02:06 Slimmons test
02:06 Slimmons oh yeah, I think I'm in
02:13 Slimmons Can anyone with an amount of experience with salt-api run commands take a look at my json and give me a hint at what's wrong?  https://gist.github.com/Slimmons/1672feeb0c10fb41d11f60a2653724bd
02:13 Slimmons it's the file named myCURLcommand
02:21 whytewolf have you tried 'arg': ['createFile']
02:22 whytewolf and are you getting any kind of error?
02:23 jeffspeff joined #salt
02:23 Slimmons sorry, meant to post the error, it's an invalid json document
02:23 Slimmons 400 bad request
02:24 evle joined #salt
02:24 whytewolf does the state createFile.sls or createFile/init.sls exist and does it work from the command line?
02:25 Slimmons yes, it works from the command line
02:25 Slimmons this is my first time playing around with json (I'm not really a web person), so I imagine it's something related to that.
02:25 whytewolf json isn't only for web.
02:26 whytewolf salt internalls all use json
02:26 whytewolf https://jsonlint.com/
02:26 whytewolf but your json is valid
02:26 Slimmons well, I guess that narrows out my faulty json
02:27 Slimmons the file in that gist "workingCurl" is an example of what does work, with just the test.ping.
02:28 whytewolf right, which doesn't have arguments with it. which is where i think you are running into problems
02:28 renoirb_ joined #salt
02:28 whytewolf btw. not sure why you posted your top file. you are calling the sls directly so the top file isn't called at all
02:29 Slimmons i originally used that same gist for some troubleshooting a while back
02:29 whytewolf ahh
02:29 Slimmons when I was having all sorts of problems
02:29 Slimmons I haven't had an easy time of learning salt
02:29 Slimmons lol
02:29 Slimmons I did come into salt with no background experience in technology though
02:29 Slimmons turns out, my degree in music didn't really prepare me for the tech world
02:29 Slimmons who would have thought
02:30 whytewolf just humm a happy tune while your soal is slowly devoured by the dark lords
02:30 Slimmons it's like you've been watching me the past several months
02:30 Slimmons which you kind of have, since I spent a decent amount of that here, asking for help :)
02:31 whytewolf I have been in the it many years. at this point i sometimes feel like one of the dark lords.
02:32 whytewolf anyway try with "arg": ["createFile"], in place of your kwarg set
02:32 Slimmons I did, same error
02:32 whytewolf see if that at least gets a better reaction
02:32 whytewolf oh, humm.
02:32 Slimmons 400 bad request
02:32 Slimmons invalid json document
02:32 Slimmons so
02:32 Slimmons probably unrelated error
02:32 Slimmons but I tried watching salt-api while that was happening
02:32 Slimmons but
02:32 Slimmons when i use salt-api command, i get no output
02:33 Slimmons ...i don't have debug set on this computer though...lemme try that
02:33 whytewolf you should get something in the salt-master
02:33 whytewolf but yeah, debug all the things
02:33 Slimmons the salt-master just returns the same error
02:33 Slimmons just a bad json file
02:33 KevinAn2757 joined #salt
02:35 Slimmons yep, salt-api with debug on just returns POST /run HTTP/1.1" 400
02:35 Slimmons so, the same return as in the salt-master debug
02:36 whytewolf okay, long shot. try removing the arg bit and just having "mods": "createFile",
02:37 Slimmons same error.  It's almost as if I'm not even close
02:37 Slimmons Yeah, if I run the same thing, but mispell something terribly, like turn fun to fu, it gives the same output.
02:38 Slimmons I'm going to just go ahead and reboot everything.  Which I imagine will fix all of my problems
02:38 whytewolf so, how about state.sls without arguments [should throw a different error]
