00:41 mattp_ how is a minions environment dictated by the top file?
00:42 mattp_ i want to use gitfs. i have a single top file
00:42 mattp_ what dictates this minion = this branch

00:55 buu mattp_: the top file applies states to minions via matching patterns
00:55 jas02 joined #salt
00:56 mattp_ buu: ok
00:56 mattp_ so how do you dictate environment?
00:56 buu Which part?
00:56 mattp_ i know saltenv parameter, /etc/salt/minion config can do it
00:56 mattp_ buu: im just trying to implement a dev -> staging -> prod flow with gtfs
00:58 buu mattp_: It's the same way you do it with the saltfs server
00:58 buu You specify the git branch as the root
00:59 mattp_ as the root? I dont follow
00:59 whytewolf https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/top.html#multiple-environments
00:59 buu A minion can be pinned to an environment using the environment option in the minion config file.
01:03 mattp_ is that how its done? no dynamic matching?
01:04 mattp_ ahh dynamic matching is done on a subset of each environment
01:05 iggy I would avoid gitfs/environments if at all possible
01:05 iggy but that's just me
01:05 mattp_ The top file is used to assign a minion to an environment unless overridden using the methods described below. The environment in the top file must match valid fileserver environment (a.k.a. saltenv) in order for any states to be applied to that minion. When using the default fileserver backend, environments are defined in file_roots.
01:05 mattp_ iggy: why is that?
01:05 buu mattp_: Right, and in gitfs the environments are automatically pulled in I think
01:05 mattp_ this wording implies the topfile assigns an environment to a minion
01:05 buu Yeah
01:06 iggy people always have issues with the merging
01:06 mattp_ iggy: how else can i handle dev -> prod flows?
01:06 iggy separate masters
01:07 mattp_ that seems.. not ideal
01:08 mattp_ buu: so if you use the /etc/salt/minion config to set the environment how is the top file assigning it?
01:08 iggy well, keep it in mind when you are done pulling your hair out trying to get your current attempt to work
01:09 buu mattp_: The top file is assigning states to minions, where those states live doesn't matter to the topfile
01:09 mattp_ iggy: are all states from all branches merged at all times? I do agree its bizarrely overcomplicated and convoluted
01:10 iggy most people have trouble with the top file merging and the way that the last env does merge all the way through
01:10 iggy I don't know how to words that last idea, but you'll figure out when you run into it
01:11 mattp_ iggy: i believe the first is mitigated by having a separate repo with 1 branch for your topfile
01:13 XenophonF that's the way i do it
01:14 XenophonF base env a/k/a master branch only has the top file in it
01:14 mattp_ iggy: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/top.html#scenario-3-no-environment-specified-top-file-merging-strategy-is-same
01:14 mattp_ does this mitigate your second point?
01:15 iggy I haven't played with it hands on in over a year (that functionality didn't exist then), so I can say for sure

01:17 doorsnsardines Hi everyone, so I'm trying to find a graceful way to write a nginx module, but I'd like to store some of the attributes in a group of pillars (ideally one pillar would be the reverse proxy config for something like jenkins and then I could have that merge with another pillar that is the config for wedav for git). Is there a good way to do multi-line blocks in the pillar config or even better import a block as a string from a file? I'd like to import lo
01:18 mattp_ iggy: if you have completely disjoint masters, how would you handle a promotion flow from dev -> prod?
01:19 iggy each master checks out a branch... you work in dev, then push that to qa (so the qa master gets it), then to prod (which the prod master checks out)
01:21 mattp_ so still use gitfs, just each master has its own base branch overriden to dev/qa/master
01:21 mattp_ no environments at all
01:22 iggy correct
01:22 mattp_ hrmmm
01:22 armyriad joined #salt
01:23 mattp_ ill give a shot to merge_strategy: same, but will keep in mind if i see any wonky behavior your alternative
01:23 mattp_ iggy: buu: thanks
01:25 iggy honestly, I'd like to hear back either way

12:33 Flying_Panda anyone else ran into issues with the dockerng module not playing well with gvfs? seems to have an issue with removing an image which one of the underlying images is used by another container , when the image is started from docker run  we no longer have this issue
12:33 Flying_Panda only happens when started with docker.rng start

19:26 |aaron hm. so im using salt cloud to deploy a CentOS lxc container on a proxmox host. the VM is created ok but the base centos template doesnt have openssh-server installed, so salt-cloud just sits there forever waiting to establish an ssh connection. if i install and enable sshd on the newly created image then the deployment finishes as execpted. whats the right way to do this? should i be using a different container image, or some kind of deploy script or..?
19:43 Neighbour Deploy a VM with the base image, install what you think should be there, and create a new AMI image from that VM to use as a base image for further deployments
19:44 |aaron Neighbour: ah i see what you mean, thanks
19:50 Neighbour (hmm, AMI is for AWS...not sure what proxmox uses, but the principle is the same)
