00:47 tellendil Hi, I've just updated to salt 2017.07 and had to update my docker containers to the new api. However I get keeping changes once I run the state again...  I get https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/hWApXik8rRdqBmS36d8DMA as an output. Does anyone knows what's going wrong ?

13:56 KingOfFools Looks like salt doesnt support subdirectories in _modules  directory. Are there any solutions to how I can group modules for different purposes?
13:57 whytewolf KingOfFools: there is an example. in boto_
13:58 KingOfFools whytewolf: i'm sorry, but what is boto_?
13:58 whytewolf the boto_* modules
13:59 whytewolf moto_asg boto_cfn boto_ec2 boto_route53 ect
13:59 KingOfFools whytewolf: ah, i understand. You suggest to use super long names for modules. :D
14:00 whytewolf well, since you can't create subdirectories.
14:00 KingOfFools whytewolf: yea, think I'll do that for now
14:00 KingOfFools whytewolf: thanks
14:00 whytewolf or file a bug report that the sync modules should sync __init__.py also
14:02 KingOfFools whytewolf: mmm. can you explain?
14:03 whytewolf the reason subdirectories don't work is the python can't find the modules they get synced or at least the used to.
14:03 whytewolf but the just won't run
14:06 KingOfFools whytewolf: so you saying that I should create init files for write a bug report? i dont understand
14:06 KingOfFools s/for/or
14:06 KingOfFools https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/37273 this issue says its not possible
14:07 zerocoolback joined #salt
14:07 whytewolf well no it says it is working as designed. it is possable but would rather not deal with the complications it brings.
14:08 whytewolf if you look at inspectlib it is a built in module that does exactly what you are requesting. be in a subdirectory
14:09 whytewolf anyway, just go with the long name. it is easier

14:33 whytewolf but yes. you can call your custom modules in jinja
14:34 KingOfFools well, it says [ERROR   ] Rendering exception occurred: Jinja variable 'salt.utils.templates.AliasedLoader object' has no attribute 'custom_module'
14:34 whytewolf does your module work from the cli?
14:35 KingOfFools yes
14:36 whytewolf are you calling module.function or just doing module?
14:39 psychi[m] joined #salt
14:41 whytewolf ?
14:43 KingOfFools whytewolf: im calling function
14:43 whytewolf just function?
14:43 KingOfFools no, as you said module.function
14:43 iggy_ did you sync_all first?
14:44 KingOfFools i did saltutil.sync_modules
14:44 whytewolf ... are you calling your module from pillar?
14:44 sh123124213 joined #salt
14:44 iggy that should do it
14:45 KingOfFools i think problem is that i run state file with salt-run state.orch
14:45 whytewolf ...
14:45 KingOfFools :D
14:45 iggy salt-run runs on the master
14:46 iggy so same issue as pillar... it's got to return the same data on the master as minion
14:46 KingOfFools so this module wont be available there right?
14:46 dunz0r I have a state where I only want to do something if a grain isn't set, any ideas how to do that?
14:47 dunz0r I've got jinja that does {% if not salt['grains.get']('mygrain') %} right now, but it fails, since mygrain isn't set/existing
14:47 iggy or just use a state on the minion and call that from within the orch file
14:48 iggy dunz0r: that should work since grains.get will return None if the grain isn't set
14:48 dunz0r iggy: It doesn't though, it complains that "Grain mygrain does not exist" :/
14:49 dunz0r Although... I AM trying to append to that unset grain... do I need to create it first or something?
14:50 iggy are you sure that if grains.get is what's failing and not something else?
14:50 dunz0r iggy: Ah, it's grains.append... can't see the forest because of the trees etc :)
14:51 KingOfFools iggy: maybe you can suggest something else. What I'm trying to do is to pass data that i grab from mysql database to a state function. I tried that with pillar, but since there's a lot of data all my other orch functions running very long, because of refreshing all that data from mysql everytime.
14:51 dunz0r Hmm... it SHOULD be grains.append though... how strange
14:52 KingOfFools iggy: so i was thinking of using custom modules
14:53 whytewolf KingOfFools: that sounds like you are trying to reinvent sdb
14:54 iggy KingOfFools: put the data in a grain or sdb?