02:40 whytewolf rebooting is an absolute last resort. you should restart processes before rebooting.
02:42 whytewolf ... have you tried "eauth": "auto" like you have the one that works
02:42 KevinAn2757 joined #salt
02:44 Slimmons aha, got a different output
02:44 Slimmons Passed invalid arguments to state.sls, when I ran it with just "mods": "createFile"
02:44 whytewolf ok, that is progress
02:45 whytewolf try either the kwarg or arg
02:47 Slimmons <3
02:47 Slimmons kwarg worked
02:47 Slimmons I now have things that are working
02:47 Slimmons at least 1 thing is working at least
02:47 Slimmons take that life
02:47 whytewolf yay
02:47 Slimmons thanks wolf
02:47 whytewolf np
02:48 Slimmons also, shout out to Seth House who has had me emailing him for 3 days.
02:48 Slimmons and he hasn't blocked me
02:48 whytewolf lol
02:49 whytewolf were you the one that emailed the list a couple of days ago about not being able to talk in IRC?
02:50 Slimmons yep
02:50 Slimmons it was driving me crazy
02:50 whytewolf okay
02:51 Slimmons seth told me I had to auth to nickserv first
02:51 Slimmons which...i didn't know was a thing
02:51 Slimmons They should probably have a note about that at the top of the page
02:51 Slimmons as of now any noob who googles how to get help with saltstack is going to find this irc, and not be able to post to it lol
02:52 Slimmons it's like....help is just within reach, behind a thin glass wall.....that's unbreakable
02:52 Slimmons and no one can hear you scream
02:52 Slimmons and there's also the mailing list
02:52 whytewolf iggy: isn't saltstackbot doing it's job? thought it was supposed to tell people when they wern't registered with nickserv
02:52 Slimmons I can verify that it definitely didn't tell me lol
02:52 Slimmons I thought you guys had just gotten tired of my questions
02:53 Slimmons "but....what is computer?"
02:53 whytewolf lol, no. a bunch of flooders kept coming in and nick flooding. really annoying for those of us that have somekind of automated script that pings us when out nick is said
02:53 Slimmons I haven't really used salt since saltconf 2016.  Now I'm just getting back into it.  That wasn't expected, but it happened
02:54 Slimmons that sucks
02:54 Slimmons I'll never understand the joy of spam bots
02:54 whytewolf spam bots at least have a purpase. make money. these were just flooders.
02:55 Slimmons those damn ansible people
02:55 Slimmons lol
02:55 Slimmons the idea of that is hilarious to me
02:55 Slimmons I'm sure that's not what it was
02:55 Slimmons but I hope it was
02:55 Slimmons #nerdwars
02:55 whytewolf lol. lots of more important wars have been fought then anisable vs salt vs puppet vs chef.
02:55 Slimmons I was at a python convention, where a guy gave a talk about saltstack, and an ansible zealot would NOT stop standing up and saying things like "ansible does that, but faster"
02:56 whytewolf such as the emacs vi wars and the distro wars
02:56 Slimmons lol, i thought the emacs side had died away
02:56 Slimmons I guess I must hunt them down
02:56 whytewolf hehe i know several emacs users.
02:57 Slimmons Yeah, I work in a place with lots of tech companies, and I went into a lab where everyone was an emacs user.  It was kind of weird.  I think vim is way more common where I'm at (Huntsville AL)
02:57 Slimmons it was weird to be outnumbered, as a vim guy
02:57 Slimmons also, I was wearing a shirt that says
02:57 Slimmons ":w saves"
02:58 Slimmons #rekt
02:58 Slimmons it's a parody of the jesus saves shirt....and it made me happy, so I bought it
02:59 Slimmons at any rate, thanks again for the help.  I'm going to go try and run into another problem.  See you again soon :)

