08:46 viq Man, looking for "thorium reactor" ain't related
08:46 Church- viq: Heh
09:08 viq buh? I have /srv/thorium/top.sls readable by user salt-master is running as, yet it's complaining loudly that no top file found
09:09 viq Adding thorium_roots to master config doesn't help..
09:13 GrisKo joined #salt
09:18 Church- Huh, always though top was supposed to reside in /srv/salt/
09:19 whytewolf Church-: he is working with a system that has it's own top.
09:19 viq There's apparently 3 top.sls files now. /srv/salt/top.sls for states, /srv/pillar/top.sls for pillars and /srv/thorium/top.sls for thorium
09:20 whytewolf I've never actually played around with thorium... always seemed so experimental to me
09:20 viq And I have no idea why it's not cooperating. -l all wasn't helpful either.
09:20 Church- So writing a CV for upwork. Took the first one off google and just started iteratively tweaking it.
09:20 Church- whytewolf: Ahhh.
09:21 viq Well, I'm experimenting ;) I already have reactor that does automatic restart of a hanging VM when prometheus hits a webhook when an alert is generated, but description in thorium made it seem like same should be possible without external components, so I'm trying to make it happen.
09:23 Church- Ooh, automatic restarting I should look into, need to be very, very stringent however. Since our machines currently generate... I'd say $90,000-100,000 is made by our clients using our SaaS at the top of my head.
09:23 Church- And that's only going to scale once we go into beta and take on even more clients.
09:24 Church- That'll  be... interesting. I forsee many host machines dieing in rancher.
09:24 viq For some reason OpenBSD on KVM for me tends to hang, to the point that the machine running tor relay node can stop responding after half an hour of uptime
09:25 whytewolf only $90000-100000? when i worked at the bank an unplanned outage was counted in millions per second. needless to say unplanned outages were not treated lightly.

09:26 Church- whytewolf: Eh, small startup, only have maybe four customers.
09:27 viq Church-: what does your startup do?
09:27 Church- Bringing on the whale's next, so that'll be a min of probably... I'd say $75K+ per client, since we see a take of $30K per these clients per the contracts that I had a look at.
09:28 Church- viq: Manageming software for mining facilities.
09:28 * viq nods
09:28 whytewolf ahh then you have the ability to get it right now. instead of trying to work through a broken system years after procedure is established
09:29 viq Prometheus is nice for monitoring. Also automatically generating certs for icinga works quite well, and assigning tags to machines that get exported to mine, since that allows you to have machine monitored properly just from the fact that it's connected to salt ;)
09:31 viq upwork, I should look at that...
09:31 viq But for now I'm fed up, so AFK ;)
09:32 Church- whytewolf: Bingo, I've done everything with some nudging of our CEO.
09:32 Church- So I've been trying to follow my gut and best practices, check with lots of people, maintain very good documentation, etc.
09:33 Church- If and when I leave, I want it to be basically running on it's own and easy for somebody to step in my shoes.
09:33 whytewolf as it should be
09:35 Church- Eyep.
09:35 Church- I like well engineered stuff. I'm a builder, it's what I do.

11:35 MTecknology Church-: What's basically what I did for my first major enterprise gig. I was *the* guy in charge of ~250 unique snowflakes, most were 7+ yr old physical boxes running in laundry rooms in remote facilities. I was automatically the admin for oracle beehive and a fuck load of custom tools. Everything was managed by poorly-written scripts. By the time I'd left, I rebuilt nearly every
11:35 MTecknology system using salt, handled a total hardware refresh, doubled the number of servers, and saltified most all things. It took them 8 people to replace me, but at least my documentation + salt was enough to let the system admin replacement survive relatively painlessly. (except when I used "oh shit" moments to teach him to calm the frick down)
11:35 MTecknology without config management / automation, there's no chance I would have kept my lips above water.
11:40 MTecknology viq: I was all sorts of excited about reading over prometheus, but then I noticed the bit about being written in golang and it made me cringe and want to immediately run away. Looking at the source confirms my fears- that's some ugly stuff.
11:48 MTecknology It kinda looks like sensu might be one of the best open source options

14:06 viq I didn't even try reading the source, since even if I did it wouldn't have told me much. Whereas I saw person I believe has a bunch of experience in the field comment that prometheus libraries for exposing metrics are among the best.
14:06 viq And with prometheus you're not tied to running rabbitmq, making it much easier to start with
14:07 viq And yes, I did hear good things about sensu
14:08 viq At $work for some stuff I didn't have an option of rabbit and I have a bunch of stuff gathered using prometheus, and you can do some fancy stuff with it.
14:11 viq Like, say, display average of $metric calculated per DC, and the instances of the $metric that are further than 2*stddev from the average
14:13 viq https://imgur.com/a/f9VeL the top one shows that, the bottom one, showing EVERYTHING, seems to be preffered by people I'm gathering metrics for x_x
