06:56 cbiel hi there, i have little question: I found that when I change the state in saltstack (e.g. remove a pkg.installed from a state.sls) the packages gets not removed on the server. is this correct behavoir? wouldnt it be good if saltstack would remove the things from the server that i removed from the .sls?
06:57 giany I'm using Orchestrate with cloud.profile, basically I want to deploy a server with this..problem is that not sure what tgt to set as obviously that target does not exist yet..my orch sls : http://pastebin.com/NChuDHpc

07:32 sagerdearia joined #salt
07:32 scc With master and minion(s) both running the agent and zt interface locally, I am seeing some strange behaviour: network connectivity is there, minions connect and salt-key registers there presence. But they do not reply to ping.
07:32 scc Is salt sensitive to issues with network connectivity?

12:50 theanalyst babilen, I'm pretty sure that this command succeeded an hour back after which I pulled a custom formula or so
12:50 babilen "salt '*' pkg.list_upgrades" -- does that work?
12:50 babilen A lot can happen in an hour :)
12:50 theanalyst babilen, nothing in pkg namespace seems available
12:51 theanalyst salt \* sys.doc | grep pkg gives me nothing with pkg.*
12:51 theanalyst I'm having something in pkg_resource and state.pkg

12:52 babilen What does "grains.get os_family" return? Is 'zypper' available on the minion?
12:52 theanalyst babilen, yes zypper is available , os_faimly : Suse
12:53 babilen Could you reload your minion?
12:53 babilen *restart
12:54 theanalyst babilen, tried that, no luck :/
12:54 babilen Anything in the minion logs if you start it with "-ldebug" -- Which version of the minion is that?
12:55 theanalyst babilen, can some module I install override pkg. if so how can I find that?
12:55 babilen I haven't actually used zypper, but the module should load if those three conditions are given
12:55 babilen (rpm Python module/zypper available and os_family = 'Suse')
12:56 manji does the munion log say anything important ?
12:56 manji minion*
12:57 manji also, have you tried installing a package manually ?
12:57 manji just a quick check that nothing is corrupted on the package manager side
12:58 theanalyst manji, yeah zypper/ package manager is working fine..

12:59 babilen I'm not surprised that the state module isn't loading, but the execution module should.
12:59 babilen And again: Which version is this?
13:00 theanalyst trying salt "*" pkg.install is also failing similarly, 2015.8.10
13:00 babilen What does "salt-minion -ldebug" report? (on the minion, after stopping the minion there)

13:01 babilen What's the exact error message in that case?

13:21 babilen theanalyst: You could edit zypper.py in you salt install and comment the bits in __virtual__ so that __virtualname__ is returned directly .. that way it must be loaded.
13:21 babilen theanalyst: Could it be that you have an old minion process running?
13:21 phx if i create an ext_pillar, in what environment will those pillars be in?

17:17 fredrick Driving me nuts.  I run the salt-cloud --list-locations and it show the regions.

21:43 davez0r Hi all
21:44 davez0r Just had a question (as I'm in learning phases for salt and loving it so far)
21:46 davez0r I have a base config set up for all servers to install apache and tcpdump, add some users and their ssh keys and all of this works fine.  I also set up a pillar to match any hostnames containing '*sql' (i have client1, client2, clientsql) but it seems that 'clientsql' will not run the pillar configuration and install mariadb-server, but it does run through and install apache, tcpdump, add users from base, etc
21:46 davez0r Anyone care to point me in the right direction of what I may be doing wrong?  # salt '*sql' pillar.items shows me the items I've added -- it just won't install mariadb or anything I tell it to
21:47 UtahDave pillar data is for key value pairs only.  You can't put salt states in pillar
21:48 davez0r so basically it's *JUST* for data?
21:53 sjmh davez0r : yes, pillar is just data.
21:53 sjmh it's data that's defined on the master about a minion.
21:54 davez0r ok, this makes more sense.  I thought it was more of a "targeted" manager, in the sense that "these packages should only be installed on matching minions" type deal
21:54 davez0r Thank you! :)
21:58 jaybocc2 joined #salt
22:00 fannet joined #salt
22:00 sjmh davez0r : you could use it like that, but it's just data.. so you define that data in pillar, and then the states can use that pillar data to figure out dynamically which packages to install on the host..

22:50 Taz hey guys, im trying to run the cloud.create runner (https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/runners/all/salt.runners.cloud.html#salt.runners.cloud.create) using orchestration (https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/orchestrate/orchestrate_runner.html#orchestrate-runner). I can run other runner functions without parameters/args but i cant seem to pass the right number of arguments to cloud.create from orchestration
22:52 Taz example: http://pastebin.com/vKSQguv7
22:52 cyborg-one joined #salt
22:55 iggy pastebin doesn't like people who use adblockers
22:56 iggy fwiw, the args can be very tricky for orchestrate and runners
22:59 Taz yea, i cant seem to figure out how to pass args in the right way
23:00 sp0097 joined #salt
23:01 iggy I think you would put instance and profile under an arg key
23:01 teryx510 joined #salt
23:01 Taz i tried that, ill paste output in a sec
23:01 Taz in the docs they only list kwargs
23:02 Taz http://pastebin.com/kWGqeceq
23:02 iggy protip: gist supports multiple files per paste
23:03 ninjada joined #salt
23:03 Taz ok ill use gist
23:04 Taz https://gist.github.com/tazaki/41fb258c023f4d5bf9d1273075cf1695
23:04 Taz that is pretty neat
23:05 Taz wow im still using list images
23:06 Taz updated
23:08 Taz list images works but it doesnt take any args
23:10 iggy so you're passing the cloud.create args to the runner module
23:10 iggy there's going to have to be a certain amount of nesting here
23:10 Taz yea in order to duplicate my salt-cloud command i run: salt-cloud -p os_sm_u14 test1
23:11 Taz then i would need to pass in openstack as my provider, test1 as my instance, and os_sm_u14 as my profile
23:11 Taz two args and 1 kwarg if i understand right
23:11 Taz since it wants provider and instance as the first two args
23:12 iggy I commented, try something like that
23:14 iggy you may need to convert some of that to lists
23:14 Taz updated, conflicting kwargs
23:15 Taz omg i think i got it
23:15 iggy indent the provider line and down another 2 spaces
23:15 JoeJulian Huh.. I wonder why I can't run the integration tests under sudo.
23:15 Taz iggy: It seems to work when i change the first kwarg to args
23:16 Taz but it doesnt wait, it just triggers and drops out
23:16 necronian left #salt
23:16 Taz oh it errors on size
23:17 Taz updated gist
23:18 iggy but size isn't required when you run the runner directly?
23:19 iggy i.e. `salt-run cloud.create openstack test1 profile=os_sm_u14` works?
23:20 Taz no the profile has the size and such in it
23:20 Taz so just passing the profile works when i do salt-cloud
23:21 iggy salt-cloud is different than the runner
23:23 Taz ahh your right
23:23 Taz https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/runners/all/salt.runners.cloud.html#salt.runners.cloud.create
23:23 Taz does not take a profile
23:24 Taz maybe it would work with https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/runners/all/salt.runners.cloud.html#salt.runners.cloud.action