09:21 nku what exactly does saltutil.sync_grains sync? the python modules with the grains themselves? and where to? i don't see anything synced..
09:22 nku "Custom grains modules should be placed in a subdirectory named _grains located under the file_roots specified by the master config file." is also ambiguous, there are many directories under that setting, i assume any one is valid?
09:28 babilen nku: Salt looks at salt://_grains/ so it doesn't matter where it comes from (file_roots, GitFS, ...)
09:29 arount babilen, rgrundstrom  it's useless, but I want to say this is great to heard that, I think at this point salt should start to really focus on its code - a lot of files are just not production grade

10:14 colegatron there is anyway to syntax-check a pillar file without having to run a state that uses it?

11:12 felskrone anyone have an idea how to find out which minions might not be checking into the master regularly? manage.up is not the way to go in mutlimaster-failover mode. i need something that works "offline", like checking the cache or keystore
11:16 ProT-0-TypE joined #salt
11:28 PerilousApricot joined #salt
11:31 dstensnes felskrone: i suppose you could make a reactor that listens for minion connection events
11:33 dstensnes felskrone: listen for something like "salt/minion/*/start"
11:34 dstensnes and log a timestamp and minion id somewhere, so you can check last connection time
11:34 dstensnes would that work?
11:36 babilen presence event changes logged elsewhere
11:36 dstensnes ?
11:37 babilen https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/event/master_events.html#presence-events
11:37 felskrone joined #salt
11:37 dstensnes ah, yes
11:37 dstensnes totally forgot about that
11:37 dstensnes better idea
11:38 felskrone dstensnes: yes, that would work for minions starting up, not for minions running oom though
11:38 dstensnes felskrone: listen for salt/presence/present events with a reactor, and log id and timestamp somewhere
11:38 dstensnes would that work?
11:38 felskrone babilen: the presence_events have the same problem, i tried both approaches
11:38 babilen Which problem is that?
11:39 felskrone if a minions goes oom the connections is still there, but the minion does not sync modules regularly anymore (which is should because of a scheduled job, every 2h)
11:40 babilen And it is not being reported as absent ?
11:40 felskrone nope, the connection is still intact
11:40 babilen Would running a test.ping change that ?
11:40 dstensnes that's weird...
11:40 felskrone you can check in netstat, i guess is the same thing is true for ping, which usually works fine even for oom machines
11:41 felskrone the regular ping, not the test.ping i mean
11:41 babilen I was specifically referring to test.ping and manage.up
11:41 felskrone manage.up is not designed to work in multimaster-pki with failover
11:41 babilen Just to get salt to "poke" the minion ... "are you there still?"
11:42 felskrone or even a (nfs-)shared keystore
11:42 babilen My idea was rather to get salt to "update" its connection status
11:42 babilen So .. test.ping works?
11:42 absolutejam test
11:43 absolutejam oops
11:43 absolutejam howdy
11:43 babilen o/
11:43 dstensnes he
11:43 dstensnes llo
11:43 dstensnes heh
11:47 felskrone babilen: on a broken/oom minion test.ping usually does not work no. i also want to know about the minions which are not logging in to a master at all, for example if the minion is not running due to space shortage, broken package install, etc. the presence-events do not help with that scenario either
11:48 babilen Sure, I guess dstensnes' and my basic idea was "Log minion start/presence events in an external data source and compare that to your known 'wanted' status"
11:48 babilen Furthermore my hope was that you could trigger a "presence down" event with test.ping
11:48 felskrone yeah, i was just hoping there could be an easier way, but i guess there isnt
11:49 babilen There might be
11:49 felskrone i guess ill have to look at master-returners and redis or something like that
11:50 dstensnes felskrone: i still believe logging to an external data source at the master is a better way to go
11:50 dstensnes that will actually tell you if the minion is totally missing in action as well
11:51 felskrone dstensnes: thats what master-returns are for :-)
11:51 dstensnes ah, yes
11:51 dstensnes i was just about to suggest something like that
11:51 felskrone i will, thx to both of you :-)

19:37 saltyguy Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with Salt not being able to manage some of my Jinja template files
19:37 saltyguy I'm getting this error: "Unable to manage file: Jinja variable 'list object' has no attribute 'global'"
19:37 saltyguy the variable looks like this: {% set global = haproxy['global'] %}
19:37 saltyguy Any suggestions / hints on how to fix this?

19:47 saltyguy Sorry, I am half guessing here, but this is where it looks to me like it is being used
19:47 saltyguy global     log     127.0.0.1   local0 {%- for option_name, option_value in global.iteritems() %}     {{ option_name }}   {{ option_value }} {%- endfor %}
19:48 saltyguy global.iteritems()
19:48 absolutejam can you use hastebin or gist or something please?
19:49 absolutejam Hard to see in IRC and it clutters the buffer
19:49 saltyguy Oh, yep

20:33 saltyguy @absolutejam thanks for the hint
20:37 lordcirth_work saltyguy, if you want pillar data you need to get salt.pillar.get('haproxy:global'), not just haproxy['global']

23:25 benjiale Heya, I'm running into some issues doing a masterless minion on a windows host. All of the files I've referenced at salt:// are not found. I've set the file_client to local, and the default roots is configured as C:\salt\srv\salt - when I call a local high state, the top file is found, but the file contained in the same directory is not found. Does anyone have some suggestions on how I might troubleshoot this?
