02:53 bluethundr hey guys.. I'm trying to get an apache salt state working, but getting an error. Can someone take a look at this gist and help figure out what's wrong?

03:00 hemebond bluethundr: Do you have a top.sls file?
03:01 hemebond You have no base directory/environment?
03:01 hemebond Why are your file_roots defined on the minion too? Are you using masterless or something?
03:02 hemebond Nesting a file root inside another file root probably isn't a good idea.
03:02 hemebond I see your top.sls now.
03:03 hemebond Oh.
03:03 bluethundr oh ok
03:03 bluethundr cool
03:03 bluethundr not running masteless
03:03 bluethundr masterless
03:03 hemebond The state looks fine.
03:04 bluethundr do I need a base environment defined, if I'm only interested in defining prod/dev environments?
03:04 bluethundr ok
03:04 hemebond Not sure if you _must_ have a base environment.
03:04 bluethundr ok
03:05 bluethundr don't think so.. another salt setup we have that works doesn't have base environment setup
03:05 hemebond Oh I see you've used a different state format for the file...
03:05 bluethundr ok
03:05 hemebond I'm just trying to find the docs for that since I don't use it.
03:06 bluethundr cool thanks
03:06 hemebond It's probably fine but I just don't know.
03:06 hemebond Yeah, it's fine.
03:06 bluethundr hmm ok
03:06 hemebond I can't see anything wrong.
03:07 bluethundr I restarted both services, still can't get it working
03:07 bluethundr can't see anything wrong either :(
03:07 hemebond What happens if you do a show_top?
03:07 bluethundr how do I do that?
03:08 hemebond salt minion state.show_top
03:09 bluethundr k thanks
03:09 bluethundr one sec I'll try
03:09 bluethundr I get nothing back
03:09 bluethundr no error
03:09 bluethundr salt.jokefire.com:     ----------
03:09 hemebond Ah
03:10 hemebond Then your top file isn't applying properly.
03:10 nineteen joined #salt
03:10 bluethundr hmm seems so
03:10 bluethundr wonder why
03:10 bluethundr I checked the debug output of that command I'm trying to run
03:10 hemebond Remove those extra file_root entries for each environment.
03:10 bluethundr nothing interesting hter
03:10 bluethundr there
03:10 bluethundr ok
03:10 bluethundr I'll give that a try
03:10 bluethundr brb
03:11 hemebond Having them nested like that is not good.
03:11 hemebond (from an aesthetic point of view)
03:11 bluethundr ok
03:15 bluethundr ok make the changes and restarted the services
03:15 bluethundr https://gist.github.com/bluethundr/099c99cc968e723030ca4bbed8b0187b
03:15 bluethundr got the same result, unfortunately
03:16 hemebond Does dev/ have a top.sls?
03:16 hemebond /srv/salt/dev/top.sls?
03:16 bluethundr no, but I'm not trying to use that right now
03:16 hemebond Wait, what?
03:16 bluethundr I got rid of dev from the config
03:16 hemebond Did you remove /srv/salt/prod/ from file_roots entirely?
03:16 bluethundr I'm just trying to use the prod enironment
03:16 bluethundr no
03:16 hemebond Sorry, I was talking about the /services and /states directories.
03:16 bluethundr oh wwait sorry I did
03:16 bluethundr yeah let me correct that
03:17 bluethundr one sec
03:17 hemebond If you have /srv/salt/dev/apache.sls and /srv/salt/dev/services/apache.sls and /srv/salt/dev/states/apache.sls you've got an interesting set of fallthrough for each state you want to apply.
03:18 bluethundr ok
03:18 hemebond And means you can't have a state and service with the same name.
03:21 bluethundr ok
03:21 bluethundr so maybe I should remove the state and service directories?
03:21 bluethundr and just use /srv/salt/dev ?
03:21 hemebond Not if that's how you're going to separate your states.
03:21 bluethundr ok
03:21 hemebond I don't know how you're going to use those directories.
03:22 bluethundr yeah I don't know how to separate states yet
03:22 hemebond They don't need to be in your file_roots.
03:22 hemebond You can refer to them as services.blah
03:23 |aaron joined #salt
03:24 bluethundr ok cool
03:26 |aaron im getting the strangest error. i have these simple file.managed states with watch_in set to a service (https://paste.ee/p/FCOls). when i run the state the files get crated but i yet these errors 'Unable to manage file: [Errno 38] Function not implemented: <path to file>'
03:26 |aaron ive tried using watch: instead of watch_in: and i get the sam error
03:27 hemebond |aaron: Is service.running enough?
