15:52 bushelofsilicon Hey all, somehow I've lost the ability to do a highstate when invoking salt-master -l debug
15:53 bushelofsilicon I get the 'Salt request timed out. The master is not responding.' error
16:04 iggy stop the master, make sure all the processes are actually all gone, then start it up again
16:07 ouemt is there a good tutorial on how to manage users on multiple machines?
16:07 gawainlynch left #salt
16:12 bushelofsilicon iggy: hmm, there seems to be one process left but when I try to kill it it says the pid isn't found...
16:13 bushelofsilicon that's because the pid keeps changing

16:18 ouemt nkuttler: being really new to salt
16:18 pbandark hi.. i have setup salt-cloud for GCP. where salt-master is running in internal network. i am able to create instances using salt-cloud but, salt-minion package is not getting installed once the instance is up on GCP. is it because, GCP instance is not able to reach to salt-master(As its in internal environment) ?
16:20 wavded joined #salt
16:27 ouemt nkuttler: so some users need to be able to log in on some computers but not others, but we use NFS home drives, so I'd like all users to appear in the passwd file so that the /home ownership shows up correctly
16:28 nkuttler that's a tough one..
16:28 nkuttler ouemt: how would you control access without salt?
16:29 ouemt nkuttler: I've been manually editing the passwd and shadow files
16:29 ouemt so passwd is identical everywhere, but shadow has some passwords set to !! with /sbin/nologin for the shell
16:29 nkuttler ouemt: do you have a user.present state?
16:29 ouemt nkuttler: don't have anything set up
16:29 nkuttler oh
16:30 ouemt salt is installed and working (i.e. I can run remote commands) but I am not using it to manage any config yet
16:30 nkuttler ouemt: well, you can use user.present to set password/shell, and then set them depending on the host
16:30 nkuttler how you target the hosts.. is another matter
16:30 nkuttler how many users are we talking about?
16:31 Guest95 joined #salt
16:31 nkuttler will any of them require special configuration, like packages installed etc?
16:31 ouemt nkuttler: 44 total, probably 20 that need to login
16:31 ouemt nkuttler: no
16:32 nkuttler ouemt: one way would be to have the user config in pillars, and iterate over them in a state
16:33 ouemt nkuttler: is there a way to define users and then specify for each server which users should be on the "login" and "nologin" lists?
16:33 nkuttler there are many ways
16:33 thexder1 bildz: I was using a older version, but updated to 2017.7.1 and still got the same error.
16:34 nkuttler you could e.g. add the allowed hosts for each user to the pillar data
16:34 nkuttler you could allow users by minion grain
16:39 ouemt nkuttler: gotta run for a while, but you've given me things to google, thank you!
