09:44 pbandark Hi.. if I am using "disk.status" function and setting event to be triggered if disk utilization is above 90%, then do i need to periodically run state file from master? or if i executed it once, then disk uitlization will be auto monitored by minion and it will trigger event if disk uitlization goes above 90% ?

10:09 whytewolf it will just report failure to the state run

10:52 viccuad Hi folks. Is there a way to get unicode chars to work when replacing a file? I tried file.replace and cmd.run, but both fail. Thanks in advance
10:54 whytewolf unicode in salt is kind of meh right now. the next release [when salt should hopfully support python3 fully] should be better at dealing with unicode.
10:55 whytewolf and on that note i am going to bed

18:36 ProT-0-TypE it doesn't have everything I need
18:36 ProT-0-TypE like creating a simple snapshot
18:38 XenophonF ttps://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.boto_ec2.html#salt.states.boto_ec2.snapshot_created
18:38 XenophonF ?
18:39 ProT-0-TypE mmm not sure if this is exactly what I need
18:39 ProT-0-TypE how can I use that to create a snapshot of a specific volume?
18:40 ProT-0-TypE that one needs an ami_name and instance_name, that shouldn't be really required for a simple volume snapshot
18:41 XenophonF looks like it isn't supported

19:14 whytewolf ProT-0-TypE: I believe that is a cloud action, if so you could use module.run to run a cloud.action https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.cloud.html#salt.modules.cloud.action
19:16 whytewolf don't quote me on that though.

23:02 MTecknology If I run 11.3.2016 across my environment and want to test a feature I'm writing against develop, what are the chances I can install the develop version without compatibility problems?
23:03 hemebond Low :-)
23:06 MTecknology Is there any particular reason it'll break?
23:06 MTecknology that many changes between the two?
23:07 hemebond I would say so.
23:07 MTecknology So I get to deploy a bunch of VM's to test this feature out.
23:08 hemebond That's easy, no?
23:09 MTecknology Normally, I'd use this as an opportunity to get salt deploying VM's on my vm host but I've been letting too many projects distract me lately. It's getting a tab absurd.
23:10 MTecknology no... I may as well do it now.

23:13 MTecknology changed my mind again. Figuring out how I want to configure what gets deployed where and how networking will be configured is too much right now. manually deploying.. here we go!
23:16 fracklen joined #salt
23:17 hemebond Just use AWS :-)
23:17 hemebond Create instances. Test your stuff. Destroy all instances.
23:17 MTecknology aws is more expensive and tedius than doing it on my home cluster.
23:19 MTecknology I only have providers 'n such configured for digital ocean, though. When I start doing salt-cloud internally, I plan to introduce inventory management and create the concept of the inventory-defined network.
23:20 MTecknology Create a VM in the asset management system, and then the server exists. Doesn't matter if it's here, singapore, or new york...
23:22 MTecknology then if I wanted 20 VM's spun up, instead of logging into salt and running 20 salt-cloud commands, I run a local script that adds 20 VM's to inventory and I wait for the emails confirming their creation.
23:23 hemebond Isn't that kind of what a cloud map is?
23:23 MTecknology I haven't heard of cloud map until this second
23:23 hemebond Ah. You write what servers you want and the profile they'll use then tell salt-cloud to build them all.
23:23 MTecknology or destroy
23:24 hemebond That's right.
23:24 amcorreia joined #salt
23:24 MTecknology heh...
23:25 MTecknology now I feel like the integration will involve salt running a few API queries to generate the map file and some "static" pillar file from that stuff and I might be able to let salt-cloud do all the rest.
23:25 MTecknology man, that'd be a sexy saltconf talk to give!
23:31 MTecknology heheh... this is funny. If I want to dynamically create new servers based on resource utilization, I'd be creating a dedicated user for it to use in the inventory system that can create things in special groups only.
23:31 * MTecknology will eventually make it happen, and will then share it with the world. :)

23:53 MTecknology hemebond: The challenging bit will be that I have a lot of profile options at home. Deploying debian 8 or 9, which vlan, static or dhcp, get address if static (usually is), which storage option (fast, slow, or encrypted), some vlan's only allow dhcp for known hosts so the address reservation needs to be configured first, etc.
23:54 scoates joined #salt
23:59 MTecknology Is there a saltstack repo for the latest 'n greatest dev branch?