03:27 bluethundr but this is my latest attempt.. I tried simplifing things down
03:27 bluethundr https://gist.github.com/bluethundr/dd4f9047d641020cbbff36041fc5118f
03:27 hemebond Do you not need service.running: [] ?
03:27 hemebond Or even service:\n  - running
03:28 |aaron hemebond: i think it is enough actually. i changed it to : [] and i still get the error
03:28 hemebond bluethundr: So your /dev/top.sls contains what prod/top.sls contained?
03:28 bluethundr yep
03:28 bluethundr but modified for dev
03:28 bluethundr I can show you
03:28 bluethundr one sec
03:29 |aaron also the error is in 'Function: file.managed' the service.running state fails too but due to the failed requisitie
03:29 |aaron requisite
03:29 hemebond |aaron: I think you still need it.
03:29 |aaron hemebond ok i put it in
03:29 bluethundr https://gist.github.com/bluethundr/4d28677607842424acb93cb0d1b65867
03:29 hemebond Might not be the cause of your problem but definitely required.
03:29 hemebond I'm wrong.
03:29 hemebond Not required apparently.
03:29 hemebond Somehow.
03:29 |aaron yeah i was gonna say haha ive been doing it like this
03:29 hemebond Assuming this second example on the docs is correct.
03:30 |aaron i swear the yaml is just magic sometimes..
03:30 hemebond Ah it's only if it's the only line for that state.
03:30 nineteen joined #salt
03:30 hemebond I guess it creates an empty dict key.
03:30 edrocks joined #salt
03:31 |aaron i feel like the error im getting sounds like a bug though?
03:32 hemebond |aaron: Why have you duplicated the file paths in the state ID and the name parameter?
03:32 |aaron hemebond: i was just trying to make it work
03:33 |aaron it doesnt help of course
03:33 hemebond Ah
03:33 |aaron id like to just remove the name parameter
03:33 hemebond bluethundr: I really can't see anything wrong there.
03:33 bluethundr hmm bummer
03:33 bluethundr ok
03:33 |aaron i should have done that before i posted i forgot i put that in there haha
03:33 bluethundr neither can I
03:33 bluethundr looks like it should be working to me
03:34 |aaron i also tried changing the top level key to not be dynamic, just a static string, but that doesnt help either
03:34 hemebond bluethundr: What if you put the minion name in quotes when running the command?
03:34 bluethundr hmmm worth a try
03:34 bluethundr one sec
03:35 bluethundr nope.. no change
03:36 hemebond bluethundr: I'm just looking something up.
03:36 bluethundr thank you
03:36 |aaron its so weird bc the file even gets created lol..
03:39 |aaron i can actually take out the watch entirely and i still get the errors on the file managed state
03:39 hemebond bluethundr: I'm trying to find a way to check the master config from the salt master.
03:39 bluethundr awesome
03:39 hemebond |aaron: Yeah, the problem is with the file.
03:39 hemebond That's why I wondered if the path was causing issues.
03:40 nineteen joined #salt
03:40 |aaron hemebond: its so bizarre. i just tried taking the hyphen out of the path, no dice. i also tried using 'contents' instead of 'cotents_pillar' but always the same error
03:40 hemebond |aaron: Tried restarting the minion?
03:40 |aaron oh no good idea let me try that
03:40 |aaron oh i should check the logs too duh
03:41 hemebond I had a problem recently where states weren't applying and restarting fixed it.
03:41 hemebond First time I'd ever had that problem.
03:41 bluethundr hmm ok
03:42 hemebond bluethundr: I haven't found a command or option for it yet.
03:42 bluethundr ok
03:42 hemebond I think if you run the master in the foreground with debug logging it will show you the config
03:42 hemebond salt-master --log-level=debug
03:43 hemebond (stop the service first)
03:43 bluethundr kewl .. one sec
03:45 bluethundr I'm seeing this in the debug output
03:45 bluethundr https://gist.github.com/bluethundr/4c9f6823a7f3e8640a9e977d4ab8ced3
03:46 hemebond yip, that's just your error.
03:46 bluethundr cool
03:46 hemebond What about when it's starting up?
03:46 hemebond Does it show you the config? I'll try it now.
03:47 bluethundr let me try
03:47 hemebond It doesn't.
03:47 hemebond Bah!
