00:56 cetanu hey all... is anyone currently using include directives in their salt config to get their profiles from outside the regular salt tree?
00:57 cetanu and by profiles I mean cloud profiles
00:57 hemebond Salt Cloud profiles and providers configs are usually in the master configuration directory rather than the regular Salt tree.
00:57 hemebond (I'm assuming tree == file_roots)
00:58 hemebond Is there a thing for storing them outside the master config directory?
00:58 cetanu Apparently you can do includes... and salt reads and includes the configs, but it simply never uses the data within
00:58 cetanu it's a bit bizarre
00:59 k_sze[work] joined #salt
00:59 cetanu see here... https://github.com/saltstack/salt/blob/develop/salt/config/__init__.py#L1504
00:59 cetanu You can override the default_include
00:59 cetanu but doing so seems to do nothing at all, even though the files are read and included by salt in the debug log
01:00 cetanu It's just annoying because I'm stuck having to use an unprivileged user, and need to store config outside the regular tree
01:00 hemebond Oh that kind of include.
01:02 cetanu Yeah. Looks like it's just not going to work.
01:02 hemebond Symlinks?
01:02 cetanu Going to have to set fucked permissions on everything. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee.
01:02 cetanu Maybe...
01:02 catpigger joined #salt
01:02 cetanu I'll try symlinks.
01:03 cetanu Yeah symlinks work
01:03 hemebond Have you tried setting default_include in your config?
01:04 cetanu Yeah I set default_include, and it reads the files from the target directory
01:04 cetanu but it appears to not care about the information in the files
01:04 hemebond What about "include"?
01:04 cetanu it says I have no profiles configured
01:04 cetanu tried 'include' also
01:04 cetanu same thing
01:04 cetanu I guess it would work for basic config stuff
01:04 cetanu but not profiles or providers
01:05 hemebond Did you set include as a list?
01:05 cetanu Yep
01:05 cetanu and also tried it as a string
01:06 hemebond Where did you set it?
01:07 cetanu in /etc/salt/master, and also tried in /etc/salt/cloud

01:14 hemebond As long as root can read everything in there it should be fine.
01:14 hemebond Where did you put that line? Same file?
01:16 cetanu http://paste.debian.net/883077/
01:16 cetanu in /etc/salt/cloud
01:16 cetanu it reads the file in
01:16 hemebond I think it has to go into cloud.profile
01:16 hemebond or cloud.provider
01:16 cetanu Oh really...
01:16 cetanu let me try that
01:16 hemebond er, profiles and providers

05:22 cilkay Hello. I have an SLS file with 10 states in it. Is there a way to invoke each state individually via salt-call? I have a masterless minion.
05:23 cilkay E.g. I can do "salt-call --local state.sls pg.init" to invoke all the states that have to do with PostgreSQL, like make sure that PG installed, the daemon is running, users and databases created, etc.
05:24 cilkay How can I invoke just one state within pg.init, say "utility_db"?

05:49 hemebond I don't think you can.
05:52 cilkay I'm building a Debian VM using preseed. In late_command.sh, I invoke "salt-call --local state.sls pg.init" which fails for reasons I don't understand. When the VM is started for the first time, the user and the db that should have been created haven't been.
05:53 cilkay If I get a shell into the VM and invoke that same state, the state will work and the user and db will be created.
05:53 hemebond Uh. I had trouble with the target and stuff. Could it be that?
05:53 hemebond I found preseed to be fickle and annoying.
05:53 cilkay No, I've had this working before.
05:54 cilkay I put a "sleep 120" in late_command.sh to pause execution long enough that I could inspect stuff on the tty4 but that didn't provide anything useful.
05:54 cilkay It doesn't help that there is so much stuff spewed to stdout that I can't go back far enough to see.
05:55 cilkay Ideally, I'd like to be able to sleep after each state but I don't see a way to do that.
05:55 cilkay Failing that, sending the output that is being sent to stdout to a file would work, too.
05:57 cilkay log_file might be useful. I don't know if it works with masterless minions.
05:57 hemebond Can't you just pipe to a file?
05:57 hemebond er
05:57 hemebond Redirect output I mean.
05:58 cilkay I don't know. I've never tried.
05:58 cilkay salt-call --local state.sls pg.init > pg.log worked
05:59 cilkay I'll tried that in late_command.sh and see what happens.
05:59 cilkay I'll try that in late_command.sh and see what happens.
05:59 cilkay It takes about 12 minutes to build an appliance that is ready to go.