14:58 KingOfFools before use
14:59 iggy custom grain module then?
15:00 KingOfFools iggy: should i use grain if i run that states on master?
15:00 whytewolf do you have a minion on the master?
15:00 KingOfFools yes i do
15:02 KingOfFools where i can read about that custom grain module thing?
15:03 whytewolf https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/grains/#writing-grains
15:04 KingOfFools but when I will fetch data from that grain will it refresh just that grain or all others too?
15:04 iggy the grain is probably the easiest way to get that data from the minion to the master
15:05 iggy grains can be cached (which it sounds like you want to do since it's expensive to do this data fetching/processing)
15:06 KingOfFools iggy: well no, i dont want them to be cached
15:08 KingOfFools iggy: i update server configs from that data every 15 minutes. So it needs to be fresh
15:08 whytewolf updating configs every 15 min. that sounds insane.
15:09 KingOfFools not if you are working at web hosting
15:09 KingOfFools and its pretty slow actually, 15 minutes
15:10 whytewolf I've worked web hosting. we didn't change config files that often we made them dynamic so that we didn't have to
15:11 KingOfFools well, thats what i have now
15:12 heaje joined #salt
15:14 KingOfFools so, how can i run module on minion and assign output to jinja variable?
15:14 iggy yeah, event driven seems like the way to go here (and is actually salt's specialty)
15:14 iggy you can't do that in an orchestrate job
15:14 iggy full stop
15:16 KingOfFools iggy: and if ill run that on minion?
15:16 iggy it should work fine
15:17 KingOfFools iggy: yea, but can you give a syntax hint, how to do t hat

17:09 wendall911 joined #salt
17:09 astronouth7303 Try `+` instead of `~`
17:10 astronouth7303 (Why `~`? Does that do anything?)
17:11 jmedinar is doing the concatenation ... and that actually works fine is the condition the one that doesnt
17:12 jmedinar is basically creating a file as follows ... minionid.disk_warning.flag
17:12 astronouth7303 oh, so it is...
17:13 astronouth7303 (The ways jinja is not python continue to surprise and baffle me)
17:14 astronouth7303 well, if it exists and isn't a directory, `file.directory_exists` will be false
17:15 jmedinar is there any other verification for file? I just can't find documentation for this
17:16 astronouth7303 it's an execution module, specifically https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.file.html
17:17 astronouth7303 there's alright-to-decent references for almost all of salt's modules
17:17 whytewolf ~ in jinja is not just concat. it concerts everything being concated into a string first.
17:19 jmedinar understood got it working now
17:20 jmedinar it was file.exists
17:20 doubletwist I'm debating between using ssh_auth to manage users authorised keys vs pushing a file. :(
17:20 jmedinar thanks!
17:22 astronouth7303 doubletwist: my preference is to use the managed version until it proves non-functional/too quirky/not right for my needs and then use managed files
17:22 astronouth7303 (I've found that the network module on debian is.... quirky)
17:22 _KaszpiR_ joined #salt
17:26 jmedinar Is there a way to capture my reactor file name into a variable inside of the same reactor?
17:26 lordcirth_work doubletwist, ssh_auth works pretty well, the only thing is the weirdness of having to specify the key type and not have it in the string
17:27 doubletwist lordcirth_work:  what if there are multiple keys of different types?
17:27 lordcirth_work doubletwist, then you need fancy logic or separate pillar lists.  I just said, "k we're using ed25519 then"
17:27 lordcirth_work Otherwise you can pretty simply generate the file with a for loop template
17:28 doubletwist https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.ssh_auth.html  looking at the example at the beginning [sshkeys: showing multiple entries under - names:] suggests you can include it in the entry?
17:28 astronouth7303 oh, that has some weirdnesses
17:28 sarcasticadmin joined #salt
17:29 astronouth7303 excuse me, ssh_known_hosts with multiple keys per host has some weirdnesses
17:36 lordcirth_work I ended up generating known_hosts with a file template
17:36 lordcirth_work Pulled the pubkeys from all minions via Mine and push them back to all
17:37 doubletwist hrm ssh_auth doesn't seem to have the ability to enforce *only* the auth keys configured? ie. remove any additional that aren't configured via salt?
17:37 nixjdm joined #salt
17:39 rmelero joined #salt
17:40 lordcirth_work doubletwist, Nope.  Not uncommon for Salt.
17:41 lordcirth_work doubletwist, what I have done when bringing in existing servers is once I have all needed keys in salt, just salt '*' cmd.run  and rm the keys
17:41 lordcirth_work then immediately apply
17:41 astronouth7303 it varies. But I think ssh_auth doesn't have it because it's designed to be used multiple times in your states
17:42 lordcirth_work yeah, if you are using the same state multiple times, "kill all but me" doesn't make sense
17:43 whytewolf well, they could use the file.* module as an example with clean. add all these states outcomes together using requires. if any of them have clean then if there is something that doens't mater it won't exist
17:43 whytewolf although in a single file that can be a pain
17:45 whytewolf at that poit would be easier just to use file.accumulated with file.managed
17:47 svij3 joined #salt
17:48 doubletwist right
17:48 doubletwist Probably not a big deal I guess. I'm only going to manage it for root user [and maybe not that any more once salt is fully functional] and 2-3 local user accounts [for unix admins]
17:49 astronouth7303 it's probably something you want to audit for security reasons, though
17:49 doubletwist perhaps - in which case I'd be better of just pushing an authoritative file for it it sounds like.
17:51 astronouth7303 probably. I'm managing a `known_hosts` with file.managed and inline contents

