08:00 navik When checking the dependencies versions on my master and my minion, there are two missing on my minions compared to the master: M2Crypto, and pycrypto
08:00 ravenx let me see if that happens to me, too

08:03 navik there are also other minions running without problems, but they were installed a while before

08:10 ravenx i think you should install pycrypto, as that looks to be needed to run,

08:10 ravenx as for m2crypt, probably optional

08:13 navik Sorry, got interrupted... salt-minion can start, salt-key on the master displays the minion, but test.ping does not work (no response or something)
08:13 navik And concerning pycrypto, the issue is that it is absent from the saltstack repo

13:37 navik Hello again everyone! So I tried to setup a minion on a centos 6.8 64-bit, and it worked without any issues. So, I'm almost done installing another centos (this time 32-bit), but a first assumption would be that the issue of the minion not responding is due to a difference of architecture between the master and the minion

13:43 oida_ joined #salt
13:44 candyman88 joined #salt
13:47 haam3r navik: an architecture difference between master and minion should in no way interfere with comms between the two
13:48 haam3r navik: have you checked the logs on the minion? They usually pretty clearly spell out if and why the minion cannot connect to the master
13:51 navik The minion on the 32bit connected and was accepted, but the test.ping ended with no response from the minion
13:53 XenophonF navik: check the contents of /var/log/salt/minion on your 32-bit CentOS 6.8 system
13:54 navik "[salt.utils.verify][WARNING ][3680] Insecure logging configuration detected! Sensitive data may be logged."
13:55 navik And here's the output when running salt-minion with debug https://pastebin.com/5jCchV5H
13:56 XenophonF that's not really an error, right?
13:56 XenophonF I'm looking at the paste next.
13:57 XenophonF well it connected to the master OK
13:58 XenophonF btw you want to obfuscate things like the AES key on line 30
13:58 XenophonF anything in /var/log/salt/master on your master?
13:58 XenophonF same versions of salt on both sides?
13:59 navik Yep the versions are the same
13:59 XenophonF so on test-minion2 you can run `salt-call test.ping` and it works, right?
14:00 XenophonF on the master what happens if you run `salt --log-level=debug -t 300 test-minion2 test.ping`?
14:02 navik no the test.ping works for the 64bit, for the 32, it ends after a while with no response from the minion
14:02 XenophonF are you sure the salt-minion service is running on the 32-bit system?
14:03 toastedpenguin joined #salt
14:04 Sketch yeah, make sure it didn't die
14:04 Sketch you might also try restarting it
14:04 Sketch i have occasionally seen minions be running, but fail to respond, and a restart of the salt-minion service fixes it.
14:04 Sketch usually right after an install/upgrade/first connection, or something along those lines
14:05 navik "ps aux | grep salt"gives 2 salt minions processes, the first one being the paste and the second the one I just launched
14:05 Sketch you shouldn't have 2 separate minions running at the same time...
14:06 toastedpenguin joined #salt
14:08 greyeax joined #salt
14:09 navik Yep, my mistake. But so, running salt-minion starts it, then the key is accepted correctly by the master, but the process goes in background
14:10 XenophonF sounds like you started the service by hand instead of using the service manager
14:10 cgiroua joined #salt
14:11 mpanetta joined #salt
14:11 navik I do start it by hand
14:12 XenophonF :-/
14:12 XenophonF the good news is that when you break it, you get to keep both pieces
14:12 navik But it works correctly on the 64 bit
14:12 navik What do you mean ?
14:13 meca Hi, I'm having issues with an elasticsearch returner. The json is not accepted by es because of a `field name` that `cannot contain '.'`. Is there anyway to escape it?
14:14 XenophonF To paraphrase Captain Kirk, you've got to learn WHY things work on a server.
14:14 XenophonF unless you're debugging a service process, start things the normal way

16:20 nicksloan so, I have a salt master on an EC2 instance that will be terminated, so I'm trying to replace it. I made an AMI of the old master, and created a new instance from it. Then I changed the IP of the dns record that is in the minion config files for all of my minions. Finally, I stopped salt-master on the old master. The minions are not connecting though.
16:20 nicksloan this is on the current version across the board.