06:20 ITmoon Hi guys I have a qn about python client api ...
06:20 hemebond cilkay: Oh, nice catch.
06:20 hemebond Sounds like your preseed scripts are working far better than mine ever have.
06:21 ITmoon where do I download python line for salt.client or salt.config ? 6@:
06:21 cilkay It took a lot of time to get them that way.
06:22 cilkay That the Debian netinstall CD doesn't support https for apt repos is crazy. That's another error I'm seeing in the log. The Node.js repo is https and it's failing to install as a result.
06:22 hemebond ITmoon: "python line for salt.client or salt.config" I don't understand.
06:23 ITmoon Sorry typo .. python libs for salt.client & salt.config
06:23 Straphka I am not clear on the salt release cycle.... When I look at https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/releases/index.html#latest-branch-release I see that the latest is 2016.3.3 but the previous is 2016.3.4
06:24 hemebond ITmoon: It's all in Salt.
06:24 babilen cilkay: You don't need https for Debian repositories -- https://wiki.debian.org/SecureApt
06:24 edrocks joined #salt
06:24 Straphka We need a feature in 2016.3.4 (the pillar env isolation), so I was wondering when to expect that so we do not have to deploy our own repackaged version
06:24 cilkay It's a nodesource.com repo.
06:24 cilkay Not Debian.
06:25 babilen Ah, Node.JS .. well, you can easily install apt-transport-https
06:25 cilkay Yes, I just have to add it to preseed.cfg
06:25 Straphka Can anyone enlighten me?
06:25 babilen But that's the underlying reason why it is not installed by default. There is a discussion about https on debian-devel at the moment, so lets see what comes out of that
06:26 hemebond Straphka: I think there is a release candidate out now so it should be too far away.

08:10 ni638629 ok is there a default dir where salt stores msgpack-python ?
08:10 hemebond It depends entirely on the operating system.
08:10 AndreasLutro salt doesn't store its dependencies, it just asks your package manager to install them
08:11 ni638629 ok likely then the default python has changed after the salt install hence import salt.config can't find libs like tornado & msgpack

11:54 manji I have this jinja thingie here:
11:54 manji {%- set project=pillar.get('{0}'.format(project_name), 'projects:{0}'.format(project_name)) %}
11:54 manji so one would expect project to be a dict after that
11:55 manji but the actual value is
11:55 manji the value that it is assigned is 'projects:test'
11:55 manji and is a string obviously
11:56 impi joined #salt
11:56 manji if I do a pillar.get from the commandline
11:56 manji everything is in order
11:57 manji any thoughts?
12:01 s_kunk joined #salt
12:01 babilen manji: Could you give an example of "project_name" ?
12:02 manji sure
12:02 babilen I believe that you are looking for salt['pillar.get'] in lieu of pillar.get .. but lets see
12:02 steffo left #salt
12:02 onlyanegg joined #salt
12:03 manji http://pastebin.centos.org/56031/
12:04 manji there are keys with dashes further down, bit they are all within double quotes
12:04 babilen And project_name would therefore be "plfr.play.int" ?
12:05 manji no project_name is play
12:05 manji so it is projects:play
12:05 s_kunk joined #salt
12:05 manji plfr.play.int is the minion name
12:05 babilen That doesn't work with pillar.get (you can't lookup nested values) and you want, as suspected, salt['pillar.get'] in that case
12:05 manji I tried it as well :(
12:06 manji actually it was what I initially had
12:07 manji so I am trying to run something simple like
12:08 manji
12:08 manji /tmp/{{project_name}}:
12:08 manji file.managed:
12:08 manji - contents: {{project}}
12:08 manji the result is:
12:08 manji cat /tmp/play
12:08 babilen I think I need to see a more complete example of what you are doing and the problems that arise when you do
12:08 manji projects:play
12:09 manji let me check if I don't use a default value
12:09 manji if it will work
12:09 babilen But that looks alright .. it can't find "play" in pillars and therefore uses 'projects:play' (the string) as default value
12:09 babilen (as you coded it)
12:10 manji this one works as expected:
12:10 manji {%- set project= salt['pillar.get']('projects:{0}'.format(project_name)) %}
12:10 manji
12:10 manji (no fallback)
12:10 babilen Your call looks like: {%- set project=pillar.get('play', 'projects:play') %}
12:10 manji yep
12:11 babilen So it tries to lookup "play" in pillars, which it can't find and then uses 'projects:play' as fallback
12:11 babilen If you want to use the value of the pillar lookup as fallback you'll have to look it up!
12:12 babilen salt['pillar.get']('{0}'.format(project_name), salt['pillar.get']('projects:{0}'.format(project_name)) %}
12:12 manji damn I was afraind it would get to this
12:12 manji afraid*
12:12 babilen But then .. why don't you know if it is 'play' or 'projects:play' ?
12:13 manji I am trying to be backwards compatible with an older design
12:13 manji and then yes, merge everthing and go on
12:13 babilen .get() takes two arguments: 1. The key to lookup and 2. The value to use if that key can't be found (i.e. *not* an alternative key)
12:14 manji ok that indeed makes sense
12:14 manji and damn:p
12:14 manji thanx babilen
12:14 manji I go make my jinja even less readable now :p
12:14 babilen Hoo-bloody-fucking-ray!
12:15 manji hahahah
12:15 babilen So .. you used to have the project name as top-level key in the pillar beforehand?
12:15 manji yes
12:15 manji it was a bad design
12:16 Miouge joined #salt
12:16 babilen Is that a list of projects you know?
12:16 manji I gave a "projects" grain
12:16 manji a list
12:16 babilen hmmm
12:16 manji so in a state
12:17 manji I used to iterate grains['projects']
12:17 manji and then do pillar['project_name']
12:17 babilen Just another approach .. but are you familiar with the map.jinja pattern for foo_settings that is being used in formulas?
12:18 manji kind of, I don't use formulas generaly
12:18 mswart joined #salt
12:18 manji but go on
12:18 babilen The idea would be to hand over *one* datastructure that contains all settings, but to generate that structure from defaults and pillar data in map.jinja .. I was wondering if you could automagically populate projects:... by merging in the result of pillar lookups there
12:19 babilen You would then just reference foo_settings.projects.bar in your SLS and there would be no 'play' at the top-level
12:19 babilen I don't have it all coded, but that might be an idea .. it would be a departure from your current design though
12:20 manji well with the updated design
12:20 manji I have a pillad called projects
12:20 manji and all projects, project_data
12:20 manji are in there
12:20 manji it is pretty much what you said, differently implemented
12:21 manji so I am populating everthing under the 'projects' key
12:21 babilen https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/template-formula/blob/master/template/map.jinja -- and then you could iterate over projects and merge settings in one by one
12:23 manji oh I see what you mean
12:23 manji yes that would work for the transition yes :)
12:23 manji thanks :)
12:23 babilen You would then reference template (I'd prefer 'template_settings') as in https://github.com/saltstack-formulas/template-formula/blob/master/template/install.sls#L4 in your states
12:24 mswart joined #salt
12:24 manji and hide all the unreadable stuff in map.jinja
12:24 babilen That pattern allows for three things: 1. Single datastructure for everything in your SLS 2. Default values in a single place 3. Backwards compatibility to old pillars
12:24 babilen (and all the ugly bits are hidden away)
12:26 manji damn no matter how we try to keep things simple
12:26 manji it is hopepless

