I want to manage my linux system user via salt. But I don't think my users want to create this passwords on a server. How can the user generate the passwords on hert own systems? I need only the right hashed password. So I am Think |

Would anyone be willing to help me out with a macro / environment variable issue? |

Basically, I'm trying to create a formula to manage MySQL accounts on multiple database servers. I'm trying to re-use a macro from a `macro.sls` file, and use environment variables to specify connection settings. However, putting environment files in the state files doesn't work; they have to be present in `macro.sls`, but that's not desired |

hello everyone. Im trying to get the stdout from a custom python script. Any idea how to retrieve that output in the master and assign it to a jinja variable in sls files? Thanks! |
21:27 |
irctc454 |
with cmd.script: |
21:27 |
irctc454 |
it works |
21:28 |
irctc454 |
I mean I can see the output but I dont know how to save the output to a var |
21:28 |
irctc454 |
Any idea anyone? |
21:35 |
sc250024 |
irctc454 You said it works with `cmd.script` ? What's the issue? |
21:35 |
sc250024 |
You're just not sure how to set that into a variable? |

irctc454 |
@sc250024 Im not sure how to set into a var |
21:43 |
irctc454 |
heres the gist: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/028c2af5ae49ae9ab2aadd9b5c80279e |
21:43 |
sc250024 |
I think you should just be able to run... |
21:44 |
irctc454 |
you mean with cmd.run? |
21:44 |
sc250024 |
{%- set myvar = salt['cmd.script']('salt://scripts/getusername.py') -%} |
21:44 |
sc250024 |
You should check this out: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.cmdmod.html |
21:45 |
irctc454 |
Ok thanks alot. Ill try it out |
21:45 |
sc250024 |
Usually when you're wanting to make the output of some command a variable, you want to look at the SaltStack modules available to your rather than the states |
21:45 |
irctc454 |
hmm I see. I didnt know about it |
21:46 |
sc250024 |
irctc454 Same with grains, for example... |
21:47 |
irctc454 |
Ok! |
21:47 |
sc250024 |
{%- set ipv4_address = salt['grains.get']('ipv4:0') -%} |
21:47 |
irctc454 |
Cool! I understand better how it works now |
21:47 |
irctc454 |
Thanks for the tips! :) |
21:47 |
sc250024 |
One last thing, sorry, this tripped me up at first too... |
21:48 |
sc250024 |
If a module doesn't have an argument passed, you should use '()' at the end anyway |
21:48 |
sc250024 |
For example... |
21:48 |
|
wryfi joined #salt |
21:49 |
sc250024 |
Getting the time zone of your minion via the command line is: `salt-call timezone.get_zone` and with a variable in a state it's {%- set time_zone = salt['timezone.get_zone']() -%} |
21:49 |
sc250024 |
That one tripped me up for a while ;) |
21:49 |
irctc454 |
hmmm... If I understand correctly, salt-call is only run on the minions? |
21:50 |
sc250024 |
Yes, I was just showing an example, you could convert that to `salt '*' timezone.get_zone` to return a list of time zones for all minions |
21:50 |
irctc454 |
Because it seems like all commands Im sending from the master is run as root (System in windows) |
21:50 |
sc250024 |
`salt-call` is only via the command line to be used if you're initiating a call from the minion itself |
21:50 |
sc250024 |
Not to be used in formulas |
21:50 |
irctc454 |
Oh ok |
21:51 |
irctc454 |
Well... I learned some stuff haha. Thanks for the tips :) |
21:52 |
sc250024 |
No problem |
21:53 |
irctc454 |
All right. Have a good day! Thanks again! See ya! |
