02:14 scooterx3 Hey all, I'm learning salt currently and am mainly interested right now in getting salt-cloud to provision VMs for me using libvirt on the same machine that is set up as salt master. I've got so far as setting up my provider and profile, but when I try to run the `salt-cloud -p` command with debug, I notice that it sits and waits for the guest IP (I presume to log in and bootstrap) but it never actually comes through. it then just gives up
02:14 scooterx3 and destroys the would-be new VM. Wondering if anyone here with experience in provisioning KVM machines using libvirt could perhaps point out whatever (hopefully) simple thing it is that I'm missing.
02:15 scooterx3 https://pastebin.com/j7XCD2PY << provider and profile, if helpful

03:09 vexati0n I've been using salt-cloud for about a year now, and all I have learned is that AWS works, Azure works after you troubleshoot the crap out of it and compile a bunch of stuff yourself, and everything else is sketchy at best.

03:11 vexati0n I haven't used libvirt, but in general Salt-Cloud will just crap out if the system doesn't provision a public IP automatically. I was trying to set up qemu profiles with a proxmox server, but I have proxmox 5 and apparently something broke since v4 that breaks salt-cloud.
03:17 scooterx3 Hm, ok. I'd been trying to get libvirt to just use its ip-learning system working, but it kept failing. The other option I have currently is (maybe) the qemu-agent one. Researching that now. But dang, it's sad to hear that it's such a pain to provision with salt-cloud
03:20 bildz im wondering how well it would work in google cloud and am willing to work through / document the progress

08:38 mikecmpbll joined #salt
08:39 Neighbour remyd1: what happens when you force-update the pillar with `salt-call saltutil.refresh_pillar`? Does that change the behaviour of pillar.item/pillar.get?
08:39 rgrundstrom remyd1: pillar.get is used in states. If you want to list pillar items them pillar.items is the way to go.
08:40 rgrundstrom Neighbour: That did not work for me when i tried it a few weeks ago :)

15:05 simon_c hi all. I'm trying to write some custom grains. I can set a value based on salt.utils.network.interface, but not on salt.utils.network.default_route (get a AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'default_route' error) Anyone any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong ?
15:08 whytewolf well, for one. you didn't actually check the module to see if it had default_route [hint, it doesn't]
15:08 whytewolf https://github.com/saltstack/salt/blob/develop/salt/utils/network.py
15:09 lordcirth_work Did you want salt.modules.network.default_route, perhaps?

15:10 lordcirth_work simon_c, that'
15:10 lordcirth_work *'s calling salt.modules.network.default_route
15:10 lordcirth_work modules, not utils
15:10 whytewolf ^
15:11 simon_c oh. so it's just fluke that salt.utils.network.interface does have a an eqiovelent modules.network.interface ?
15:11 whytewolf luck really
15:12 whytewolf humm, not sure you can use modules in grains.
15:13 whytewolf if not, you could just add the code that it uses in your custom grain
15:14 whytewolf https://github.com/saltstack/salt/blob/develop/salt/modules/network.py#L1632-L1676
15:16 simon_c I'm very new to salt (& python). What's the best bit of docs to read to understand this difference between salt.modules and salt.utils ? I assumed (obviously wrongly) that if there's something I can access via "salt 'minion' foo.bar' that I could also access it in some way in a custom grain...
15:16 johnj_ joined #salt
15:17 sjorge joined #salt
15:19 whytewolf utils are code modules that run the backend of exacution modules [and state modules]. when you run acli command you are running a exacution module
15:20 whytewolf there are actually a lot of different kinds of modules in salt.
15:20 whytewolf grains are actually also a type of module
15:21 whytewolf currently there are not a lot of documentation on the utils modules.
15:23 simon_c whytewolf: as with so many things in salt. I feel understanding is close, but no quite there yet...
15:24 whytewolf utils are basicly the backbone shared code between the other different type of modules.
15:25 whytewolf to actually know what is in them you need to actaully read their code
15:25 whytewolf [since most of them are undocumented]
15:26 simon_c whytewolf: ahh. I was just about to ask why can't I find documentation about salt.utils.network, but I can for salt.modules.network ....
15:26 simon_c whytewolf: and being new to python, (and being a sysadmin, not a developer) make the code-reading non-trivial.. But, it's fun to learn.
15:26 simon_c eventually :)
15:27 whytewolf you'll get there. i started as a sysadmin. and i don't write a lot of code. but i have always been really good at reading it

17:51 NegiLXXXVIII of cause salt interprets this as a dict.
17:52 NegiLXXXVIII how can i escape this string so that salt won't provide it as a dict to the module?
17:54 ooboyle so the traceback doesn't happen because of the file path. There is some syntax within the file that breaks the refresh. Don't know what yet but it's related to an if statement i added yesterday
17:54 ooboyle traceback happens if the file is any path updated during refresh_db
17:58 ooboyle yep, that's it. It's the if wrapper I put on line 2 immediately under the package name that's on line 1. I was told yesterday this would work. Is there an example of this level of if statement that I can reference somewhere? I can't see to find one.

19:33 ooboyle can I target using multiple grains? e.g.: salt -G osrelease:2003Server cpuarch:x86?
19:33 ooboyle if so, what's the correct syntax.  can't seem to find any examples
19:33 mechleg vtolstov: they look like different communities?  i currently use the formulas from https://github.com/saltstack-formulas as the people involved look like the same people involved in official salt
19:34 mechleg ooboyle: you might want to check out compound targeting: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/targeting/
19:35 ooboyle will do. thanks for the pointer
19:35 vtolstov @mechleg: yes i see, but not understand main difference =) sometimes users can create more easy to use product then developers =)
19:38 mechleg sure, whatever your preference may be.  i also remember looking at their code and it usually had more things then i needed.  so check them both out and see which works best for you
19:38 mechleg ooboyle: something like:  salt -C 'G@osrelease:2003Server and cpuarch:x86'
19:40 mechleg oops, my syntax is bad.  salt -C 'G@osrelease:2003Server and G@cpuarch:x86'
19:41 mechleg where is my lunch...
19:41 mechleg so hungry cannot think
19:42 ooboyle cool thanks!
19:46 ooboyle indeed, works like a charm
19:54 mechleg vtolstov: if you are still looking for the difference between those formulas, it looks like https://github.com/salt-formulas/salt-formula-salt and the other formulas from that group are part of a larger project related to installing openstack components.  they have many more functions and options then the other formula.  there is a note about the difference on their docs page:  http://salt-formulas.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

20:11 NegiLXXXVIII hi. i need to provide a string to a module which looks like this: {314FAD12-F785-4471-BCE8-AB506642B9A1}. How can i tell salt not to cast this to a dict?
20:12 Neighbour NegiLXXXVIII: How about putting ''s around it?
20:12 NegiLXXXVIII does not work
20:13 Neighbour depends, are you providing the string from a CLI, or in an SLS file?
20:13 NegiLXXXVIII from a cli
20:13 Neighbour then you'll need to wrap it in extra quotes, like so: '"{bla}"'
20:14 Neighbour because the shell removes the first "layer" of quotes
20:14 NegiLXXXVIII ahh i see
20:15 NegiLXXXVIII thank you.