13:13 mikecmpbll i just see the minion name in the test.ping output.
13:14 manji the master is not connecting
13:14 manji it is not a real ping
13:15 manji mikecmpbll, minions connect to the master

13:16 manji mikecmpbll, if what I said is correct, you can just netstat

13:46 XenophonF (or raet or whatever your transport is)

13:48 XenophonF looks like s3fs doesn't have any external dependencies
13:48 XenophonF https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/file_server/all/salt.fileserver.s3fs.html
13:48 XenophonF no - i mean, inside your salt master, on which file system does /var/cache/salt/master live?
13:48 XenophonF like, on my master, /var is on the same file system as root
13:48 XenophonF but i've got systems where /var gets mounted on a separate file system
13:49 XenophonF "no space left on device" could mean that /var or /tmp or /var/tmp are full
13:49 mike25de XenophonF: same FS
13:49 XenophonF what about /tmp?
13:49 XenophonF tmp dirs sometimes get mounted as memory-backed file systems
13:50 mike25de is the salt master cache ...
13:50 XenophonF do `df -h`
13:50 mike25de this one /var/cache/salt/master/s3cache

13:51 mike25de i need a bigger salt master :)
13:51 XenophonF that's the s3 cache directory
13:51 XenophonF so there should be a subdir for each environment, e.g., base
13:51 XenophonF and each environment should have a subdir for each bucket, e.g., base/mybucket
13:52 mike25de XenophonF: so mybucket/base/file is not enough?
13:52 mike25de i do not have.... only the base env

14:02 XenophonF replace all of that with two cmd.script states, with one running the check script and the other watching the check script's state for changes
14:04 XenophonF although to be honest, I'd probably put everything into one script - the check, the deploy, the update - and just call that using cmd.script
14:04 XenophonF to me it doesn't make sense to recapitulate a bunch of logic in salt that could more easily be put into a single shell script, since you're using shell scripts anyway

17:37 bluenemo hi guys. I'm trying to setup a minion to have access to all mine data. However it only works for the master: http://paste.debian.net/hidden/8611c5db/
17:39 bluenemo interestingly, using salt 'util*' mine.get '*' grains.items  does not show anything as configured - for the server that doesnt see the mine data in the state, I can show it on the command line.
17:39 bluenemo So  salt 'bloo*' mine.get '*' grains.items  shows something but I cant seem to use the data in a state - while a minion that shows to have nothing on the cli can use the data - I'm expecting some cache issue?

17:54 zhihan Hi
17:55 zhihan I have a question, does salt use raet by default or use zmq by default?
17:55 bluethundr joined #salt
17:55 bluethundr hey all... how do I specify the AWS environment I want to hit using the salt command line?
17:55 bluethundr I tried this
17:55 bluethundr salt '*' boto_vpc.get_id dlab --saltenv=dlab
17:55 bluethundr but I get this error
17:55 bluethundr salt: error: no such option: --saltenv
17:56 bluethundr tried a couple other options too that didn't work

18:30 Llmiseyhaa I'm getting lots of warnings re the lock file on the gitfs and I'm not using a shared NFS storage for the cache, so I'm a bit confused as to how it's happening that they're seeing each others' lock files

18:42 Llmiseyhaa nope.  Just started each of them up.
18:42 Llmiseyhaa I've been using a non-redundant salt rig for a bit and decided to finally make it a redundant job
