00:15 JawnAuz Anyone know where I can find a guide/example on using the Salt engines for Logstash? Not having much luck so far, working logstash but nothing coming in from my Salt-Master...
00:16 JawnAuz The salt docs are pretty sparse in this case.

03:08 XenophonF The docs need some serious TLC.
03:09 XenophonF I've been hitting doc bug after doc bug in the boto_* states/modules.

15:07 afics Is there any case where pillar data being available via "salt '*' pillar.get" but not in a state sls via pillar.get is valid behaviour?
15:07 ivo_ joined #salt
15:07 Neighbour yes, if it concerns a nested pillar key
15:08 Neighbour in a sls, when you use `pillar.get`, you're using the get-function of jinja's "pillar" variable, which is a basic python dict
15:09 Neighbour salt's "pillar.get"-function (which you can use in jinja as salt['pillar.get'](key, default) can handle nested keys in a single string, each level separated by a colon (foo:bar:baz),
15:09 Neighbour while a normal dict.get cannot, it will look for the literal key including colons (and not find it)
15:13 afics Neighbour: aye, thanks. I assume if I want rendering to fail if a certain value is not present I should use salt['pillar']['foo:bar']?
15:21 afics hm, that doesn't work

15:37 XenophonF I recommend always using the accessor function
15:37 XenophonF so salt.pillar.get('...')
15:39 XenophonF that way you can get nested keys easily, and you're guaranteed a sane default
15:39 XenophonF whether keyerror or something of your choosing
15:41 afics won't get return none instead of KeyError if the key isn't found?
15:45 XenophonF you control the default value
15:53 afics Yrs, but I'd an extra if to check for None, if I want to fail if pillar doesn't have the value

18:36 tom[] how might a bridge (that was set up by installing the lcx package) interfere with the salt-minion authenticating itself to the master? with the bridge up, the master received nothing from this minon. when i stopped the bridge, the master received the key

18:52 tom[] from the minion's host i can ping salt. also from there, with the bridge down i can see 0mq traffic on ports 4505 and 4506. with the bridge up, i see no 0mq traffic on any interface
