00:10 mikea is there a clean way to configure dns on redhat 6 and 7 without having to define the network interface for each host (ala network.managed)?

08:55 absolutejam So yesterday I hit an issue that wherein I needed to run state a then state b as I needed to process the artefacts of state a In state b's jinja
08:56 absolutejam Anyone got any suggestions on getting around that?
08:56 absolutejam Orchestrate would have the same sailings right?
08:56 absolutejam Or would it not because it runs state a then state b?
08:57 absolutejam Include wouldn't work because it merges them

11:48 tom[] i can manage my app's custom daemons (which have systemd service units) with enable/disable/running/dead of salt.states.service. is there any similarly convenient state module to enable/disable the app's systemd timer units?

15:53 SEJeff The docs on pull requests aren't super helpful for workflow currently
15:53 SEJeff Is the best method to just fork a topic branch from develop and send a PR to make it into the next release?

15:57 XenophonF for bugfixes, branch from the oldest release branch that contains the bug
15:57 XenophonF for new features, branch from the develop branch

16:25 SEJeff I'll be doing a bit of both new features and bugfixes, but will probably just do them all on the develop branch
16:25 SEJeff I'd like to talk to some of the gents @ SUSE about it who I know wrote some of the k8s bits as well
16:26 SEJeff Some of the current functionality is just blatantly broken however

18:41 wedgie nomeed: sounds more like you need to configure the package manager's proxy sertings. doesnt sound like it has anything to do with salt itself

18:47 swa_work joined #salt
18:48 nomeed wedgie: Proxy settings are read the http_proxy variable which is set in /etc/environment. Package manager works on the cli. Since proxy traffic runs through port 3128 I can see that if I run $ salt "minion" pkg.refresh_db # Error messages are in the form of Failed to connect to mirrors.kernel.org port 80: Connection refused. Port 80 is obv blocked.
18:51 bshd Hiya
18:52 Oida joined #salt
18:59 bshd I'm kinda new to Salt, looking for a way to insert some dynamic data generated from a boto query into a state
18:59 bshd Not quite sure how to go about that though
18:59 Oida joined #salt
19:01 bshd I'd rather have the query running only on master to avoid pulling deps on all the minions
19:03 bshd Couldn't find any sensible documentation about that kind of task (but I might be just as well a bit confused by the terminology)
19:04 bshd Could somebody point me in the right direction?

19:26 viq nomeed: which package manager?
19:28 viq bshd: for it to be done on master they'd need to be pillars, and I don't see boto on the list https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/pillar/all/index.html
19:31 viq bshd: on the other hand, what are you trying to do?
19:33 whytewolf viq: well could always stick some boto based jinja in a standard pillar file. but *shiver*
19:34 viq whytewolf: but then you need to have the boto stuff on the minion, which they want to avoid
19:34 whytewolf viq: nope. pillars are rendered on the master
19:34 viq oh, in pillar file...
19:34 Oida joined #salt
19:34 whytewolf yeah
19:35 viq My reading with comprehenshion achievements mean I should probably leave the keyboard the hell alone :P
19:35 whytewolf lol :P
19:37 whytewolf it still would be be messy I would rather just create an iam account for each minion and let them have their own credentuals.

23:05 hemebond tkaluzny: Depends what the problem is.
23:06 tkaluzny first of all I'm new to salt, so can miss some basics, but nevertheless, problem is
23:06 tkaluzny I have setup an environments
23:06 tkaluzny so I have prod, qa, dev
23:06 tkaluzny in master
23:06 tkaluzny and on minions I have environment: qa
23:06 tkaluzny and when applying state
23:07 tkaluzny i got an error Unable to locate package 'x'
23:07 tkaluzny probably because winrepo is under base
23:07 tkaluzny not qa
23:07 tkaluzny under qa I can see win dir created with almost empty winrepo.p file
23:08 tkaluzny now trying to create a symlink
23:08 tkaluzny and see what happens
23:08 tkaluzny master is ubuntu, minions are windows
23:08 tkaluzny ok ignore
23:09 tkaluzny worked with symlink
23:13 swa_work joined #salt
23:44 tom[] when i copy a container with a minion on it to somewhere else, i suppose it will have the same minion key as the original. if its minion then connects to the same master that the original uses, will that cause trouble? if so, how to resolve it?
