02:00 laertus wow.. as a new salt user, i find the "Top File Compilation Examples" in the official salt documentation to be incredibly confusing
02:00 laertus https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/top.html#top-file-compilation-examples
02:01 laertus all the different implied precedences of the top files and environments looks really designed to confuse to begin with
02:01 laertus but those examples say what will happen and then don't explain why

06:59 `mist i had double prereqs specified. the file had prereq on the command, and the command prereq on the file
07:00 whytewolf That would cause problems.

09:28 pbandark Hi.. anyone around? have query regarding stack external pillar
09:29 pbandark with external pillar, as per example from https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/pillar/all/salt.pillar.stack.html, we can use "*" in stack.cfg. but, i am getting `2017-10-27 20:06:40,917 [salt.loaded.ext.pillar.stack][INFO    ][18735] Ignoring pillar stack template "minions/salt-master.novalocal/*": can't find from root dir "/srv/salt/external.pillar"`
09:30 pbandark can anyone confirm if we can use "*" with external pillar cfg file ? or how to address  all files from the external pillar directory?

12:00 nomeed pbandark: no you have to supply a configuration file
12:01 nomeed pbandark: in that configuration file you can add files however you like
12:02 nomeed pbandark: like loop over roles of the minion and add roles/{{ role}}.yaml
12:02 nomeed pbandark: or for every minion *.yaml
12:04 pbandark https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/XyEteqxyjQrL3IrDv9ERpA
12:04 pbandark nomeed:  ^^^^ its expected to work. right ?
12:05 pbandark i want to include all "yamls" from `minions/{{ minion_id }}/` directory
12:06 nomeed well you dont have any *.yml files in that directory
12:06 nomeed only one .yaml
12:06 nomeed try renaming the suffix
12:07 pbandark oops. let me update. i guess i had already tried
12:07 pbandark but let me re-try
12:09 pbandark nomeed: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/HPu5rlK9q31KqjovY3hI7Q
12:09 pbandark same result
12:10 pbandark if i use actual file name(12345.yml), I can see the data in pillar.items

12:30 nomeed your error description of full path works, but glob doesn't
12:30 nomeed means that you probably dont have read permissions for the salt user on the directory

17:49 khaije1 Hi all, I'm looking to compose states more systematically, but need to understand exactly how the single-use top-level IDs work. Any advice on where to get a deep understanding?
17:50 khaije1 For example, I'd like to be able to answer the question: is a highstate a single compilation unit, or are each of the SLS in the list a compilation unit?
17:55 whytewolf A highstate is a single data structure.
17:56 johnj_ joined #salt
17:56 whytewolf If you are asking about having the same id in different states the answer is no that won't work
17:57 khaije1 Hi @whytewolf, I'm extrapolating that the data structure is defined by what's included when the command is issued?
17:57 khaije1 That is what I'm asking, yup.
17:59 whytewolf I'm not on a computer right now or I would flag the page that describes the layers of data
17:59 jas02 joined #salt
17:59 khaije1 To confirm my understanding, having duplicate ID's in SLS that are run separately would work, right?
18:00 khaije1 Is it the compilation stages one? I don't mind looking, I'll see I know the one you're referencing
18:00 whytewolf As long as they are run separately yes
18:01 whytewolf Also see the state.show_lowstate module
18:02 khaije1 https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/compiler_ordering.html this one maybe?
18:02 noobiedubie joined #salt
18:03 whytewolf Yeah. High data and low data.
18:08 khaije1 I've read about it a bit but will revisit. Thanks @whytewolf, as always you are tremendous.

18:21 khaije1 https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/layers.html may have been the you had in mind too
18:24 khaije1 Ok, so it seems that the orchestrate can help manage the scope/namespacing of grouped SLS since it's compile in part on the master. Am I thinking about this correctly?

19:01 johnkeates rub it in some more
19:01 johnkeates it's like having a papercut and you applying some salt
19:02 johnkeates also, _get_subnetname_id in ec2 is b0rked, because the line "if not isinstance(tags, list):" will always evaluate true because tags is always a dict and never a list