03:47 |aaron yeah restarting didnt help, nothing useful in the logs
03:47 hemebond I can see the master config via my minions, but it's not default.
03:47 |aaron nothing in the debug output but the same error
03:47 iggy what's the command being run? What's the exact error output (helpful to just paste the whole thing)
03:48 bluethundr yeah same here
03:48 hemebond bluethundr: I suppose you could paste your master config into a Yaml parser to make sure it's rendered properly.
03:48 bluethundr ok yeah
03:48 bluethundr I'll try that
03:48 bluethundr I like to use this one
03:49 bluethundr http://yaml-online-parser.appspot.com/
03:49 bluethundr which one do you like to use?
03:49 hemebond That's the one I use.
03:49 bluethundr nice
03:49 hemebond You could also do it via a Python console.
03:49 hemebond Which might be ...
03:49 hemebond Ah
03:49 hemebond That's how I view the master config; via a console.
03:50 hemebond import salt.config; salt.config.master_config('/etc/salt/master')
03:50 bluethundr don't know how to use a python console
03:50 hemebond Just type "python" into a terminal.
03:50 bluethundr just trying to learn python.. I'm a noob with that
03:50 bluethundr ok
03:50 bluethundr oh yeah
03:50 bluethundr that
03:50 |aaron huh so theres a reference to the error im getting at the bottom of this blog post https://junaid18183.wordpress.com/2013/11/08/installing-salt-master-and-salt-minion-agent-on-centos-6/ guys english isnt so good though.. he mentions lxc too and this minion is an lxc container... idk about this /dev/shm business though?
03:51 hemebond |aaron: Oooh, it's not just a regular server?
03:51 hemebond Are you trying to write somewhere restricted?
03:51 |aaron hemebond: no its an lxc container
03:51 |aaron actually wait
03:51 |aaron what the hell am i talkiing aout, its not an lxc container
03:51 |aaron all my other servers are, this is the proxmox host
03:51 hemebond lol
03:51 |aaron sorry haha its been a long day
03:52 |aaron i mean its in the /etc folder yeah
03:52 iggy |aaron: what's the command being run? What's the exact error output (helpful to just paste the whole thing)
03:52 hemebond iggy: https://paste.ee/p/FCOls
03:52 |aaron errors https://paste.ee/p/PbXnj
03:53 iggy that's the sls
03:53 hemebond |aaron: update with the commasnd and error
03:53 iggy not a command or error
03:53 |aaron the command im running is salt 'minion' state.highstate
03:53 hemebond |aaron: Does the parent directory already exist?
03:53 |aaron hemebond: yes. the files even get created
03:53 hemebond Is it a regular file system?
03:53 hemebond Oh, interesting.
03:54 bluethundr this is all I have in my master and minion configs
03:54 bluethundr https://gist.github.com/bluethundr/40f667b8952f50a4d0d6f1dcc609b56d
03:54 |aaron yeah i think so? its a subdir of /etc on a proxmox host
03:54 hemebond Not running salt-minion as some non-root account, right?
03:54 |aaron no standard bootstrap install
03:54 |aaron everything else has worked fine on this minion
03:55 hemebond bluethundr: Do you have salt-minion installed on your Salt master?
03:55 bluethundr yes I do
03:55 bluethundr it's runing
03:55 bluethundr so is the salt master
03:55 iggy |aaron: mount | grep shm
03:55 hemebond What if you do salt 'salt.jokefire.com' test.ping?
03:55 iggy shows rw ?
03:55 |aaron iggy, on the minion yes it does "tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)"
03:56 bluethundr that works
03:56 bluethundr salt.jokefire.com:     True
03:56 hemebond bluethundr: What if you re-add the base environment?
03:56 hemebond and point it to a /srv/salt/base/ directory
03:56 bluethundr ok, I can give that a try
03:56 hemebond Just so we have a default setup.
03:56 |aaron iggy, btw i remove the extraneous name declarations, the watches and the service.running part altogether to simplify things, still get the error https://paste.ee/p/3PK8j
03:57 hemebond bluethundr: btw, my setup has /srv/salt/(formulas|states|pillars)/
03:57 hemebond and /srv/salt/states/(base|env1|env2)
03:58 iggy |aaron: you said the files get created, is everything else about them correct? (perms, mode, user, group, etc)
03:59 |aaron iggy: yes as far as i can tell. for some reason openssl cant read the private key but i think thats unrelated
04:00 nineteen joined #salt
04:00 |aaron iggy, sorry i should have mentioend this earlier, the states succeed if the files already exist. so i only get the error the first time i run the states
04:00 |aaron still problematic of course because i need to restart the service based on them getting modified and that doesnt happen due to the error
04:01 bluethundr hemebond: oh ok..