18:11 dev_tea I can't speak to all distros offhand, but for rhel at least saltstack provides a major version pinned repo. That or pinning in your package manager might be something you'd be interested in to prevent your minions from updating and breaking your setup

18:36 redonkuless I've updated salt to 2017.7.0 (Nitrogen) doing so, i broke Hubblestack, I'm receiving ValueError: too many values to unpack, I have updated hubblestack to the latest version but I'm still having issues is anyone familure with this issue and how I might resolve it?
18:39 astronouth7303 redonkuless: 2017.7 minion with 2016.11 master?
18:39 sgo_ joined #salt
18:39 redonkuless no both are 2017.7.0
18:41 redonkuless i just ran salt '*" test.version and both minions I have responded 2017.7.0, doing a salt --version shows the same for the mmaster

18:45 whytewolf that looks like the hubble custom module has an issue.
18:45 whytewolf might need to report that to them
18:45 whytewolf but first. you said you updated did you resync modules after that?
18:52 nixjdm joined #salt
18:59 astronouth7303 what's the option to configure which module to use to provide a virtual?
19:00 whytewolf you mean providers?

19:06 lordcirth_work redonkuless, yeah, I couldn't get hubble to work in 2017.7 either, though I didn't have it before
19:07 astronouth7303 yeah, i'm looking at reimplementing/fixing several bits of the zabbix modules, and i want to make sure my zabbix execution module overrides the bundled one
19:07 whytewolf astronouth7303: if the virtual name is zabbix custom modules always override built in ones
19:07 astronouth7303 ok

19:19 themikenicholson My minions have all auto-upgraded to the 2017.7 release but it is causing some problems - is there an easy way to get them to downgrade (i.e. through Salt)?
19:20 astronouth7303 themikenicholson: depends on how you installed the minion and what distro. The usual advice is to use your package manager
19:21 themikenicholson we install via salt-bootstrap in ubuntu so it uses the official salt repo pointing to 'latest'
19:23 themikenicholson but if I pushed a new state that ensured that they had the 2016 saltstack repo in /etc/apt/sources.d and then a command to downgrade salt-minion and salt-common I'm guessing salt-minion wouldn't like that?
19:24 whytewolf the hard part is restarting salt. but salt doesn't care about if you down grade
19:24 whytewolf also you should change the saltboot-strap to not install latest.
19:25 SalanderLives joined #salt
19:25 themikenicholson whytewolf: yeah lesson learned there
19:26 themikenicholson Is there a known way to restart salt-minion or do we just have to manually restart it?
19:26 astronouth7303 (see also: Why doesn't salt-cloud+salt-bootstrap cooperate to not install versions incompatible with the master?)
19:26 usernkey joined #salt
19:26 astronouth7303 themikenicholson: your init system
19:27 whytewolf astronouth7303: because bootstrap is a seperate peice of software. that doesn't know what version your master is at
19:27 whytewolf themikenicholson: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/faq.html#restart-using-states
19:28 astronouth7303 no, but cloud does and could communicate that to bootstrap (or just generate args for bootstrap)
19:28 themikenicholson Gotcha, that is exactly what I was looking for
19:28 whytewolf cloud doesn't either. you don't have to install salt on the salt master. it can be installed on a seperate system
19:28 whytewolf salt-cloud*
19:28 astronouth7303 it knows how to do key registration with the master
19:29 astronouth7303 (at least, when run from the same system as the master)
19:29 astronouth7303 it knows its own version

20:58 redonkuless whytewolf: yeah, ive resynced all the modules and updated hubblestack as well, and did a hubble sync had the same issue thats why I came here, wasnt sure if something changed with python supported libraries, i was reading about python 3 support that could break some stuff, wasnt sure if that was the problem im running into, even though im using python 2.7
21:01 whytewolf redonkuless: it is possable. unforchantly you might need to submit a ticket with the hubblestack github.

21:26 noraatepernos I’d like to be able to have it survive restart.
21:28 whytewolf depends. if i have a split of machines that will not be on a cloud hosted system i would defintly go salt. for the cloud based one i might weigh the options before decided on salt
21:30 whytewolf coarse. if i had a cloud machine i just might setup the /etc/security/limits.conf and /etc/pam.d/common-session files in the image and not bother with either
