:45 ZachLanich Oh hi!. There is life in here lol
00:46 ZachLanich Ok, I just set up the latest salt demo with vagrant, and I'm having the ever popular issue of my minions' connections dropping off like crazy. Usually only of the 2 minions responds to test.ping, then every once in a while, they'll both respond, then sometimes they switch, etc. Any up to date advice on this?

01:26 ZachLanich I'm on a mac, but the Vagrant demo installs Ubuntu 14.04 on the VMs
01:27 ZachLanich Latest version of salt and ZMQ 4.0.5
01:28 ZachLanich Which blows my mind, since these issues have been occurring for years and it seems no one has found an "AHA!" explanation for the issue lol
01:28 flowstate joined #salt
01:31 ZachLanich I'm also getting a "minion2: Data failed to compile" with the first state example in the demo (http://dp.wecreate.com/8un4), which what seems like a perfectly indented sls file! I'm having a horrible time getting anything to work in this demo.

01:46 XenophonF ZachLanich: it's difficult to guess at what your problem might be without seeing the sls files in question
01:46 XenophonF it could be something as simple as tabs vs spaces
01:46 ZachLanich Very simple. Here: http://dp.wecreate.com/1kD3w
01:47 ZachLanich I've done everything in the demo tutorial verbatim so far, but having a ton of issues.
01:48 XenophonF i'm not familiar with the demo tutorial, but is that sls file in the proper location on your salt master?
01:49 XenophonF e.g., i'm on freebsd, using the py27-salt package, so that file would live in /usr/local/etc/salt/states/ by default
01:49 ZachLanich Yea. It's in /srv/salt where the others are, as per the tutorial instructions: http://dp.wecreate.com/QeLq - It's mapped to my local drive via Vagrant too, so it seems I'm fine.
01:50 debian112 joined #salt
01:50 ZachLanich I think FreeBSD is the one weird acception
01:50 XenophonF ok so on your minion, what happens if you run "salt-call state.apply nettools test=True"?
01:51 ZachLanich Let's see...
01:52 XenophonF what should happen is that it shows a "install_network_packages" pkg.installed state that would have installed a bunch of stuff (assuming those packages aren't already installed)
01:54 ZachLanich Right. It's still waiting/hanging...: http://dp.wecreate.com/15xvm
01:54 ZachLanich I had a memory exception earlier and enabled swap to 1GB btw.

03:04 ZachLanich So I figured out the compile error. Vagrant/VB doesn't remap directories if you reboot from inside the VM instead of using Vagrant to do so. I got that command to run and used some sensible KeepAlive commands, but we'll see if the minions keep dropping off still.

22:39 msdogado Hi guys! I am playing around with reactors and beacons for two days now. working fine so far. I am able to redeploy ssh key files and config changes and stuff. I am doing the same with permanent iptables rules which works fine aswell. Everything is done using inotify beacons. But when it comes to the running rules it seems to reach the limit as /proc/net/ip_tables_names is not a file inotify will
22:39 msdogado not realize changes in there
22:39 msdogado Any ideas how to archieve this?
22:40 msdogado I would like to reload the running iptables rules after someone adds or removes a rule
22:40 msdogado like: iptables -I INPUT -s $someip -j ACCEPT
22:42 alexhayes joined #salt
22:51 whytewolf well, inotify wouldn't work under /proc since it isn't a real "filesystem" but a kernel namespace presented as a filesystem. your best bet would be to write a custom beacon.
22:52 msdogado hmm something like checking for the timestamp of /proc/net/ip_tables_names ... seems like i have to dive into custom beacons then.. feared that ;) thanks for you feedback!

23:54 whytewolf humm. you know IIRC ip_tablees_names has 0 to do with the current set of running rules. and is actually about what current tables exist. so unless you are adding a table with every rule. that file would almost never change anyway
