00:13 whytewolf ipmb: the difference is state.apply can do both highstate and sls if you leave off the state at the end it will do a highstate
00:14 ipmb got it
00:14 ipmb is there a way you can say, "run this state (and any dependencies it has)"?
00:16 whytewolf dependencies should be handled in the files but if you are not doing that you can just salt 'minion' state.apply state1,state2,state3
00:16 whytewolf not sure how well that will be handled.
00:17 whytewolf but anything you are writting to not be run through highstate, should be self relient.
00:17 ipmb handled in the files, how? "includes"?
00:17 whytewolf yeah includes
00:29 writtenoff joined #salt
00:33 dragon788 the nice thing is you can also do "just in time" includes similar to how you can do just in time imports in Python, wrap it with some Jinja and only if you hit the right set of conditions will it pull in the dependencies

16:16 Tanta if the 'my_pillars' key corresponds to a list, you can iterate this data structure

16:20 Tanta contents_pillar is a static operation

17:21 nini hello folks
17:21 nini I'm getting a really unusual error when trying to run a highstate on a minion
17:22 nini 2016-12-21 16:57:20,851 [salt.client      ][DEBUG   ][11829] Passing on saltutil error. This may be an error in saltclient. 'retcode'
17:22 nini I checked /var/log/master and there's no error that goes with it, though.
17:22 nini working on 2016.11.1 on both master and minion
17:23 nini any idea where else I can check for an error message? I ran the highstate with --log-level=debug --state-output=full --state-verbose=True already
17:23 AndreasLutro I'd grep for 'Passing on a' in the salt codebase
17:23 AndreasLutro but it's gonna be tricky in any case
17:23 nini that's a good idea
17:24 AndreasLutro though if it's only DEBUG it's possible that it's not actually a problem
17:24 nini well, I turned on debug because the highstate was just hanging
17:24 nini now I get
17:24 nini us-west-1-lfc-sine-new.dmz:
17:24 nini Minion did not return. [No response]
17:25 nini I *can* ping the minion though

17:27 nini ok
17:27 whytewolf nini: when you say you use debug, full, true was that on the master? on the minion try the same with salt-call
17:28 nini yes, it was on the master
17:28 whytewolf okay. on the minion try salt-call --log-level=debug --state-output=full --state-verbose=True state.apply
17:28 whytewolf which should give you a minions eye perspective of the issue
17:29 nini local:
17:29 nini Data failed to compile:
17:29 nini ----------
17:29 nini The function "state.highstate" is running as PID 17194 and was started at 2016, Dec 21 17:21:04.435156 with jid 20161221172104435156

20:14 bfrog so... I think I understand what happens now
20:14 bfrog salt.minion does something or other, then restarts the minion daemon
20:15 bfrog that seems to just stop my state.highstate command midway... I guess maybe this would better be done via orchestration?
20:15 bfrog like, ensure all the minions are up to date with the minion daemon, wait, then do state.highstate or whatever

20:18 whytewolf orchestration would still have an issue with it

20:22 bfrog I'm just going to I guess disable that salt.minion state like I did before then again
20:22 bfrog I was trying to fix it, but seems like maybe I can just hack that every so often when I need to update the minions

20:56 usher_ help
20:57 usher_ my base only runs on my minion but not my grains from my top.sls file
20:57 usher_ does state.apply only run the base in the top.sls file?
20:57 DEger joined #salt
20:58 usher_ also state.highstate runs successfully from the minion but when I try to run it from the master to the minion it fails
20:59 usher_ it says "minion is not available" from the master

21:04 Sketch sounds like your master has not accepted your minion's keys

21:19 johnkeates hi back, i'm johnkeates
21:19 nini I'm wondering if it's possible to delete keys remotely, preferably using the netapi
21:19 nini lol
21:20 whytewolf nini I do believe that the wheel is allowed through netapi
21:22 whytewolf nini if wheel is you should be able to access these functions https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/wheel/all/salt.wheel.key.html#module-salt.wheel.key
21:22 nini whytewolf: thanks, I'll take a look

22:13 promorphus Hey friends, thought I'd ask here after googling and getting nowhere. Is it possible to make the salt reactor use an environment specific state?
22:13 promorphus So, for example, if the event fires in the 'dev' environment it would use the state ca'
22:14 promorphus *the state called 'build' in the dev environment, but if it calls it in the production environment, it would use the production version of the same state?
