00:49 wwalker in our environment, jinja_trim_blocks is set in the master config.  But that breaks salt-formulas/users-formula.  Is there a way to turn off jinja_trim_blocks (and jinja_lstrip_blocks) in a per state way?

02:15 hemebond Not that I know of.
02:16 hemebond jinja_trim_blocks seems like a bad setting to use.
02:17 whytewolf wwalker: https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/35398 and the answer is no.

02:20 whytewolf would be easier just to actually do the whitespace control yourself then use it
02:21 hemebond Yeah. I use {%- by default now.
02:21 hemebond Most of the time whitespace doesn't matter.

07:25 whytewolf humm, apperently someone was using a proof of concept formula i had written like 3 years ago. and they didn't fork it.
07:25 whytewolf i deleted it. last week and purge it from my backups
07:27 whytewolf lesson of the day. if it is important to you. fork it
07:27 Inveracity ouch
07:29 Inveracity isn't it all cached on the minions that had the state applied?
07:31 whytewolf it is, however that cache can be refreshed after say a master refreshes is't getfs cache and bombs out to nothing. crashing the git backend
07:31 Inveracity sucks to be that guy I guess :(
07:33 whytewolf it does. and I feel sorry for him. but honestly I'm not going to lose sleep over what is his mistake to begin with.
07:33 Inveracity definitely not

14:40 taylorbyte just wondering when extending sls data would be used. would it be used mainly to extend saltstack-formulas?
14:44 viq Or your own states, one example I've seen is eg you have a generic apache state, but then you add stuff to it when using it to set apache up for your webapp

18:10 hoonetorg is there already a release date for salt 2016.11.5, it fixes an important augeas bug.
18:11 mem32 I'm running django.collectstatic from an SLS using module.run but it always runs as root -- How can I specify a user when running this command so that the files get copied with the right owner?
18:16 dustlet joined #salt
18:16 edrocks joined #salt
18:16 dustlet what does the [] mean when salt uses that in examples like httpd:   service.running: [] ?
18:16 mem32 if this isn't possible... can I recurse the directory tree and change user and group owner?
18:24 whytewolf hoonetorg: a release date is almost never given. only thing we have is that it is tagging soon. normally when they say that it is about 2 to 3 weeks later.
18:25 mem32 nm I changed ownership recursively after the command runs :)
18:25 icebal joined #salt
18:25 hoonetorg whytewolf: thx
18:27 whytewolf dustlet: basicly it is saying there are no more items to this state. you normally can leave it off. but you can't have two states in a row that leave it off. so it is recommended to always use it.
18:28 whytewolf it does. if he is in the channel and he was acctually using it there is a chance he can get it. by pulling for the headless repo that the master uses. https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/troubleshooting/yaml_idiosyncrasies.html#yaml-does-not-like-double-short-decs
18:28 whytewolf grrr

18:29 whytewolf ignore the line about pulling from headless git that was something else
18:31 dustlet that is a useful feature whytewolf
18:32 dustlet would it be accurate to assume that having a good foundation in python yaml and jinja will make it easier to master salt? is it useful to go and specifically study these programming languages?
18:32 DEger joined #salt
18:33 DEger joined #salt
18:35 whytewolf it will give you a good working foundation.
18:37 whytewolf helps avoid some pitfalls like a dict under a list item needed 2 more spaces then normal

19:00 Drunken_Panda is there any easy way to ask a top file not to apply to a certain minion? ( use case we have a SUMA server in prod so it carrys the prod prefix which our default states are globbed on we want to have another salt master for multiple masters however we dont want any server applying states to the SUMA server)
19:01 impi joined #salt
19:02 Drunken_Panda I supose I could write jinja if hostname = SUMA dont apply this but would rather not

21:33 lorengordon (or submit a backport yourself)

21:59 Mogget_ I have a config file which is managed in a function, this config file is changed (remove comments in front of settings concerning ssl) if certificates are installed on the machine.
22:00 Mogget_ This makes the file.managed function always run when state.apply. Is it possible to create a function which does not copy a file if the file match exactly except if those ssl settings are changed and a file exist?
