12:28 saltnoob58 hi
12:30 saltnoob58 i want to use states.file.line to insert a multiline block into a textfile. Every line needs to start with two spaces. How do I write spaces into content: without yaml thinking it's yaml's own indent?
12:41 ertyui it seems like there is no one here
12:41 ertyui come here later

14:08 saltnoob58 i think file.line is broken in the salt im using, even without any bells and whistles it doesn't match the line in content: and so inserts the line over and over again
14:08 saltnoob58 and i tried setting a jinja variable, then using it in item definitions in a for loop, but it didn't resolve

14:22 * nkuttler prefers file.append
14:22 nkuttler there's also stuff like https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/27295
14:22 nkuttler generally, i much prefer to simply write the entire file
14:23 saltnoob58 append is good for appending, unfortunetly i need to insert lines before a certain line. and unfortunately it's not entirely my file and i can't write it all, not in salt anyway
14:26 saltnoob58 i guess i should add a "y" to my username :D

15:33 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> any ideas what could be causing this? ` Too many functions declared in state 'archive' in SLS ..... `

16:17 XenophonF george.taranis: without the code we can only guess, but maybe it's because you are using the same state ID to call multiple archive.* states?
16:19 cyteen__ joined #salt
16:22 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> looks like there was a problem with the `{% set variable =  (salt['cmd.run']('ls  ........ ))%}` so  instead of setting it as variable i am using it as function on each state and seems to compiling now
16:24 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> but that's not the end of it as I am trying to figure out another one now :)  ```The minion function caused an exception: Traceback (most recent call last): ................   File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/salt/state.py", line 1265, in <lambda>     chunks.sort(key=lambda chunk: (chunk['order'], '{0[state]}{0[name]}{0[fun]}'.format(chunk))) UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\u2013' in position 14:
16:24 saltslackbridge ordinal not in range(128```
16:26 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> I tried to convert tab -> spaces just in case...and I don't use any non-standard characters or symbols
16:28 XenophonF why do you have parens around `salt['cmd.run']...`?
16:28 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> oh I think I know what is wrong....I should be using ascii text but i am using UFT-8
16:29 XenophonF oh ok

17:44 saltslackbridge <samyaple> if i set global failhard, is there still a way for me to catch a failure and correct it? something like on_failure?
17:46 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> there is not
17:46 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> i have an open issue about that
17:46 saltslackbridge <samyaple> shame. im restricted to global failhard.
17:46 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> well, actually, i think you can do onfail for each state individually
17:46 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> but there is no way to just catch all states and then run a catchall on failure https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/25769
17:47 saltslackbridge <samyaple> awesome. ill keep a watch on that
17:47 saltslackbridge <samyaple> let me see if i can do more iwth onfail
17:48 saltslackbridge <samyaple> does setting onfail for a state ignore global failhard?
17:52 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> I believe it will only run the states specified in the onfail, and then exit the whole state run
17:52 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> but i am not 100% sure on that
18:03 saltslackbridge <samyaple> cool man. thanks ill give it some more testing
18:19 edrocks joined #salt
18:48 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> i think I am going crazy....how come {% if salt['file.file_exists']('/root/iptables_irt.sh') == 'True' %} doesnt work and {% if salt['file.file_exists']('/root/iptables_irt.sh') != 'False' %} does work ? :)
18:50 saltslackbridge <george.taranis> what i mean is on ==True it doesn't pick up the state but on !=False it does....but it should be the same :S
18:54 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> why are you quoting True and False?
18:54 saltslackbridge <gtmanfred> False != ‘False’ so that makes sense.

20:54 XenophonF george.taranis: you can just do `{% if salt.file.file_exists('/root/iptables_irt.sh') %}`
20:55 XenophonF it returns a boolean: https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.file.html#salt.modules.file.file_exists