04:01 bluethundr that's interesting
04:01 bluethundr I haven't gotten into formulas or pillars yet
04:01 bluethundr plan to soon tho
04:02 iggy |aaron: what about `mount | grep pve` ?
04:03 iggy bluethundr: it's kind of odd for users to be going all out with salt environments before pillars
04:04 |aaron iggy: oh yeah its some kind of weird filesystem. ' /dev/fuse on /etc/pve type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other)' i had no idea
04:04 iggy bingo!
04:05 bluethundr iggy: oh ok
04:05 * iggy pours a nice stiff drink as a reward
04:05 |aaron does that makes sense to you? idk what fuse is but its still rw?
04:05 |aaron hahaha
04:05 hemebond |aaron: Remote volume I think.
04:05 iggy yeah, sounds like whatever that filesystem is doesn't implement some feature that salt is relying on
04:05 |aaron ahh
04:05 iggy https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Proxmox_Cluster_File_System_(pmxcfs)
04:06 iggy those guys reinvent everything round they see
04:06 |aaron i see. so is there a way to gag that error so i can still use a requisite here?
04:06 iggy nein!
04:06 iggy file.touch it before the file.manage?
04:06 |aaron ahh clever let me try that
04:07 iggy that's going to show up as a change _every_ highstate though
04:09 iggy bluethundr: I mention that because environments are a feature that many people shy away from because of some it's quirks
04:09 bluethundr iggy: interesting
04:10 hemebond Yeah. e.g., your prod.sls will apply apache to every minion; regardless of what "environment" it's in.
04:10 hemebond You'd have to configure the environment in the minion config to isolate it.
04:10 stooj_ joined #salt
04:11 |aaron iggy, bummer, touch works but then i still get the error from file.managed
04:11 nineteen joined #salt
04:13 iggy |aaron: probably some other stuff going on in the background
04:13 iggy (like an unlink, link cycle or something)
04:15 iggy you could always cmd.run it...
04:15 * iggy runs far, far away
04:19 |aaron hahaha
04:19 nineteen joined #salt
04:20 |aaron iggy, can i use unless or onlyif somehow so it only runs if the file doesnt exist?
04:25 iggy so what runs?
04:26 iggy wait, it works if the file _doesn't_ exist already?
04:26 |aaron well it creates the file but i get the error
04:26 |aaron so the requisites fail
04:26 |aaron but im trying to get the cmd.run thing to work now.
04:27 iggy yeah, I'm not sure how an unless is going to help then
04:27 |aaron um cant i create the file with cmd.run somehow? the problem is the contents in my pillar though
04:28 |aaron maybe a jinja template for an .sh that reads the pillar and embeds the content into a variable or something then writes that to file? idk this is hacky haha
04:29 nineteen joined #salt
04:32 iggy write it to a tmp file, cp to dest (possibly with cmd.run if salt is still doing weird stuff), then rm tmp file
04:32 iggy ?
04:39 nineteen joined #salt
04:49 nineteen joined #salt
04:57 |aaron iggy: ahhh right of course thanks
04:59 iggy obviously not ideal, but should hold you over until you file a ticket with proxmox guys and they fix it

11:53 Laogeodritt Always fun banging your head against a broken configuration only to realise the salt-formula you're using is doing something wonky with one of the config lines. Guess I should've given the actual output files a bit more scrutiny, not just my pillars.

15:46 useruoi Hello
15:47 useruoi I'm trying to write a salt module but I don't know how to return that the command failed
15:48 useruoi I mean how to inform that the function failed
15:48 nineteen joined #salt
15:48 useruoi There is some documentation for doing that when writing state modules, but not for simple functions

16:26 iggy return False?
16:26 iggy it depends... I've seen return'ing a dict with an error key, returning False, raise'ing with error messages attached to the exception, etc.

20:09 doug1 Hello, I am trying to use the event reactor to process salt-cloud events but am having a hard time getting it to work.  I'm using salt-master 2016.3.3.  The event reactor will see minion starts but not cloud events like created or destroyed.  After applying https://github.com/saltstack/salt/pull/35855/commits/a662ea53374753337b900a0b18a1824c266c4136 my master now sees cloud events.  However, it doesn't execute any actions that I've specified
