01:26 hemebond MTecknology: Why do you remove so much stuff from your server?
01:27 hemebond *servers?
01:27 MTecknology I don't like unused cruft
01:27 MTecknology some of that stuff gets brought back on some systems, but I like to start lean 'n clean
01:27 hemebond Does it result in reduced memory footprint or anything measurable?
01:28 hemebond Have you tried a netboot?
01:30 MTecknology I do regular system updates. It definitely helps there...
01:31 MTecknology Net booting is in my future plans, but I gotta get healthy before I can try to dig into that with any amount of brain power.
01:35 MTecknology hemebond: My end goal is to eventually auto-deploy *everything* using a magical naming scheme that lets salt and other stuff know exactly what's going on.   If I deploy prd-ns-##.core.dom.tld, then because it's production, ns.core.dom.tld will magically exist in dns, if an address was reserved.
01:36 * MTecknology is trying to drive the deployment and configuration of everything w/ netbox.
01:37 MTecknology It's mostly working, but I still need to rebuild some boxes w/ their new names. Then I'm gonna work on making salt actually do the deploy, since that bit is manual at the moment.
01:41 MTecknology I worded that poorly... ns.core is something that auto-exists in my load balancer. When I'm done, I'll do the same thing with a .dev sub-domain.

03:06 Sokel Hello. On the beacons inotify documentation, it states to use disable_during_state_run to avoid loops, but my reactor/beacons are always looping. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

09:27 saltnoob58 hi?
09:29 saltnoob58 joined #salt
09:29 saltnoob58 hi all you friendly wonderful people :)
09:31 saltnoob58 i need some help understanding how exactly to use module.run in an sls file if someone would be so kind as to help me
09:34 saltnoob58 i can get an execution module to work from commandline, but no matter how i try i cant get it to work from an sls file, the examples arent clear enough for me and i seem to be going in circles trying the same syntax over and over again
09:34 saltnoob58 works from commandline #salt myminion zabbix.host_get  _connection_user=user _connection_password=verysecret _connection_url=https://example.com/zabbix/api_jsonrpc.php host=ahost
09:35 saltnoob58 if you could show me how to write it in a way module.run understands that would be very nice of you and i would be grateful
09:51 hemebond saltnoob58: Are you able to post your state somewhere?
09:53 saltnoob58 i can remake a state and paste it to the pastebin in the header, but you can pretend i dont have a state yet and want to turn the commandline into a state
09:53 saltnoob58 i'll make a state for clarity anyway now, though it doesnt work
09:53 pseudonymous joined #salt
09:54 hemebond Have you tried any state yet?
09:55 saltnoob58 https://gist.github.com/anonymous/98bf35039266a711fcdf9b65ed1c9163
09:55 saltnoob58 i have tried like this, without quotes, with kwargs, though assume i didnt do any of it correctly because i likely havent
09:56 hemebond "Due to how the state system works, if a module function accepts an argument called, name, then m_name must be used to specify that argument, to avoid a collision with the name argument."
09:57 hemebond Try changing that in your state.
09:57 hemebond i.e., name to m_name
09:59 saltnoob58 isn't m_name for any parameter called "name" that the execution module itself uses? if you look at my commandline you can see it doesn't have anything like name, and in my state name: is the execution module im trying to sue.
09:59 saltnoob58 either way, changing it to m_name creates error      Comment: Module function Get_host to see if host is present is not available
09:59 hemebond Oh yeah, my bad.
10:00 hemebond And you said you've tried putting the connection args under kwargs?

10:03 saltnoob58 Comment: Module function zabbix.host_get executed but ret: False, just like in first paste
10:04 hemebond But it works when using the execution module directly?
10:05 saltnoob58 the commandline i wrote works fine
10:05 saltnoob58 and the module.run says it executes module, so im messing up somewhere forwarding the parameters i think
10:06 hemebond Have you check the minion logs?
10:06 hemebond Maybe putting it into debug logging to get more info?
10:11 saltnoob58 running state.apply with -l debug doesnt really display any sueful info, and minion logs just show ERROR ret: false
10:12 hemebond Hmm, normally you can see the arguments it's going to use.
10:14 sol7 joined #salt
10:18 hemebond What if you pass an empty args?
10:18 hemebond - args: []

10:22 hemebond Oh, that's not a thing.
10:22 hemebond pass. Difficult to debug when I can't run it myself.
